    I bought one of these five years ago. I paid about $9,500 for it and then about $12,000 in repairs. It was in really bad shape, but the body and interior were both in excellent condition. It's now running extremely well and it's a car I hope will be with me for a very long time. I've had so much fun with it. It's speed and handling are a perfect balance and it just responds so well to what I want it to do.

      I bought my '04 in '16. When the engine blew a couple of lifters at 218,000, decided to replace it with a remanufactured one, because one, used cars are expensive and didn't want a 380.00 per month payment for 4 to 5 years. The previous owner(s) didn't change the oil regularly as evidenced by large amount of sludge in the oil pan. Next year nearly every other component needed to be replaced. Now that that's all done, it runs like new. A remanufactured transmission is next. I hope it lasts until i can get the money saved for it. Love the Prix!

    If you wanna get into modding. The 3800 is the PERFECT engine to practice on. Easy access to most parts. Decently cheap. Super fun car.

  • @geminitiger957
    @geminitiger957 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    My suggestion, if you're looking to buy one of these, or the Impala/Monte Carlo/Lacrosse variants, seek one out that is completely stock w/ clean title. Comb through the CarFax and look for any transmission service.
    If the car has 100,000 miles on it but the transmission was serviced every 30,000 miles - than it might be a good buy. You'd really want one where the transmission was completely replaced. That would be ideal. Definitely spring for the engine/drivetrain warranty. Look into getting a TransGo Shift Kit and transmission cooler to help prolong the life of the tranny.
    Careful with custom tunes, because the stock tune comes with layers of torque management designed from factory to aid the transmission. With my Diablosport tune, I decided to leave the transmission completely stock and run a TransGo shift kit.
    The biggest downside to these cars are the transmissions.
    The other downside to these cars is that outside of a tune, exhaust, and CAI... performance mods are limited, expensive, and time consuming. Typically, results aren't worth the time/effort like they would be on other cars. With all the known mods, you could easily spend $5,000-$7,500 in parts and labor and net maybe... 100 more horsepower to the crank? That's after you spend $5,000 fortifying the transmission because it won't take much more power than stock levels. I haven't even mentioned the $5,000 Cartuning turbo kit yet either.
    Yeah, unless you're an experienced mechanic/fabricator or have friends who are, it isn't really worth modding.

    I just purchased an 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP LS4 V8, blue/green paint (a great color that changes in different types of light), all stock no modifications, the light tan enterior (leather with suede), stock 18inch Alcoa wheels with the red brake pads, only 31,000miles. I've put on almost 700miles on it already. got it for a steal at just over $5,000. Clean title and in excellent like new condition. Love this vehicle. I've went through the comments quite a way down, and I've still found nothing mentioned about the DOD issues with the LS4's in these. Now first and foremost, I'm in no way trying to tear these cars down because I do like them quite alot, it's just that it needs said that the trans issues aren't the only expensive issue these cars face because they have an active engine management system which shuts down 4 of the cylinders when cruising on the highway to save gas which was a good idea, but when these cars were made the system (known as DOD) was flawed and causes major lifter issues which ends up being an engine rebuild. And it's common. Now, it's preventable. If you find one of these cars with the LS4 (GXP, 06-08 Impala SS, 06-08 Monte Carlo SS) and there are no lifter issues yet, have a tune done on the computer and have the DOD system shut off if it hasn't been done already. You'll be thankful you did. My son has a 07 GXP that needs the engine rebuilt due to this.

    First car I drove was a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. First car I owned was a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. I love the body style.
    My dream car is the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP. Searching it up one day came across a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP for $2,000 with a "slipping" transmission and 150k on the odometer. Finally got the transmission rebuilt at 174k, replaced the whole rack bar system, got new tires and an alignment. Costed me around $4,000.
    It has some body damage, looks like it was side swiped on the passenger side. Missing the rocker panel (unfortunately not the same as the other trims, good luck finding it) I have a buddy who owns an autobody shop and he's going to try to find one, pull the dents out the side and paint it fire purple metal flake.

    Excellent commentary. Very well presented video. You prepared your thoughts and talking points. I leared more about the GXP even though I'm more of an economy leaning kind of person. I had an opportunity to buy a GXP but they tend to be 2 times the price. So I came across a poorly maintained 2004 Gtp which was manufactured on 07 2003 . Well optioned including side air bags ,magnasterring ,tap shift HUD etc. I got the dealer to do a option print out and I am assuming that it is a comp g due to the fact that it has a 3.29: 1 final drive ratio which apparently was a comp g only .But it doesn't matter to me since the supercharger is a nice touch although it will eventually wear out the engine quicker than a regular 3800. Still wish in a way that I could have found an 07 GTP to have the last model year of that setup. But im liking the GXP too except for the higher operating cost and scarcity of the 5 3 L -W body engine specific factory modifications .
    I think that the GTO and the G8 are about the closeest things that mimic the muscle car aera of the mid 60's to mid 70's. But you are still a young man who is enjoying the fruits of your labour as Was I 30 years ago. And there is a similarly between your generation and mine . When I truned 20 and started on the road to a career ,BOOM there goes the economy!!Straight down the toilet!
    And now with this covid hoaxarama ,it will be even worse and harder on the younger generation. So plan ahead and hope that you survive.

      I got my 2007 GXP back in 2010 for what was a steal at the time, $6300. Then the problems started. In the end I took it back to the dealer because of the transmission 4 times before it ran out of warranty. Thankfully, the last time I took it before the warranty went out was the last time I had transmission problems. I still have it today, but I always have that in the back of my mind that the tranny could go at any time.

    • @J-Rod7
      @J-Rod7 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Izzy G You really shouldnt run into any issues with these. The problem was people were beating on them so much they had issues. The best thing to do is get a tranny cooler and always change the trans fluid every 30-40k. FWD pulls so hard and that LS4 has torque for days. Im looking at them now because i want something cheaper than a Camaro, GTO and CTS-V. Several for $5k in my area with 100k or less.

    8 grand is entry level LOL. the GXP grand prix is not a bad move, but im buying a nice GTP for $3k, you can hop those up fairly easily..... i think that's more entry level, the GXP would be a step up. i also have a 1996 camaro Z28 i have owned for 4-5 years now (i dont drive that in the winter). it's a fun car that has a v8..... the LT1 is probably similar in power to your GXP..... i bought that car for $3k..... i had the trans rebuilt last year, the engine is pretty stock but i had the 4L60E upgraded.... bands, spregs, sun shell, shift kit, and a 2,300 stall. i replaced of the bushings on the worn out suspensions and tightened it up. i also bought a used loudmouth SLP exhaust. everything was done on a budget i have kids at home. the trans was the most expensive part at $2k. im glad i fixed the car, its still fun.
    btw if your going to drive that car year round, getting it oil treated is a MUST, you dont want a rust bucket..... its too nice of a car to just trash out.

    Love the GXP. But, can’t live with front wheel drive. Performance vehicles are made to take off with the rear tires spinning. Chevy SS, same. I’m shopping & hopefully I’ll find a runner.

    • @Jayhoyt32
      @Jayhoyt32 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're speaking of the actual Chevy "SS", not the Impala SS or Monte Carlo SS, it absolutely IS RWD. Technically it's a Holden Commodore under the Chevy badges, but still a 400+HP RWD sedan that few people know even exists. It took the place of the Pontiac G8 GT when GM ended the Pontiac brand and sold in very low numbers because of a lack of advertising by GM, along with styling that many see as bland due to the idea of the car blending in with the countless Malibu and Impala's running around to fool a potential victim into a race. I personally love the styling of the car, interior especially. Now, if I read your comment wrong or just misinterpreted what you were saying, I apologize man. It just looked as though you were saying the Chevy SS is FWD, and I had to correct that if so because it's one of my favorite cars on the road currently.

    • @marcanthony9585

      Thank you for getting back to me. No, you were correct. I got bad info. Always thought that the Chevy SS was front wheel drive. Also, burned my dreams wanting to purchase a not too expensive muscle car. When I saw the video on the G8. doesn’t really leave me too many choices trying to get all up-to-date Bluetooth electronics computerize muscle car, with rear wheel drive.

      Sounds to me like you know your cars pretty good. GTO, G8, ChevySS, and this year Ford is supposedly coming out with a Mach1. And I love manual transmissions. right now I own a 2000 triple black convertible Ford GT(cash cow), if you know what I mean. Looking to get rid of it and get me something that I wouldn’t have to be spending so much trying to fix. Preferably real wheel drive a manual transmission

    • @AndrewsCarReviews
      @AndrewsCarReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There have been some times where snow became a problem. I have all season tires and when the tread gets a little low it’s hard to get up hills and driveways with lots of snow on the ground. Like 6+ inches of snow is an issue for the Prix. Have never had snow tires so not sure if that makes a big difference.

      @@ob3ron356 How many miles did it have when yout got it? How often was the fluid changed? Did you do many burn outs off the line? It is the same trans used in the prior gen GTP, but now sure how well it holds up with the extra torque and power of GXP.

  • @samsquantch14
    @samsquantch14 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    id stay away from the gxp....most of em were seriously abused, the trans can NOT handle the power and the Displacement on demand was worthless and problematic....the 3800 was a much more solid engine and i prefer blower whine to v8 rumble...maybe im biased since iv had an 05 gtp for 6 years lol dont buy any grand prix expecting it to be a race car without dumping in some money into it...beat on em and the trans WILL go

    • @AndrewsCarReviews
      @AndrewsCarReviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your input, I was considering a GTP for a long time before I got my GXP. Yeah I wish they did a little more to beef up the trans for the v8 power because it really wasn’t made for this car. And yeah I tuned the DoD out because it was problematic.

Just wish it had the Nav/entertainment system. mine has the 6 CD disc changer option.
