There is no comparing the ages of the soviet leaders with the leaders in the U.S. now. Modern medicine has changed that. Even most of the citizens in the U.S. can't retire until age 70 because they will outlive their retirement savings.

No. they keep raising the age of retirement so they don't have to pay pensioners, even though they have contributed their lives to hard work and taxes. Governments always target the vulnerable.

N Korea’s recent history of illegal wars, occupations, regime change, and proxy wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, etc…is a legitimate cause for concern.
During the Korean War, the indescriminate US bombing of civilian targets ( ''back to the stone-age'') killed several million North Koreans. I wonder if that might help explain the lack of love for the US in North Korea ?

Niall Ferguson may be a famous historian, but depicting current US policies as "Soviet-style" is not just bonkers but also a very clear sign that he's become more of a Fox-style pundit-for-hire than an actual historian. Regarding Ferguson’s thesis, I agree today’s China is not the USSR…never was either. As for who is now the Soviets…no one. Yes there are many parallels that can be drawn. Arguably the USSR’s demise could be the fate of all nations as humans continue to harvest too much and reproduce too rapidly. Though I find the thesis thought provoking, it is a very long stretch and strikes me as hollow.

They are. Ukraine has gone from a large energy exporter to a large importer. Ukrainian authorities have said their output has decided from 55Mw to less than 20. There are also problems with routing because of line outages. Explosions and diesel generators are the soundtrack of Ukraine.

Usually, aggressors take out government buildings, communications, bridges etc. Here we see nothing of that. Russia is either incapable of waging war as it should be done, or there is some agreement with the West not to do it. Rather strange situation.
