    5:18 Need keto consulting?
In this video, we’re going to talk about left side abdominal pain under your ribs. I’ve talked a lot about right side abdominal pain, but what if you’re having a problem on your left side?
On the left side, you have your pancreas. Your pancreas produces the enzyme called lipase. Lipase helps break down fats.
If you have a gallstone stuck in your bile ducts, it can cause pressure to build up in your pancreas. This is because your bile ducts and pancreatic ducts join.
When the enzymes cannot leave the pancreas, they begin breaking down the pancreas tissue, which causes inflammation and pain.
Keep in mind that pancreatitis is often caused by alcohol or gallstones. However, 40% of the time, there’s an idiopathic cause-this means that there’s an unknown cause.
Further research uncovers that biliary sludge can contribute to pancreatitis. This is kind of a pre-gallstone, where you have bile sludge that blocks the bile ducts. Bile sludge is difficult to detect on a CAT, MRI, or ultrasound.
Bile sludge is concentrated cholesterol crystals. This does not come from having high cholesterol or consuming too much dietary cholesterol. It comes from having a lack of bile.
You need bile to break down cholesterol and keep it thinned. When you lack bile, your risk for gallstones and biliary sludge increases.
The best way to improve this situation is to increase your bile. There are several ways to increase your bile:
    1. Lower your carbs
    2. Fast
    3. Lower your grains
    4. Cut out vegetable oils
    5. Cut out nut butters
    6. Cut out alcohol
    7. Stay away from corn
    8. Take purified bile salts on an empty stomach (AM and PM)

I think I want to cry with relief right now. i went through a full battery of tests for a year; cardio, pulmonary, urinary, the whole deal, CAT scan, I even had an MRI - and they couldn't find what was causing this pain. Recently I changed my dietary habits (low carb/keto/intermittent fasting) and the issue has mostly abated in less than 2 months. Now I see this video and it all comes together. THIS is the explanation that they could not find. I thank you with my entire heart, Dr. Berg!

Did the pain come every time you ate? I had that. Once I started exercising and eating less it went away. Blood pressure also went down from mid to high 140's to low 120's/high 110's.

My left rib hurts when I lie down (facing up) and if I keep lying down the pain will increase and the pain will be like a sharp pain and it will slowly go to the part where my heart is located. When I get up or sit down, my left rib doesn't hurt too much but I can feel a slight pain sensation in my lower left rib. If anyone has a solution please help me. I can't lie down and sleep because my left rib hurts. 😭

THANK YOU! i have suffered from extreme chest pain for over 2 months - doctors said its muscle damage. I have had digestive issues for years now just to be told its all in my head. I have finally done food sensitivity test, dropped everything gluten, diary, nuts etc and massaged plus done streches for costochondrisis. My chest pain has reduced by 50% within 2-3days. Then i was able to pinpoint where the acute pain is coming from gallbladder, pancreas and spleen, and potentially liver. Went to doctor, he pressed on all of the organs that i was crying myself to sleep for whole day. After yhe useless appointment i then watched this video, started to implement the rest together with taking probiotics, a lot fruits, freshly squeezed juices, intermedient fasting (as it was very painful when eating). 2 weeks later i am sooo much better! In fact, i struggled to gain weight for years, my fiance was forckng me to eat but i was too full. With the bloating gone, i not only finish whats on my plate, but im still hungry. Great drawing by Dr Berg!!
The best way to improve this situation is to increase your bile. There are several ways to increase your bile:
    1. Lower your carbs
    2. Fast
    3. Lower your grains
    4. Cut out vegetable oils
    5. Cut out nut butters
    6. Cut out alcohol
    7. Stay away from corn
    8. Take purified bile salts on an empty stomach (AM and PM)

I’ve also added many vitamins including probiotics. I really have raised eating Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, vitamin b, magnesium, collagen, fish oil, digestive enzymes. My pain still there but less frequent and I put it down to now cause I’m going to toilet more. My next step is definitely having a soup diet for a month to see if that assists. I’ve also heard that beet root vitamin helps alot also. Unsure yet to try

I have went to the ER twice with this symptom of left sided pain, directly under my rib cage and they ran ultrasounds and scans but found nothing wrong with me. Blood test for lipase were normal. I was in so much pain the last time they gave me pain meds. My Uncle and Grandmother both died of pancreatic cancer. This information scares me because they both had similar symptoms to mine prior to their diagnosis. I have been keto for almost 3 years now. I do not take bile salts, so I will be looking into that to see if it helps with this condition. Thank you for posting such great content Dr. Berg. I truly appreciate you.

I don't think I ever had this before I started losing the weight?? Thanks again dr. Berg.

I experience the same thing. Not pain but a discomfort. Sometimes it's gone completely but doesn't last long. Got checked out by doctor (she pressed hard into the area and that did not cause pain) but it's just there about 90% of the time. I have no idea what it could be.

Update fellow fighters - Dr treated me for Ulcers, was on two antibiotics. Most of the pain subsided but still had occasional flareups- Did a stool test to check for IBS, results came, not Inflammatory Bowl Disease, but irritable Bowl syndrome. I went on a low FODMAP diet, cut out caffeine, alcohol, lactose and gluten and processed food. I have never felt better in my life. I am now on treatment for PCOS and I tell you, slowly shedding pounds, feeling energized, and healthy. I occasionally cheat and immediately feel discomfort. I hope this is helpful to anyone. Help is out there, hang in there, it is glorious on the other side of the pain.
