  • Michael Stember from Jesuit wins the 1600m (1995). Set the state meet record until it was broken by Ryan Hall in 2000 (4:02). Wait for it - don't close the window just after one lap!
    Splits are 2:08/1:56(!) and a 1:24 final 600m.

      @kinggremlin4574 5 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      Not, what he said. He said, "He's trying to steal it this lap, because he probably doesn't have the next lap." Implying Stember was trying build enough of a lead early to avoid having to out kick anyone at the end. Completely logical thinking, seeing the strategy Stember used in this race.

      @@Trancefreak12 dude cmon stember could beat anyone in this field at any distance.... stember was a beast at 800 and 1600... he wasn't trying to avoid a last-minute kick he was just way faster than anyone in the field. Dude dominated the race. He probably just dug unleashing a big kick. Cuz it looked hella cool. But it was pretty clear he could have outran anyone in a shorter distance as well. Dude was a college all-americans so no one in this field was touching him at any distance

    Steal, not steel. Anyway, the guy who said that was probably right. He did slow down on the last lap, but he demoralized them with that early kick. He probably knew he wouldn't outrun them at the end if he started his kick when everyone else did. When he got so far ahead so early, it also took away their incentive to run as hard on the last lap. If some of the others had taken off with him, it might've been a different outcome. It was a ballsy strategy and it worked.

    • @mikebronicki6978
      @mikebronicki6978 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luxury Brown the unexpected early kick surely had an effect on the pack and his primary target, the kid who won the 800 meter race earlier. "Demoralized" might be strong but it had to get into their heads a little bit... especially the kid with blazing 800 meter speed who was probably counting on having the best kick.

    I'm well aware that 4 seconds is a huge difference since I'm a distance runner as well, but just because German ran a better race you give him more credit? German's splits were constant. Stember was crazy enough to do 800 splits of 2:08 and 1:56. They shine in different areas. German can keep a constant pace and Stember could kick.

    • @rhysnichols8608

      But at the end of the day, what matters is who crosses the line first. So stemper of this race was the better athlete. Even so stemper had slower splits because he was deliberately going steady through the first 800m.

    I low key did the same thing I just did it in the first lap of an 800m race. I almost sprinted the first 200 meters and left other guys like 30 meters behind me, lap after lap they were catching up to me. The fatsest group caught me in the last 150 meters and I kept up the pace with them for a while but in the last 50 meters I started accelerating with another guy and I beat him by 0.1 seconds. That was when I was like 13 years old. I finished with a time of 2:21. After we finished running my coach came over to me and said “That was amazing, don’t ever do it again”.
    BTW ~ That was 3 years ago. My personal best for 800m now is 2:04

    I just watched his acceptance speech. He talks about he was intimidated by the guy who was in first. (Took second). He decided at 5 in the morning that he would kick at 600. He called his coach and his coach said I think you’re strong enough. He wanted to mess with the guy. He says it in different words. But watch his speech. It’s about halfway through his speech he talks about it.
