    Thank you for the HPQ evaluation. Was already an investor, from the parent company perspective with the plasma torches, which they have sold to a North American tunnelling company??? You have the scientific knowledge regarding the chemistry of battery’s, and I have learnt a lot from your videos. One of my first clients as a young electrician was the research head of exide battery’s in the uk. One day I had a fault I couldn’t trace at his house, he told me to take it back to first principles. That was in the 80’s. It was something I took to heart, and made me a better spark. I’m now a professional technologist, and part owner of an engineering firm with over a 1000 staff in Canada. First principles was the key.

    *GRAPHITE!* Yes.... I invested in two Quebec based graphite mines in 2018. *Nouveau Monde Graphite ( NMGRF )* is my largest holding, and they are poised to kick ass in the battery space, as they will sell battery grade spherical graphite to the battery manufacturers.

      you mean interesting months ahead..They dont know when the testing will be complete or if indeed their materials will work. 2nd, they are still trying to figure out if the material can be manufactured a commercial scale and still be cheap.

      I don't think this is Tesla's intention. From what i have ever heard from EM was, that they want a transition of the world towards renewable energy and they know the can't achieve it all on their own. Sharing a common goal is more worth to them than "slaying" anybody.

      @@TL-xv9of At some point, I think many industry players will have to consider cooperating with Tesla on e.g. batteries, or rolling over and merging. As it is, they are currently circling the ICE drain, and most have no intention of getting to higher (EV) ground.

    Great research and sharing as always, Jordan. @ 18:23 your third speculated advantage... surface area. Tesla particles should have a smoother surface and as such they will capture less Lithium in the first cycle... HPQ nanoparticles are perfectly spherical due to the NSiR process. Do you think HPQ spherical particles delivered in whatever size Tesla needs would be the ultimate advantage? Could you not see NSiR reactors in Tesla battery plants?

    Hello, I really appreciate your well made videos and your calm way to explain these hard to understand scientific context. Even my five year old son is interested in the videos.
    With the mention of HPQ silicon I kept track on them and just yesterday they press released, that they reached 100 nm silicon particle size with their process. This could be relevant in changing the batterie composition.

I personally picked up on the absence of graphite in the battery day presentation and was concerned by that but you are very firmly giving it a solid presence in the mix. As a graphite investor I hope you are right! Either way it looks like Tesla is still a safe bet. Thanks

Fossil fuel free, plasma arc produced, one step process, perfectly spherical silicon, in whatever size is needed...

    Another wonderful video Jordan. I’m curious if Tesla was on the list of companies set to receive samples from HPQ. As far as I know samples were going out this month for battery and EV companies alike. Assuming that Tesla also makes their own solar panels and solar shingles, they may see the opportunity to lower their cost for solar grade silicon as well. Either way, it is exciting and fascinating to watch the entire battery and EV industry evolve! I am definitely looking forward to having solar shingles paired with amazing battery tech, powering my home one day soon! I hope !

      To date HPQ has not listed their potential clients but they have significant interest from the automotive industry and I would anticipate Tesla is on that list!!!

    Spectacular. One thing to consider is that because Tesla is moving to polymer encapsulated Si, there may be a path to replace graphite with ion conducting organic polymers. Currently this is probably too expensive, but costs are dropping fast. EDIT: it occurs to me this probably wouldn't work...
    Looking forward to the Clay episode! Heck I'm looking forward to all the episodes.

I expect the focus on cost and high volume will permit them to completely dominate battery tech going forward. You get the impression, if Tesla could use unrefined beach sand in the electrode it would. They're probably looking into it...

      I wish I could! I'm in the process of shifting my investments to the US and I have to buy it with the pink slips there rather than directly off the market. With that said, it's my second largest position after Tesla, so I'm not hurting, lol.

    Great vid as always. Quick question about the HPQ bar chart. I see you drew a line that I’m guessing represents $1.2/KWH as presented at battery day. But the Y Axis is $/KG not $/KWH. I also see that the left Y axis is Energy Input. What’s the right way to interpret this? Is that the charge that the silicon can hold/ton at that level of purity depending on which “route”?

      Hey man! That line represents $1.50 per KG for raw/unmicronised Silicon if it's the line I think you're referring to.
      By my calculations, Tesla Silicon is something like $30 per kilogram.
      I just ignored the energy input cost. In my view, it just helps explain cost or is a proxy for cost. It's the amount of energy required to process the material into it's final form. This is why Drew mentioned on Battery Day that Tesla is using low energy methodologies. Energy = Money.

    Good video. Another point to think about is the cost still. Si is still so expensive compared to Graphite. Increasing the ratio significantly (e.g. 30%) will negatively increase the cost per cell quite substantially.
    The other problem is that in automotive cells so many factors have to be satisfied simultaneously:
    Energy Density, Quick Charge, Swelling, High Temperature storage and cycle, Gas formation, cold temperature, DCIR, safety, manufacturability, etc. etc.
    And all these factors can get influenced. So finding the optimal trade off is what matters at every point in time.
    Sila and most of the startups will need more time to proof that they provide the option to satisfy the COMBINATION of these factors plus the cost. So far you will contibue to go with lower percentages (3-10%) and material from BTR etc

    I wonder if the strong elastic binder from the dbe process prevents delamination from the current collector due to silicon expansion, and ultimately makes the Tesla silicon method work? Without the dbe process, would any of this be possible?

      This seems natural to me. Humans have developed very asymmetrically since the Industrial Revolution. Look at most education systems today; there is a huge emphasis on thinking and problem solving and almost no time allocated to social/emotional learning. So of course there would be a disconnect. There are also many people who are stuck in this mindset of "technology is going to keep progressing and then some day we'll live in a utopia". Descartes said that 400 years ago and we're no closer to it now.
      There has to be a more fundamental shift in how each person sees their place in the world. Thankfully, there are encouraging forces for dealing with these issues: neuroscientific paradigms, psychedelic psychotherapy, contemplative neuroscience, etc. But who really knows how it will all play out.

      @@BrianJT I suppose I'll concede that point; it would be insane to dismiss how much technology has improved lives in the last couple centuries. My point is just that technology can't "fix" fundamental human problems like racism, inequality, conflict. There has to be an actual shift in consciousness and every single person will play an important part in that.

    I may have missed it, but if the charge and discharge of the battery is due to lithium reacting with the anode and cathode, then how does a polymer coating around the silicon not interfere with bonding?

      The polymer is lithium permeable. So lithium ions can pass through them easily. This is the secret sauce finding the polymer with correct properties.

    Iy may be that Tesla's dry electrode uses 'Fuel Cell' Nafion from Dupont. Here is a quote from one of my previous patent applications: Nafion® ionomer solution dries on a surface, it forms a membrane or film. However, it is known that this ‘cast-from-solution’ membrane or film is resoluble in water (Analytical Chemistry, 1996, pg. 3793-3796). However, if the dried film is heated to a specific temperature, the molecular micelle structure of the ionomer is inverted and the ionomer film is made insoluble. This molecular restructuring occurs at 284°F (140°C) according to Zook and Leddy (ibid) or at 176°F (80°C) according to Moore and Martin (Analytical Chemistry 1986, 5M, pg. 2569-70).

      They certainly have reason to do an internal battery prone environment if they don’t go EV. IMO, if we don’t hear about them building a battery factory, they are probably it going the EV path.

      Would Apple make a battery factory for an new car? unlikely. Which manufacturer would work with them on a battery factory where all the capacity already bought up by Tesla and other car companies. At best they will make 10k car if any in 2024-2025.

    If post pulverized is a problem in a finished cell, how about pre pulverize it? With what? Electric plasma without permanent damage it in the process.

      Pulverisation really just results in the micron particles being reduced to 150nm size, except in a really messy way. Self-contained fragmentisation avoids the problem all together.

What I mean is, we would all enjoy your unfiltered, unresearched thoughts on many subjects related to energy generation. We would love to hear your thoughts on Solar roof, Powerwalls, Megapack projects and new scientific research that is being done in related fields. I think we all love your in-depth videos, but we also would love to hear your take on subjects that don't require hours and hours of work on your part. We like to hear educated guesses as much as we like detailed breakdowns. Just putting that out there from someone who enjoys your videos, but doesn't like waiting for weeks between.

    With supply bottlenecks looming for key Li-Ion battery inputs, some companies will find themselves paying very high costs, making disruptive (interior, but 'cheaper'- at least to them) technologies more attractive. Perhaps this will even drive manufacturing of these technologies at scale well before they are even close to being better than even current tech? Perhaps this might even accelerate timeline of Li-Ion being equalled and surpassed by these disruptors? If that sounds a reasonable scenario, it would be fascinating to hear your thoughts on the likely candidates in future video/s?

    I wouldn't gloss past Nitinol as an option... it has extremely well documented material characteristics from the 70s due to R&D by energy companies at the time to use it to generate electricity and it's use by NASA in a variety of space missions. As part of that, manufacturing processes were characterized including things like inclusion rates, porosity, etc. It should be noted that a small amount of nitinol goes a long way. As for degradation, nitinol has (*certain) self-healing capabilities and upon heat cycling will revert back to it's original shape... since charging cycles will induce heat, this would provide a means of cell self-healing using the material properties at the exact time and scenario where anode degradation occurs. Tesla already deals with Nickel as a raw material and Titanium isn't a huge stretch; combined with the lean amount required (nitinol increases it's strength over heat cycles) it's within consideration. "Fatigue" is mentioned in wikipedia as a concern but this is likely more in extremely high frequency cycling scenarios like where it was being used for power generation. I'm not an expert by any means, but I did homework about nitinol a few years back before purchasing a number of meters of nitinol wire for home lab experiments.

Just like the CRISPER technology originated as a consequence of research in a entirely different scientific pursuit, for example, I believe that mining below ground will ultimately be supplanted by "mining" above ground in the form of capture/recycle/repurpose/re-engineer via materials science advances. BUT...the MOST fascinating aspect of this (for me) will be its spillover effect. IOWs, an entirely new and revolutionary economy will emerge in the materials sciences world that impacts ALL EXPLOITED physical resources on the planet. And I believe virtually no one on the planet yet realizes this...YET!
      And more than just total life-cycle manufacturing, it will literally be Star Trek like "replicator" technologies at both the consumer and commercial levels - even impacting 3D printing. And I believe we will look back one day and come to realize that it all began with the massive demand manifested by the global push toward electrification and battery storage and the disruptive need for metals like Lithium and Nickel, etc.

    Anyone watching Nano One Materials? The stock is booming on speculation that Tesla is evaluating their "one pot process". Also their latest news are great improvement in cobalt free Nickel Manganese cathode. Jordan make some research :)
