Today I show you how to repair alloy wheel rims that have become dull and corroded over the years, the process I use has only a small cost and involves no painting!
Products used: 180,240,400,600,800,1200,200 Grit sandpaper
White diamond Metal Polish

Flipping heck I have been watching a set of alloys on ebay with some issues for ages now, you my friend have just made me buy them. They had the exact same corrosion mark on them as the ones you were doing, and I know now that I have seen your No frills n crap, straight to the point, No Sh%& video's, I know I can do it myself. I did this one to wheels that were heavy curbed.. had to do a little more but sanding and polishing helped tremendously. Also.. u can use metal polish to give it a shine as well. Great Video by the way 👍🏽

The Recipe is: you need to wipe off every scratch with sand paper (I used for my deeper scratches 120(dry) > 320(dry) > 500(wet) > 800 (wet) > 1000 (wet) > 2000(wet) ), then polish it to 'mirror' effect with Autosol for Aluminium or Metal, degrease it and then spray it when it's completely dry. I suggest to use hands only. Do NOT use any machines for that because you can make it even worse. Alloy wheels are very soft.

It needs to be clear coated . Otherwise it will corrode or oxidize and the whole work gone down the drain. I have been through that myself with my diamond cut wheels.

@neindochoohh7955 so there is a coat,then yes, clear lacquer (which most of the time is useless) not needed.

Great video and very straight to the point terms of style, can’t believe we pay so much to have our wheels done and you make it seem so simple.. May give this a try on my diamond cut alloys, and just head down to my local DIY store for the sand paper and metal polish..

Were you successful refinishing your Monzas? I have the Detroit wheels (very similar) and the clear coat is peeling and there is moisture underneath.

This works well but keep in mind the aluminum will oxidise quickly which will require a polish occasionally
I was thinking that too.. maybe clear the whole wheel after sanding?

Love the video! Quick question, did you put clear coat on your rims after polishing? Is the oxidation not gonna come back if you don't put clear coat on it?
Eventually the polish washes off sometimes very quickly. I always use clear coat over top and instead of polish I use 1500 grit sand paper and water to polish it. Afterwards use 2k glamor clear or whatever clear coat you want to use. That will protect the finish and unlike wax it won't wash off. If you want to use his method I always use a 1/4 die grinder instead of 180 on bad curb damage then 220 then 600. If its not bad 220 grit to start then 600 grit wet sanded. I skip all the other sand paper. It would take me about 10-15 mins per wheel on a wheel like this.

All this hard work and if it were to be left like this it would stay this good for long. You need to clearcoat the rims to protect against the elements, also this will make your rims shine more. ✨️ 😎☝️

I bought a new car and unfortunately scratched my front left chrome alloy with 2 scratches (Not so big but obviously hurts a lot to look at them like that). I don't want to get them painted as it isn't that bad either but surely want to try to get it removed. have 2 questions

A lot of serious work there.
I had a 1993 Honda Civic Del Sol, with custom clear coated gold painted and aluminum trimmed wheel rims, that I kept up very well for nearly 20 years.
Then the car got stolen in 2012, but the last 5-6 years I had this auto, the clear coated aluminum wheel rims started to show this exact same type of corrosion under the clearcoat. Just around the aluminum perimeter of the rims.
I wish I knew about this method then, although I would have done all this work and my car probably would have STILL got stolen and would have been even more upset than I was if I had done all of that work to get those wheel rims looking brand new, again!
How long long did it take you to do that one rim?
That wheel rim looks like a pretty large rim and a whole bunch of hard work and elbow grade to get it to the finished look you achieved.
The custom rims on my Honda were rims for R15 tires

Good Effort Man ¬ Maybe a bit of clear coat to protect your hard work.
Could the old clear coat be remover with a solvent this would save a lot of sanding and only need polishing and a new clear coat applied.

@@ash8283 K, I have this exact same problem on my wheels. the paint behind the diamond cut surface is perfect. But I was going to use scotch pads to scuff up the paint behind the diamond edge after I sand off the laquer on the face edge and then lacquer the whole wheel. I thought the paint in the background would start to peel eventually as there is an edge created from sanding off the lacquer on the face edge.

Polished aluminum spots really bad so you have to repolish after getting wet if you don’t wipe down. But just polish not the entire process.

start with the lower ones and gradually increase the number in order to achieve the smooth finishing

Nice, but do you know how long it took me to find a tub of elbow grease?A week... Not many stores stock it these days. I was also after some Blinker fluid for my indicators because they have developed a miss.Blinker fluid was hard to get also but I managed to find some. After a drain. flush & top up my indicators are perfect again.
Is it worth spraying clear coat onto the alloy after this work .??
Hi, If you did fancy to clearcoat the wheel after the polishing would you need to key the painted parts beforehand with a grey scouring cloth for example??
Yes that is proper.. or more grab use the red scotch bright... Sanding is key for clearcoats or paints to stick..mask all the other areas off. 2k spray can clear would be fast and cheap
If I use a Dremel will it turn out the same? If so what grit would I need for it?
