If you watch the original video, when he finishes the third lap, someone near the cameraman says, "He's trying to steal it on this lap because he probably doesn't have it on the next lap." And by the end, all he has to say is, "Wow! Wow!"
This guy went on to run at Stanford and on the 2000 Olympic track team in the 1500 meters, at which point his mile-equivalent time was 3:52.

Another statement was the way he didn't collapse to the floor at the end, Something the British Athlete Daley Thompson never did, He later said it was mind games, He wanted his competitors who gave 100% and were gasping on the ground at the end to look up and see him still full of energy (even if he wasn't).

I can never get enough of this video. To me, that was my brother in highschool, '82-'84. His sophomore through senior years. He set our cross-country record and our high jump record. For Cardington-Lincoln HS. Central Ohio. I miss him, because he left us too soon. But that video was my brother. Plus he also was, a beautiful human being!! In all regards. This can serve as a lesson for all of us. If you ever feel like you are coasting, just putting in time, etc. always be aware that you have it within you to dig deep and push yourself. If a person takes a task extremely seriously, and treats that task as the ONLY thing that in their life that matters, that person can achieve what they thought was impossible.
Most of us don’t want to do that though because it’s uncomfortable, it’s not fun, it can be painful. But if you direct all of your mental focus, all your strength, dig deep within your heart for the courage and belief to do it, redirect all your love, all your fear, all your hate, you can find power in yourself you never knew existed.

I ran for years, just for myself, not for sport. I'd do 5-6 miles everyday with one day off in the week. Sundays were my special day where I'd get up early and do anywhere from 9-13 miles. I lived in New England and I'd run no matter the weather. I miss those days so very much and I'm eternally grateful to have had that experience.

I recall in HS running the 800m Semifinals to qualify for Region. I ran the first lap almost full speed, 57 seconds. I then told myself I would hit the last lap hard to give space. The strategy worked until the final 200m. One of my teammates said it perfectly, “Gibby, it looked like a monkey jumped on your back”. I had literally hit the wall as hard as I ever had before and my legs crapped out. I somehow still finished Top 3 in my heat to make the Region Finals. But this guy pulled in the video pulled off what I couldn’t. Insane to watch!

I used to go running. Every day once in a while my heart and lungs didn't limit me. I would push myself harder and it felt like I hadn't done anything much at the end of my run. Granted, I was never anything worth a college racer pace, but still I think I understand this guy.

I had a jr high coach who insisted that I participate in the long distance events at track meets just because I outran everyone in my phys/ed class by nearly a quarter mile. But I hated it. I only ran that fast because since it was the last class of the day the coach said we could leave as soon as we finished running a mile. I had an incentive. So when he forced me to participate or be failed in the class when I told him that I didn't want to go to track meets, I decided to screw him over. If he was going to waste my time then I would waste his as well. I went to two meets.
When the first one began I took off per usual and led by a wide margin. At 100 yards before the finish I just turned away from the finish line and started jogging towards the bus. Coach went ballistic and started screaming at me to finish or get a failing grade. I kept jogging towards the bus. Got chewed out by him, two other coaches, and the princible. I got threatened with a failing grade if I did it again. I kept telling them that I never wanted to be in the meets in the first place. They didn't care. So all week I kept going home early by finishing the mile run first in my last class of the day. Next track meet when the race started I just turned and walked back to the bus. Coach opened his mouth and I flipped him off. I did that on advice from my parents. They had already informed me that it was my choice to participate or not, the whole track & field was actually an option, not a required class, and they would back me on it. Coach acted like he was going to do something stupid and I dared him to. He shut down after that.
Meets were on Fridays, so when Monday rolled around I got called into the princible's office with the coaches. Needless to say academic threats were once again made and even threats of physical disciplinary action to be taken. That's when I stood up, cussed them all out, walked out, and went home. The next day my parents went with me to the school. Threats of a lawsuit going the other way ensued.
I loved how on the final straightaway he turned up his speed even though he had already smoked everyone on the track!
