Singing is a BIG part of education in Welsh schools. Anyone who went to school in Wales will know the word 'Eisteddfod' means many afternoons in the school hall singing in front of an hilariously angry headmaster and a plinky-plonk piano.

A friend had recommended that I do so, saying that in the right setting hearing it sung would be an unforgettable experience. Having now done so, I understand a little more the great love the Welsh have for their native land and its history. Let me recommend to anyone who reads this that they listen to "Lift Every Voice and Sing" to understand something of the history of my people.

      1. This land of my fathers is dear to me
Land of poets and singers, and people of stature
      Her brave warriors, fine patriots
      Shed their blood for freedom
      Chorus:
Land! Land! I am true to my land!
As long as the sea serves as a wall
      For this pure, dear land
May the language endure for ever.
      2. Old land of the mountains, paradise of the poets,
      Every valley, every cliff a beauty guards;
Through love of my country, enchanting voices will be
Her streams and rivers to me.
      3. Though the enemy have trampled my country underfoot,
The old language of the Welsh knows no retreat,
The spirit is not hindered by the treacherous hand

Not many know that "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau" was the first ever national anthem to be played at ANY sporting event.
It happened in 1905 when the New Zealand All Blacks, the best of the Southern Hemisphere played Wales, the triple crown winners and best of the Northern Hemisphere at Cardiff. It was the first time the Haka was done in Wales.
In response Teddy Morgan started singing the Welsh national anthem in spontaneous defiance. The huge crowd picked it up.
The All Blacks said it was mesmerising.
As a result of this one incident national anthems are now routinely played at sporting events.

I'm a rugby fan from a non rugby country and THIS is exactly why I'm a supporter of Wales in rugby. It was a dream come true for me to see a 6 Nations game at the Principality and I still have goosebumps all over when I recall hearing the anthem live, sung by tens of thousands. This video brings back the memories.
Now I don't understand a single word of that beautiful anthem, but I think I can see the message in the faces of the players. Those guys love their country and are proud of it. And despite the centuries of oppression, their language is still alive.

To be fair though our anthem is about our ancestors defending our land from the Romans (they never suppressed the native population), Anglo-Saxons (English) (Invasion), Normans (Vikings) (Invasion), English(could not suppress the native population), Irish (raids), Scottish (raids) and Vikings (raids) the first section of the song mentions "her brave warriors, fine patriots shed their blood for freedom".
Granted, after a Welsh family got the throne of England (Henry Tudor) his son went against his fathers intentions of keeping England and Wales separate because he wanted central control.
Its also about the natural beauty of Wales + it being home to musicians and bards in addition to the survival of the Welsh language.

@Florentine 193 Being Welsh I have to say my own anthem will always come first. But if God Save the Queen was replaced with Jerusalem for England as well as for Britain as a whole then I'd gladly sing it. I never sing God Save The Queen. The monarchy is nothing but a tourist attraction now and I'm not a royalist. And a national anthem should be about the country...not about a monarchy or one person. It's time that anthem was replaced. During sports events I'll always sing my anthem, Flower of Scotland and I would sing Jerusalem too.

Many of your ancestors walked from Bardi to South Wales to work in the coal mines and later to set up successful Cafes and other businesses, they integrated wonderfully with the native Welsh, Y Cymry. The "Welsh Italians' are much loved and highly respected in Wales, since I believe our peoples have the same values and roots.

Now THAT'S a National Anthem. Huge respect from here in New Zealand. Most All Blacks fans have Wales as their "second team"

Same here. The All Blacks are the only team we don't mind losing to.

As a Scot, I wish we had a song anywhere near as good as this. Best anthem in the world, by a million miles. Flower of Scotland is a strong song, with a powerful message, but this anthem blows it out the water. Incredibly passionate, powerful and meaningful song.

Scotland does not have its own Celtic language and hasn't had for a millenia...Scotland's language is Scots, Germanic sister tongue to English, suffocated out of useable existence with the act of union when it was dismissed as 'bad English'. You misunderstand Scotland, its people and its language to suggest its anthem should be in a Celtic language.

+Robert Fairbairn Scotland does have it's own Celtic language, it's quite well known. However I wasn't actually suggesting Scotland should have a Celtic anthem, at no point did I mention the language.

So there I was at Birmingham city centre being the only guy with a welsh rugby shirt on for 100 miles. The streets were full of devastated englishmen drowning their sorrows with ale. Trying to remain humble in this euphoric moment I hear from across the street "Fucken Come on wales. Yee fucken slaughtered them english bastards aye!" from a scotsman. I'll remember that.

As an England fan back in 2013 I knew as soon as I heard this it wasn’t going to be our day. What an atmosphere, full of passion and patriotism, wonderful

As a Scot we have a no bad national anthem ourselves but there's something about the Welsh singing theirs just seems to add an extra something special. Pure class!
