Mark had a high IQ, bad for creavtivity in the sense of structure (pop/rock), the guy was a maverick and he was never given the credit he deserved. He could have done great things in later years but he chose family as being far more important and for that alone it just showed how he viewed the authenticity for which his art was being portrayed against the values of his children being reared. He will have my respect forever.... r.i.p. Mark.
my thoughts, exactly. a moral man . just look at him in this interview with his collaborating filmmaker. he has no time for pretense or pomp and he will correct you immediately so he is not misunderstood.
Only really discovered TalkTalk/Mark Hollis when his passing was announced. Listen to them all the time. I'm 72 this year, but luckily for me, my taste of music changes. I have friends who still only listen to music from late fifties/sixties. Sad really, missing out on some brilliant music. Still listen to new music. If my ears like it, and it moves me inside, I'll listen to anything.
"He's got a lot of great ideas. Yeah. His latest idea is the esophagus". These two have so much fun together. You can just feel their creative energy dancing around them. Fabulous interview.
The '80s are currently romanticized and yes, there was some great music but there was also Reagan and an appalling and savage epidemic going on that killed 100% of those who became infected. It was a more brutal decade than people want to admit. Talk Talk's music actually symbolizes the '80s better than most of the pop of that time, although bands like Romeo Void and Shriekback also reflected the darkness of that party-hearty decade.
They started off making fun of it all, the reporter didn't know when he was going to get something serious out of them, which is closer to the end of the interview.
@@m.a.gallardo2050 You're right and it was a common pattern in early interviews when he was still with the band. I remember interviews in France when they kept talking nonsense, not answering the questions, saying things like they dreamed of creating clothes made out of vegetables that people could wear all day and eat in the evening, that sort of crazy things! The interviewers' task wasn't easy!
i just love the honesty Mark has, he really dosnt care about awards etc its really only about the music, i so miss this in todays music world of publicity and celebrity
I don’t know. a music world of publicity and celebrity absolutely existed back in the 80s as well. And there’s still plenty of music that exists today (I would actually say the majority of music) that exists outside of this culture that dominates corporate media.
Maybe Mark Hollis wasn't just joking when he said that actually he himself is all the animals we see in the video of 'It's My Life'? As being so concerned with the environment and nature, I think he saw things in a holistic, spiritual way: everything connected. The animals and Nature is 'his life' that 'never ends'. He and Pope sure loved each other; Mark's surprised, happy smile after Pope kissed him on the head at the end of the Dum Dum video, so sweet. And what fun they must have had together, both so sensitive, creative and full of whit!
@@jojaxy9528 Hallo Jo, To my regret I think it has been removed: 'Dum Dum Girl [take 1]', for I can't find it anymore, and I discovered that in my YT 'library' with Talk Talk video's now already 5 video's have gone. Such a shame! For 'Take 1' was to my opinion even nicer than 'Take 2'! At the end Tim Pope walks up to Mark, puts his hands around his head and kisses him on the hair. You can see Mark is very (happily) surprised, as shows his lovely smile, whilst saying something to Lee. A picture of that moment is shown in some fan made 'tributes', maybe you recognize it. A good wintertime to you too!
@@jojaxy9528 Hallo Jo, recently 'The Rover' has put the track 1 back on, great! Very grateful. I bet you'll enjoy it. You could also have a look at Pope's 'I want to be a Tree', there's a version in which Mark Hollis is one of the parcipants, though a very modest one!
You're right, I think Mark knew so much about what life is really, he knew about our holistic nature and our interconnection with all that lives and tried to explain it in simple words. He spent this life explaining to people how so simple things are actually. Pope and him seemed so glad to work together, two soul mates I guess. Speak your truth and bright your light. Life is as simple as that really.
I love Mark Hollis. As an American I had never actually heard him speak while not singing, partly because I was born in '85 and partly because I only got into Talk Talk about a year ago. I was extremely surprised to hear that he has something of a Cockney accent! When listening to him sing I always imagined him as having a very posh accent. He's so cute, though...brilliant and cute.
