Well, not only you, but as they said, they are confused themselves about their ethnicity, yes we value ethnicity to maintain our cultural diversity that makes us a unique community, but for sure all of them are not confuse about one thing, they are all Malaysian inside out.
For Chinese n indian decents, mostly can be categorized to 3 parts : 1. Peranakan ( both immigrated hundreds of years ago ) 2. Immigrants during British end era of colonization -1900 ( 2-3 or more generation ) 3. Immigrants / foreigner which married with local & granted a citizenship * Chinese ethnicity : han, Hakka, Cantonese, hui etc * Indian ethnicity : Dravidian / Tamil ( southern India ) Bengali, Punjabi, Pakistani etc The bumiputra ( son of the soil ) consist : 1. Malay / duetro malay ( all Muslims originated from various part of ASEAN, especially Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore & southern Thailand living here before the independence day ) 2. Aborigines ( proto malay, negrito etc & mostly non Muslim ) 3. Natives ( all ethnicity which originated from sabah & Sarawak ( east Malaysia / Borneo )
5:10 historically, Malaysia or formerly known as Malaya only had Ethnic Malays and indigenous people. But under British ruling, they brought Chinese from China and Indians from India into Malaya. After Independence, we simply decided to become one people as Malaysians but Ethnic Malays being the majority, hold more authority. We do have a little bicker and political argument between races but they're not that prominent. In fact, in Malaysia, there's a law that forbids anyone from seriously/purposely starting a fight between races.
Quite the interesting fact, Malaysia belonged to different races way back then, Hindu Kingdoms, Buddhist Kingdoms, then the Muslims came. Basically Hindus and Chinese arrived in Malaysia about 2 or more centuries earlier than the Brits.
@@aldenteh9412 malay arrived in Malaya even before 2 centuries, back then Malay was Hindu/buddhist religion before islam came, even though they were hindu and buddhist religion but they were still Malay Race

Actually in record there are more than 140 dialects/ languages spoken in Malaysia. Of course, main races are Malay, Chinese and Indian. But we have aborigines of many ethnics as well as from our East Malaysia..this is not yet to mention cross cultural happened when marriage/ wedding involves different races 😊
for malaysian its normal to know at least 3 language or 4...malay is national language you need to know ...english for sure needed to study...mandarin you know its hard but worth it in here but here in malaysia we got 137 language but to know 4 of them already good enough
I'm so excited to having you two here in Malaysia~ You'll love it for sure.. I'm mix of Malay, Pakistani, Ceylonese, Chinese, Buginese and I'm Malaysian~ Mother tongue is Malay, 2nd language is English, know bit of Chinese, Hindi, learning France, Japanese, Arabic and Korean. It still a long journey to master all these languages but I love to learn other languages~
We the Malaysians celebrate distinctly cultural practices like kuda kepang by Malays, body piercing marches by Indians, firecrackers celebration by Chinese, Gawai by Sarawakian and Pesta Kaamatan by Sabahans. We celebrate public holidays also of different enthnics.
I'm Malay but have Yemeni and Indian bloodlines. Take Indian Roti Canai for breakfast. Eat Malay dishes at lunch. Consume Chinese Char Kway Teow( flat rice noodles) or Chinese Kari Laksa for dinner. The Chinese seems to love Malay Nasi lemak( rice cook in coconut milk). They even developed their version of Nasi lemak...

Even I am Malay-Thai-Chinese- Indian myself. Confused, right? Me too 😂 anyway if you ever come here lmk. There are tons of cuisines from each states It’s a food heaven here!
I think it's like when their ancestors married different ethnic or races, eg; Indian + Chinese = the kid would have part of IndianChinese culture mixing, then when the kid married with malay and have children then the children will have all 3. They get to celebrate major holidays with their multiraces relatives.
the original people from the Malay peninsula was just Malay like a hundred year ago, then the British welcomed all people around Asia, especially from India and China for them as an immigrant to work.....very sensitive thing to talk about, here rn, but that a fact

Actually Malaysia has always been multicultural since it's predecessor Malacca. Historically, the country has been the crossroads of trade between India, Arabs, African & Chinese. Hence, it was the most densely diverse nation in Ancient times. As European star colonizing this region, the number European here increase. However, during British times, they imported labourers from China & India in large number. It is also why our main race are Malay, Chinese & Indian. Before that it will be just Malay with hundred of races from all across the old world.
Different aboriginal ethnicity as well as descendants of immigrants.. you have to understand, malaysia literally in the route of sea traders since ancients time. So yeah, we got lots of people coming, mixing and marrying our locals.. so yeah, that's why
