First time plotter last year with amazing success. I will say rain was perfect last year. And ive never stressed so much over rain in my life. Have a whole new respect for farmers.
I can’t thank you enough for your insight and guidance. Your methods have worked outstanding here in southern tier of New York. My 3 year old switchgrass is awesome and my fall plantings are growing well with the timely rain here. Two 4 year olds harvested in the last three years. Meeting my goals! No-till techniques are awesome!
I planted 3 separate plots over the weekend. 2 plots of Big Boost Brassica, and 1 plot of clover mixture. I pray the rain comes to northern wv soon bc taking in 100gal sprayer tank of water just to water weekly makes me nervous with to much spooking. Thanks Jeff for talking on Northern WV area!
Just put in a kill plot this past weekend. Underseeded it with perennial clover for next year and topped it with rye, oats and radishes for this fall. Already got 3 nice rains on it so everything is looking like it should work out great! Also got a good dose of urea on all the brassicas just before the rains too. Following you has really made a dramatic improvement on my property overall. Thanks Jeff! Oh, and that B roll is really getting me excited for fall!
Hey Jeff planted some of your rye and Big Boost Brsssica blends. Brsssica coming in great. Super impressed. Rye not so much.. Planted rye July 1st at 200 pounds per acre rate. Have had steady rain all summer. It grew great until it got to about 10 inches tall not it has just seemed kind of stunted the last few weeks hasn’t grown at all. Did I plant too early?? What do you think could have happened?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 how do you combat turkeys eating your seed. All our big seed got wiped clean this year everything was cultipacked in so most the seed was covered. Thanks Jeff!!
I’ve run into lots of problems with turkeys and pigeons eating the seed before. I’ve since gone to disking in the seed after I broadcast is then rolling it with the packermaxx. On the new plot with freshly worked ground I dragged it in with a spike tooth drop behind my atv then rolled it. You will still loose some to the birds but seeding heavy and working it in the ground some will make sure enough makes it. You will get some more weeds coming in but there is always a trade off
You were about 2 months early for the rye.. rye is a cool season made for over wintering if you plant to early it gets to much summer heat and then it tries to mature before winter! Hopefully this helps!@@benjaminroot4090
Man that is a real bummer Fred, but at least still a lot of time! I wouldn't go too heavy on the rye and oats at first. Layer rye heavy mid Sept for you
Great video. Im in central Wisconsin and This is my first year planting a plot of and acre and i tried to grow buckwheat back in late may. The deer hammered it down to 3 inches so plenty of weeds popped, so july 29th, I messed up and disced up half the field and planted my mix of brassicas. It has only rained 3 times since then. I went in last weekend to put up more cameras and a couple ladder stands because I couldn't broadcast because of no rain for 5 days before and none these next 2 weeks. I got a good kill on half the plot, but it looks like my oats and rye on that half are gonna be a hail mary because of lack of rain. It's pretty discouraging busting my butt all summer and getting poor results all because of lack of rain and a couple of mistakes on my part. With that all said, hopefully, I'll get enough food out to help and bring in some deer. Thanks again for this video.
Planted my plots 2 wks ago just before a rain. We have had a severe drought in ohio but we have had some rain. I will see tomorrow how my plots are and if they are a failure i will try to plant rye if we get some rain
0 rain the entire month of August in NW TN. Beans look terrible. My final desperation attempt is winter wheat/rye. 2 years in a row with heavy drought.
2022 and 2023 were both horrible fails for me in northeast Georgia. We had very dry September and Octobers and couldn’t get any brassicas to grow past a sprout even with planting in rain. Just not enough moisture to sustain.
I had my cousin put in my plot this year, clover. what i learned. if you want something done right, Listen to Jeff and do it yourself. i have tons of weeds and little clover. so it looks like overseeding time
I’m in Louisiana and planting tomorrow. We have 3-4 days of 70%+ in rain coming. Issue is that we have hogs. Planning to put out clover and one of the 3 (cereal rye, wheat, or oats). Will I have a good early, mid and late season attraction or do I need to add something else? If so what can I add that hogs typically won’t come straight in on like corn or chufa?
Man that is so tough! One thing to consider is staying away from perennials so that they don't establish a feeding pattern of use all spring and summer on your plots. Even just letting rye or wheat stand as a cover crop...or oats on your summer plots. If they don't eat that grain too!
Hello Jeff. Are you talking about rye grass or grain for late seeded plots? I have some soybeans I want to seed a green blend into but we’re in a drought right now so I think it will have to be later in the year.
My small kill plot is sprouting. My plan is to have the deer make their way to it on their way back to bedding in the morning. I have nice michigan bucks in the area, and I'm hoping to harvest a nice 6 or 8 point this year.
Is winter wheat an alternative to Winter rye? Any pros or cons? Winter wheat seems to be more readily available and a little less expensive. SE Wisconsin. Thanks!
I have used it as an alternative.. it is not quite as aggressive in the late fall or early spring but it works well.. if you are getting it at your local seed co-op ask about triticale! Farmers use it a bit more than rye and it is a hybrid cross of wheat and rye!

I've used the Earthway spreader the last week & a half, and it worked like a charm. Thanks!

Time to fire up the Earthway! Timely rain is key. Fingers crossed. Great info as always Jeff. Thank you
Man timely rain is SO critical! Best of luck Mark...happy planting! 😊

Thanks Jeff, my no till method has failed due to drought so I tilled everything this week planted and dragged and now we wait.
Been so dry here in southern Ohio looks vet winter and hoping for rain soon to plant since 1st seeds died thanks for another great vid!
Dang Eric...feel for you! I hope the 2nd go around is a lot better .. usually is! Great you are prepared for it
Running out to one farm this afternoon to get some rye and urea down right before the rains come.
Hopefully you get it Alex! Our rye will be down in about a week I think
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 me too! Have one plot that is just a headache to get ahold of. You have a busy week upcoming I bet, congratulations!!
Im doing the same tonight, except oats.

That's awesome Peter...love to hear it! Man, me too 😊 I can't wait to feel the cold on my face in a treestand soon...

Just seeded 3 plots today in NC
My brassica plots failed here in Pennsylvania, planted with rain August 1 , then barely anything, saving plots with Oats, Peas, Tillage Radish and Rye
Man that is a real bummer Fred, but at least still a lot of time! I wouldn't go too heavy on the rye and oats at first. Layer rye heavy mid Sept for you
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 thank you for the input, going to do it in 2 stages

All a great learning process too!! Still plenty of time for sure...

Best of luck to you! We just received an incredible shot of rain yesterday...can't wait to watch it all explode!
Disaster in WV this year. Next to zero rain in the last 3 months.
Dang...really feel for you!

From east tennessee I feel your pain. It either won't rain or floods
I had my cousin put in my plot this year, clover. what i learned. if you want something done right, Listen to Jeff and do it yourself. i have tons of weeds and little clover. so it looks like overseeding time
Oh dang Mike! Get a good kill and overseed for sure ..

Definitely Winter rye...Fall rye...rye grain...not rye grass 👍

Sounds really exciting...coming soon!
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I'm very excited to see how the brassica affects the traffic through the season.

Morning Connor!

Congrats 😁

Ha
What would you say is the average rate for a dozer operator? I am not sure if they charge per acre or per hour?
Down here 75/hr
@@ClintonSmith-op5gb That seems reasonable to me.
@@compound_bros They usually have a drop charge also if they have much travel.
First?
Yep 😁
