Your country has a huge problem with these minorities !!! Bulgaria, many years ago, was trying to send them back to Turkey (the Bulgarian Gypsies are from Turkey and Romania and they are very dangerous and miserable) ... Unfortunately, after the fall of communism in my country, the Gypsies became from minority in majority and are real a big threat to our economy and the country, as well as to every country where they go... wish you luck britain's :)

Lack of education severely limits job opportunities.
And having more children than you can feed will keep you in poverty until the kids are old enough to leave the house.
Being a mother to early can limit Critical Thinking Skill Development. Because you never spend time thinking for yourself but for your child without a period of Self Independence. Making you dependent on your husband and parents for every life choice. Learning Critical Thinking taking risks then failing to reach some goals and getting in trouble for disobeying some common sense rules. Failure teaches as much as success but as long as you fail in a safe environment and not go off the deep end of dealing with the consequences. But mothers cannot Take Risks without worrying about how it affects their children.

The second, your non gypsy grandfather sounds like a pedophile who has no problem with buying a virtual slave . Do you have any idea what conditions would make someone resort to selling a child? It's possible, even probable that starvation drove this action. Especially post WW1 Europe was a chaotic mess, & as usual the Roma were last on the list for any help. Sell a child to save her from starvation & the others too. Unfortunate but understandable...
It is also important to remember that the Roma dowry system can often look like a sale, & in that era it wasn't just gypsies who married their girls off at a young age. The age of consent in Germany & Austria is currently14 .

The Roma people have a nomadic history in Europe. When I was a child, a bunch of us would go into in nearby forests and would find them sitting at a fire pit next to horse drawn wagons. The Romas used to go around local villages stealing whatever they could find: chickens, food items, money and jewelry. My bedridden father was robbed by one very flashy Roma woman who danced for him and then asked for some change which he gave to her thereby disclosing the location of his cash stash. She danced some more and he ended up losing his cash. It is true, that the locals would hide anything there was out of sight and lock their doors until they were gone. They used to be called travelers or gypsies.

I'm from Romania and I have a few things to say about Gypsies.
1: They are a separate ethnicity from Romanians. They lived in Romania and other parts of the Balkans for almoust 800 years after migrating from India and they haven't assimilated. They speak their own language and have their own culture. Back in Romania they are seen like that room-mate that always makes you nerves but with whom you got used to.
    2. Do not expect them to respect the law and your government's authorities. They have their own laws, their own kind of police and their own leaders, who are called "bulibasha" and even their own kings. There are some Gypsies who integrate and work hard. One of them became one of the richest people in Romania (Gruia Stoica), but most do not.

I am from romania too and I ask a bit of consistency in the hatred. If gypsies are different from romanians then seklers from Harghita/Covasna county are different from romanians too. But romanians generally act like gypsies are not romanian, yet insist that seklers are, and they should speak romanian fluently.
I don't know about your position on the matter but this general hypocrisy has to be pointed out.

A lot of the "racism" you document here is cultural trauma and social exhaustion from being put into a perceived position of power over a people that instead refuse to follow public order and then act the victim. Like always there are the gems that try to make the best for themselves and their families, but when someone threatens you and your family at knifepoint or tries to sell you a baby for less than $500, you should really think about the bigger idea, not just pointing fingers and yelling, "racist!"

That's usually what happens in Hungary is well. The media always tries to portray them as victims and the some of the Roma claim that nobody wants to hire them but that's just simply not true. I get it that some places might really not want to hire them due to their reputation but they could always find a job if they kept looking. The truth is that many of them simply don't want to work they rather steal, do illegal stuff or just live on welfare with half a dozen kids in poor conditions. Anybody who grew up among a lot of gypsies will tell you that only like 1 out of 100 is a decent person. And no sane person should label you as racist if you are somewhat afraid of them. Because in this case that's just being reasonable. We don't think they behave like this due to their genes but due the fact that most of them grow up with terrible parents, siblings and friends. Sometimes it's so bad that 9-10 year old kids are already willing to threaten you with a knife. And adult gypsies often commit such terrible crimes especially when under the influence of some drug for trivial things that it's completely inhuman. For example a few weeks ago a 40 something year old man stabbed a 25 year old guy to death because the guy didn't let him pet his dog on a tram. And a few years ago two drunktard had beaten a man to death because he didn't let them park their car at a place where it was not allowed to park to begin with. And the worst thing is that some "expert" come up with the conclusion that "It was possible that the illness the victim had for a while caused his death" even though he was completely fine before he was killed. When I've read these news it made my blood boil.

There is DEFINITELY a substantial amount of discrimination that Roma face, BUT there have also been countless attempts towards integration, every single one of them so far have failed, uniformly in Western, Northern, Southern and Eastern Europe.
Saying that we shouldn't expect Roma to change their culture comes from a place of ignorance.
1, Roma use a clan system. There are clans that are traditionally specialized in music, jewel crafting etc. Then there are clans specialized in thievery, begging and other criminal activities. Of course we should demand they should these cultural traits.
2, In many Roma groups child marriages, bridal sales, loan sharking etc are also cultural traits. Of course we should demand they'd accept to change these habits.
3, In countries like Spain massive efforts are being made to keep Roma children in school, often practically bribing the parents with cash grants just to get them to keep their children in school. These efforts usually fail as girls are pulled from school at around 13-14 and are married off, and are usually pregnant and with child by 15-16.
Boys also leave school by ages 14-15, for varied and usually cultural reasons.
It's complicated really. We certainly should certainly come up with better integration schemes and make the effort of applying them. But the fact remains that it has to be reciprocal, the Roma need to accept the fact that they need to make certain changes to their culture.

As Varga mentioned, they can send their kids to school, but they don't, they send them on the streets to beg strangers for money and food.
They live in abhorrent poverty, and yet they have more than 5 or 6 kids. They talk about how they don't have food for their kids while they smoke cigarettes and drink cheap alcohol.
What is a country supposed to DO when a huge majority of a community just refuses to act civilized and responsible?

Well a Roma lady isn’t much of an adversary if she chose to be. Physically I mean. I’m glad you had a good experience but when I visited Kosice the relationship between the Roma and the locals was thousand times worse than anything we see here in the west. The entire Roma population lives in two Soviet sky scrapers a little Bit outside the city which they took over illegally that is connected by a single bus line which is regularly pelted with breeze blocks and debris and any attempt at providing services and education are tacitly declined by a communal show of violence against any well meaning outsider who dares set foot in their ghetto. It’s so odd how behaviour we detest and find unacceptable in our society all of a sudden needs polemic defence and external efforts of preservation just because it’s an exotic culture we have no right to pretend to understand.... Selling off your children as wives, normalising a parasitic lifestyle and sanctioning the dehumanisation of all non-Roma is terrible for them and the people living around them. The sad thing is that the core of the Roma culture consists of a separation between them and us so fundamental they prefer to live destitute lives and reject a productive subsistence lifestyle that it’s almost impossible to engineer positive change as an outsider. I’m just not going to defends culture like that, call me racist all you like. Sorry.

gфøglэ рlûš I just don’t know how to discuss and engage with that topic without generalising. Having to always preface by “not all:....” shouldn’t be requisite because if anyone thinks that all people of any group have the same issues about them and none of the group are deep thinkers or vary in their opinions then that anyone isn’t even worth talking to. There’s always a variety of characteristics in any people. Of course there are great Roma and there are great clans of Roma people that think differently. In my comment I wasn’t even generalising. I was talking about the Roma in Kosice and the Roma in Germany in two different ways. It’s impossible to discuss with one another in service of a better future for the Roma people if we can’t talk about the issues within their communities without being called bigoted. Fundamentally I’m not attacking the people I’m attacking the ideas and ideals which cause harm if they are made blueprint for action. I feel sorry for the kids that grow up in these cultures where pursuing a life outside our civilised society is a source of pride and their traditions define and interconnect all members within their society like cement. It’s nice to say don’t generalise and I agree with the sentiment but what is going on with these tribes is not good. It’s not good and we should be allowed to talk about what makes it not good otherwise nothing will ever change. ....

You guys, here's a "fun" story. I used to do voluntary work here in Romania in order to help the least fortunate of the romani people - and I am talking about those living on dump sites with houses made of cardboard, having no clothes or shoes etc. The programme I was in offered the kids there clothes, toys, regular baths, new places to live and, most important, the chance to free education provided by professionals, meaning going to school every morning and receiving breakfast and lunch (all free)! For the adults there were free training programmes in order for them to be able to find jobs. One day we had this cute 7 year old kid who was very keen on participating in class and you could just see he enjoyed being there. And one day he stopped coming to school. So I went to his mother and confronted her by saying "Ok, here's the deal - he has a great chance to be educated and do something better in life than beg for money, he has 2 hot meals per day and the chance to be around kids the same age. Why are you preventing him from that?" Her response (before yelling at me and tell me to f*ck off) was "Why go to school? Why work? We are living on social aid and we are doing fine."
What's my point - since many people in the comments are ignorant enough to think we are all racists. THEY ARE GIVEN THE POSSIBILITY TO WORK/GO TO SCHOOL, MAKE MONEY THE RIGHT WAY, BUT THEY REFUSE TO TAKE IT, SINCE STAYING HOME ON SOCIAL AID AND DYING OF HUNGER AND FILTH IS MORE 'COMFORTABLE'. They are offered special places in school (from primary school to college), but those places are most of the time empty. And I AM NOT BLAMING THE KIDS, since all they know is what that lady said to my face.
Anyway, fast forward two weeks later, the programme shuts down, since no children/adults come to classes/training anymore (not even for the free meals).
Yes, social services were called in order to get the kids to a safe and healthy environment. But that is not enough... And I am so sorry there's nothing more I can do for those poor little souls who end up just like their parents.

I'll add little more to your fun story. The distrust that has been created from last few centuries not days not decades but centuries cannot be wiped out with one or two programs. You have to strive and work harder and harder everyday and night for months for years for few decades to actually make difference. You cannot just walk in and say hey do this and your problem will be fixed. You must be thinking it's impossible what I'm saying than there're agencies working hard from decades on a single program and the results are phenomenal. I was amazed by one such organization AKDN if you follow their work you'll realize that there's no easy fix. All I've to say is gaining trust should be your primary agenda in any kind of humanitarian work.

Every single one of them says that a big reason they were able to do well is because very few people in the States had pre-concieved ideas about them as Gypsies. Without the stigma in their way; they were able to get hired and work, open bank accounts and save money, purchase homes and vehicles, and send their kids to good schools. Turns out that when you don't discriminate against them and deny them everything needed to improve their situation, they improve their situation. Imagine that.

I'm living in a rural part of Switzerland. So far I've only had one direct contact to a gypsy group. A few years ago there was a huge European gathering (I think it was a wedding, not sure though) of gypsies supposed to take place right next to our village. They rented a large festival area nearby with toilets, showers, drinking water and a sheltered dining area. When the first people arrived we were showing them the place explaining to them the rules and what we expected them to do before they leave. They were VERY nice people. At least that's what I thought. On the morning of the fourth day we were supposed to meet with them again. Checking if everything is in order and clean as we had agreed upon before.
I was as if struck by lightening. There litteraly was shit everywhere exept for inside the toilets. On the paths, the tables, the benches, the floor, in the lavatory, the showers, on the parking lots EVERYWHERE. On top of that there was garbage on the floor, in the nearby fields, the small stream was congested with litter. Of course everybody had left by the time we arrived. Yes they had payed for the place on the first day but it costed more than three times that to clean it up again afterwards.
Such an experience makes it VERY hard not to become prejudiced against them. I would never judge a gypsy man or woman only on grounds of what I have experienced back then but such previously unimaginable things like this are very hard to forget.

Most people in this world are shallow, what makes them different? They obviously aren't taught about the value of cleanliness from childhood. It's not hard to comprehend. I hope you figure that out one day.

Prejudice often comes from stereotypes that have at least some roots in the truth. To immediately claim that entire communities are to blame for 'racism' is to also deny their negative experience with other communities. Lets be real, racism isn't usually about race, by that I mean skin colour. It is often about cultural differences, expectations of moral standards, hygiene and politeness/etiquette.

I was visiting Paris, and the Roma people would walk around with clipboards asking people to sign a piece of paper. They would say it's for a good cause or something like that.
Once you've signed it, they will pester you and pester you until you "donate" some money to their cause.
Truth is, they don't even have a cause, they just want money off you.
I saw a Chinese woman that day get hit in the face by two of them because she didn't give them money. I also saw two little Chinese girls get circled by about 5 Roma girls and they were forced to give them money.

Living in Italy it's quite easy to notice that Albanians, North Africans and Romanians, three minority groups that have only had a significant presence here for the last three generations, managed to integrate quite well. I personally know a lot of people from those descents and in most cases, especially when it comes to Albanians and Romanians, they can be indistinguishable from Italians of Italian descent as early as from their second generations, while it's not entirely unusual to hear first generation immigrants from those same communities speaking in the local dialect of the region they established themselves in. Romas, on the other hand, have been here for centuries, I also know quite a few of them personally since there are two Roma families who have been living in my hometown since the beginning of the last century and "their" houses (actually public housing) are in the street next to the one my parents live in. They go to public school, even though they usually are among the very worst students and always drop out in Middle school, they go to sunday school and local social gatherings and fairs, they are known by name by every member of the community, but they just won't integrate. They don't care, they don't want to, they don't have jobs and lament their alleged state of poverty, but at the same time flex their sports cars and expensive jewelry. Romas who want to integrate and pursue higher education are usually shunned by their community, the girls are withdrawn from public life as soon as they turn 14 or 16 and are married off to other Romas, the boys are usually quite violent and antisocial towards their peers. Unlike north Africans, Romanians and Albanians they seem to not be interested in engaging in social activities with other groups, they are never seen at gatherings with someone other than other Romas but at the same time they seem to know how to exploit the welfare state to its absolute peak performance. They are not infamous among Europeans just because we have collectively decided to hate on them, they simply never integrated and they mostly don't seem to be interested in integration at all. They simply seem to be different from every other minority group in that they don't do anything to better their own condition and that of their children. It sucks to say this because I know there are many of them that actually managed to integrate, and because I am a progressive and I absolutely hate xenophobic and racist outtakes on minority groups, but Romas are simply another problem altogether, I really don't know how else to put it.

There was a time when I hated them all (some 20 years ago), until it happened that I have seen a roma guy in very bad shape, doing a very hard construction job, pickaxe digging in the hottest sun. I thought that this guy deserve a hat off and I have to give him credit for choosing the harder but honest way of living. Later on, I started to seen them everywhere in all kind of honest works. In a factory from Czech Republic where I was working, the same was doing a roma family and some of their relatives, mixed with the rest of 95% non roma workers. All that time any of them didn't caused the slightest problem and were working hard together to save money for building a house for their son and future wife.
Because of their life conditions, many are behind with the school which cuts their jobs options.
In general, some still stick to stealing, robberies and other unlawful activities (including major organised crime, officials bribes etc.) but putting them in the same group it is a dishonest prejudiced thing. Same like being in a small shop where 3 customers steal, and you and another 5 honest customers having nothing to do with the first are being declared thieves by default because you are the same ethnic group.
The government is demolishing some of the illegal constructions, but truth be told, most of them were left to the inhabitants.
A fact that could had been included is that they receive the same support from the government exactly as the non roma citizens (including same child support, access to free education until post university level, etc.) and that also non roma constructions are demolished too if built illegal on land which does not belong to them or have lease expired or such.
The Romanians at least got used with them and as long as they stick to reasonable civilised behaviour they treat them just as any other citizen, in the bus, as a work colleague, official positions and so on.
About the very poor living conditions for some of them, again is not roma exclusive situation and are some poor villages where the children are working in the mud and walking bare feet. And there are lots of very rich roma people too.
Currently, more and more are trying to integrate in the society, to adapt how they can and live a honest life. If everyone would treat them equally as any other citizen (not favoured but not discriminated either) and concentrate of bringing everyone up from extreme poverty no matter if is roma or not, expose them to the values needed to live in society, encourage them to pursue education to stand equal chances for all the jobs not only constructions and such, they could get along nicely everywhere in the world.
Some people will complain anyway about the immigrants regardless if they are roma agriculture workers or German nuclear scientists. I would say: expose them to education too :)

+chunkycake101 That's a bunch of liberal/Commie bullshit. Higher taxes and a much higher cost of living are a direct result of Socialist policies. It's no coincidence that the most liberal cities have the highest taxes and the highest cost of living. Damn near all numbers are fudged by the Commies.

So going from what you've stated Roma are certain of their choice to live in a rubbish dump like the one I saw in the video. I think they're suffering discrimination more like it.

No you shouldn't. Not all countries have the same standard of living and quality of life in the EU. While the prices for basic needs such as foods, clothing are the same in western and eastern europe, the salaries are 3-4 Times higher.
As long as there is someone more qualified, smarter and overall better for a job, why would he not move to a country with better standards?

I am a roma myself and I know that in the old days there were many people that offered them help but instead they lied so they could destroy Roma camps. One example is the nazis that “offered help” but instead they took them to Auschwitz for example.

@@muam8983 The NAZlS were a small minority compared to the European population.
The NAZlS also completely destroyed most of Europe. They committed gen*cides on eastern Europeans, Balkans, Greeks etc. So your justification is not valid.
Their community just doesn't want to integrate. They are used to that way of life.

I am from Bulgaria, and I can tell you for a fact that the Roma are not hated because from where they are from, but for what they do. People are scared to go into their ghettos. They were not forced to live there, but chose to live in the appaling conditions. Even police dont even dare to enter becuase of fear. There was a project a couple years ago that involved making brand new apartment blocks for them, to get them out of the ghettos. Long story short, when they moved in they burned all of the floorboards in the apartments, and drove their horses inside. They dont use cars, and instead use horse drawn wagons. This is becuase in the night they go into the woods and do illiegle lumbering. 99% of them dont work becuase all they do is take the goverment aid given to them for having kids. This may not seem legit, but when they get payed a a grand and a half lev per child, and have 13 children, it adds up to a good amount.

And what? And nothing. They don't work, they don't study, they steal, they mug people, they extort money. The problem is the Roma and their culture
