  • German Frenandez breaks California State Meet Record with a 4:00.29 1600m. 2 1/2 hours later he went on to smash the national 3200 record.. probably the greatest double in HS distance running history.

I was there with a clock on him. This was his first race of the day. He cramped up pretty bad after the 1600 and they really worked on him to rub it all out. About two hours later we watched him break the 3200 national record. That video is here too. He signed with Oklahoma State down the road. For the Foot Locker XC race down at Balboa Park in San Diego I brought his cousin, Ivan Fernandez, to the race. He was in the Marine Corps going to school at the base in 29 Palms. I'm a retired Marine. I'm trying to picture what German would say when he saw his cousin with all of his hair cut off. It was a treat for our young Marine, who normally was restricted to base as a student, but I talked to his Staff Sergeant about it and he cut him loose for me. Super family, that's all I need to say!

He's broken four twice already as a college freshman. He actually set an indoor collegiate record for the mile in 3:56, then later went on to break his own record a couple weeks later in 3:55. And that's after coming back from an achille's heel injury. He also did not have any speed work. Gonna be crazy to see what he does for the outdoor season.

Great High School Runner German Fernandez! 4:00 flat cruzzed no problem! Too bad no competition you would have seen a 3:56 1600m. Next two hours later a National High School 3200m. record at 8:34. Too bad his coach couldn't enter German in a world class level 2 mile run on the track I am sure the time would be a sub: 8:29. Greatest High School Double of all-time to stay for a long while.

1600m is about 9m less than a mile so it wouldn't have been a 4 minute mile, but nevertheless would have been, and is, an incredible feat.

    • @johnwilson5743

Excellent point. Brilliant race as was his 3200m. BUT... those distances and times are meaningless as they are not recognised internationally. No other countries in the world race 1600 and 3200m except for USA. Plus, as you mentioned, 1600m is NOT a mile (1609m) 2 Miles= 3218m. So, while brilliant, they are meaningless.

German is now currently with the Oregon Track Club training under Coach Jerry Schumacher (his group also has guys like Andrew Bumbalough, Matt Tegenkamp, and Chris Solsinky among others, all very good professional runners). He ran 3:34.60 for the 1500 just a couple days ago (which is equivalent to that of a 3:52 mile). He had some rough spots in college but he's finally starting to get back into the groove of things as a professional runner.

  • @emeraldseven

    No he shouldn't.
He should get ready for college cross country instead, after winning NON and setting some high school records.
Probably one of the top 3 high school runners ever, but thats dumb considering the Olympics at this point. Don't even bother saying "it's for experience".
He would get toasted by the field (Alan Webb, Lagat, Lomong, Manzano, etc.)

i spoke with german personally and the guy is just a work horse. he said that he does about 500-1000 lunges everyday, at least 500 push ups...some of his workouts are crazy but for the most part he runs normal mileage fast, like 6-8mi at high 4s. at oklahoma he's hitting higher mileages but when he was still at riverbank he just did lots of extra stuff other people wouldn't do. i got to run with him and the guy just sleeps at anything slower than 5:30 pace -_-
