  • This video shows how to turn your old unused Android Cell Phone or Tablet into a dedicated Car GPS that far surpasses stand alone GPS units.
The guide will instruct how to sync the Phone or Tablet with the car using the app Automateit and enabling auto power on when USB Cable is plugged in. This makes it so the Phone or Tablet powers on when the car is started and powers off when the car is turned off.
You can use any offline GPS app (video shows Sygic Navigation).
A huge advantage of using a Modified Android Phone/Tablet as a dedicated car GPS is the ability to install Android Apps.
Phone/Table synced to the car allows for in dash installs.
    Requirements:
    Rooted Android Phone/Tablet
    Moderate Computer Skills
    Apps Needed:
    Automateit
Sygic Offline Navigation (or your choice of Navigation App)
    Video Overview:
    1. Install Automateit
    2. Install Sygic Offline Navigation
    3. Set Automateit Rules
    4. Enable Auto Power on when USB Cable is Plugged in
    5. Test out GPS
    Install Android SDK Tools Video:

A tablet that lacks cell data for GPS-A location refinement can produce odd routing information in locations with adjacent parallel expressways. Unaugmented GIS maximum accuracy is approximately 30 feet and that degrades when radio noise is intense or line of sight to one or more satellites is blocked by terrain or buildings. In areas like Chicago and Oak Ridge Tennessee, I've gotten absurd directions from my map's routing software, like making a left turn on a divided highway where there was no left exit, or being directed into a dead end because the software thought I was on a parallel road.

The very important text, you need to enter in the command window to turn on the device whenever the phone is powered through USB, says the following in white added onscreen:
    fastboot oem-off-mode charge 0
however you typed the following in the command window:
    fastboot oem off-mode-charge 0
    notice the difference:
    fastboot oem-off-mode charge 0
    fastboot oem off-mode-charge 0
If this is so very important, a bit of consistency might be handy.

I am a Android and samsung guy. I have a S6, S5, S5 active, 2 rugby pros, and a samsung tablet. I even have a Motorola Xoom (which I loved so much)
I would love to have HUD , GPS and all my music stored one device.
I power these phones up and immediately am met with "no SIM" and I am sure a root would fix this. I just don't understand how do you download apps and stuff.

Google maps only lets you highlight a select area on the map up to a certain size. What I haven’t found it able to do was download maps of every single location you want to go and save them like a standard car mounted GPS system. There are better apps available that let you save all the maps you want and then use them whenever you want offline

Sorry. Basically will my Y cable that has USB and Aux cables run all the sound through the speakers of my R56 Mini Cooper S? Will it work with my steering controls which also has a call button and voice button?I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.4 Pro Tablet which when in a mount in the car I want it to act as my car info system.II have the Automate app. I have found it very confusing knowing how to approach all this. I suppose to use Google Navigation I will have to tether to my phone for the data? Otherwise I suppose I can use offline maps.Do I tether through wifi hotspot? Automate mentions that I need an OTG cable? Why? Why should I need one?As I said it is confusing.

    • @Cauchypotatoes
      @Cauchypotatoes  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+ResQ166 Hi im responding to your email through here since it might help other people as well. the auto power on can be done through fastboot. however for powering off you need to use a task management app like automateit (shown in the video) or tasker to my knowledge there is no other way to automatically shutdown the phone without using a task management app. i show on the video how to do the auto shut off. also sorry for the grammar i typed this up in a hurry lol.
      with automateit:
The important triggers for automateit are
      First
      Trigger: Battery below 40%
      Action: Shutdown Device
      Delayed Execution: 15mins
      Cancel Delayed Execution Trigger:
      Battery Above 43%
this makes it so if for whatever reason the car charger is not charging faster than the phone/tablet battery is draining. it prevents a totally dead battery. if you do a dash install the only way to fix a totally dead battery is to
remove the phone from the dash. its high unlikely to run a load that drains
more battery than it charges but it can happen. so this rule makes sure that the battery never completely drains and your stuck with a bootloop.
      Second
Trigger: External power is disconnected from device
      Action: Shutdown Device
      Delayed Execution: 15secs
Cancel Delayed Execution by Trigger: External power is connected
this basically means the moment you shut off the car and power feed is stopped on the usb port. the device shuts down. if you turn the car back on
the delayed execution trigger prevents the shutdown from occurring. this makes it so powering off the car powers off the phone/tablet.
      Third
Trigger: Device Screen is turned off
      Action: Shutdown device
      Delayed Execution: 1min
Cancel Delayed Execution by Trigger: Device screen turned on OR external power connected
this adds another trigger specifically for dash installs. automateit app does not start right away so if you shut off the car before the app starts it will miss the first shutdown trigger leaving your phone on to drain battery. to add an extra layer of security this rule is created for that situation.
hopefully this answers your question. the only disadvantage i see is having to spend 4 bucks on the premium version of automateit to use the composite rule. if i find a way to do the auto shutdown without an app ill do a video on it. but that's highly unlikely. there's also ways to make the shutdown automatic with other apps. i picked automateit because its much easier to use.

You can also download an app, called TomTom yes the same as the GPS TomTom, you download it, and you get 60 minutes offline use so basically, if you get lost and need directions you get 60 minutes of free directions. I think this is good because it is not that often that I need directions and 50 minutes is more than enough time for to get directions and that is just on your standard phone, sorry I forgot to mention you get 60 minutes every month, and put it on your SD card, no other things are required if and when you need directions you just tap your TomTom app and turn on your GPS tell it where you want to go and it will give you directions as good as a TomTom GPS would give you know other messing around.

If you need navigation on your old phone or tablet, just download the area map from Google Maps where you live over wifi, on google maps, then use google maps as navigation in your car. It works just fine for a phone or some old 7 inch tablet you have, and does not need any data for the GPS to work....step 1. open google maps. step 2 save area map to you phone (very small file saves in seconds). step 3 run maps as navigation. The local map needs to be saved every 30 days. My local maps includes all most of NC and a good chunk of Tennessee, so not a big issue there. You can save more than one map for continuous function on an across-the-country-drive. If you use your current phone or have data access, you get live traffic updates as well. It is all free except for the very little data you use. The maps are searchable, without data, like finding a gas station, and address or a certain business.

What is that cool phone holder? Is it just jammed above the screen and under the dash?

I just cut a book shelf holder, glued a cell phone case on it and shoved it in a little opening on the dash.

Cauchypotato Looks like a good, stable mount you made, there. Is the glue still holding? I'd be worried about the bond's integrity if it had to sit in the sun for a while. What kind of glue, btw?
