To be honest, everything they've done for TLD over the years, I would have been content if we never even got a sequel, but this came completely out of left field, and made me SO happy.
It's definitely gonna be a game changer. Especially if there's even just a simple gun customization feature, like improved barrels, improved stocks, different types of weapons.
@TheDachshundhistorian I'd even be ok with that or maybe a 12ga and the addition of cobra chickens as something you can hunt. By cobra chickens, I mean geese.
"We want to distance ourselves from the IP" - Changes the logo to do so - ??? - Proceeds to release a sequel to the IP Anyway, excited excited to see what Hinterland cooked for us Hopefully better, more realistic animal AI?
The amount of people saying "the story isn't even finished yet" is concerning. This is an independent company, and if they wish to remain that way, they must get ahead of the curb. They can focus on multiple things at once simultaneously. I don't see anyone complaining about Klei Entertainment announcing a completely new game when Don't Starve Together's story is not finished yet as well. Not to mention Hinterland proved to us that they can deliver high quality updates even while working on Blackfrost in complete and utter secrecy. They reworked the cougar for god's sake just because we didn't like it, they should not be free of criticism by any means, I just think that so many people are misguided in their words. Who cares if they work on multiple projects at once if the Long Dark still recieves content? Not me, that's for certain. Anyway, just had to get this out there lol.
Well that completely answers my questions into "what happened to nuclear power plants in the long dark universe" apparently theres a chance for meltdown during Auroras.
Meltdowns would happen even without the aurora powering the plant because nuclear energy is self sustaining which is how Chernobyl was able to happen, they were doing a test to recreate the events of a power outage at the plant, if anything I'd expect the power going out to be the exact cause of meltdowns at the nuclear plant
I'm not great at nuclear physics, but after a melt down, is it impossible to happen again? Because it would require more fisile material to be added to the reactor, and I'd assume a meltdown would render it inoperable.
@jampine8268 correct, once it melts down it may continue to meltdown but cannot occur again until the reactor is repaired or replaced and new fuel is added
@@ToastyBits yeah that's something that I'm a bit unsure about in the first game. It's definitely due to a game mechanic restrictions, but the island is permanently winter, but there's clear evidence that it wasn't always like that with farms and outdoor locations. Wasn't sure if the flare brought eternal winter or not lore wise, bit for gameplay purposes it did.
I'm super pumped for the nuclear power plant, a nuclear winter would make so much sense as the cause of the event of the games, the extreme cold, the lack of people yet the thriving wildlife, the abnormal electromagnetic auroras, and we never have a gieger counter in the first game so we'd never know that radiation levels were increased
I don't believe the nuclear power plant has anything to do with the winter. It's just winter again, but a year later. They are sticking to it so they can stick to the core winter survival of the first game.
8:00 it's a bear it sounds like, also the broken bridge scene shows a tanker truck spilling what looks like potentially radioactive waste into the river
Totally unexpected that they would release a trailer so soon. But I did expect a sequel after the hints Raph was dropping in some of those dev diaries.

Was not expecting this at all man, this is crazy, i am excited for it, but at the same time i feel sad about the shift away from Long Dark 1 as it is just perfect and has so much more that could be added to the massive fleshed out game it is now. But at least now i can play long dark with my buddy with this, i cant wait for that
I have never been hit out of left field so hard by Hinterland... I have nothing to say except I'm so excited to get my hands on this game( I know 2026 [Probably 2027]). I was quite worried that the next game would not be like the long dark at all but this was nothing I was expecting epically not a sequel. I will say I'm worried about it being more than coop and or there being hostile people and possibly players, I don't think that would be enjoyable to the current fanbase or be what the "Quiet Apocalypse" is about. I will hold my thoughts on that point until we know more. Being honest I think the engine that is running TLD 1(can't believe I need to specify now lol) is reaching its max for features they want to add so at some point its better to make a new game on a new engine to fit these features and also to make money for a bigger team and help with rising costs. Along with TLD getting more mod support it was just time. My final thoughts on this are extremally positive and can't wait to see what Hinterland has cooking because my lord does it look like they have been cooking.
I love the stylization of The Long Dark but I do think that Hinterland moving to tone down the stylization for Blackfrost is a good move. Assuming that the style they're going for is the one in the trailer, it still looks very good and is very reminiscent of the original. It seem like they're going for a busier, more detailed world and a more animated environment and it will work better with the degree of stylization compared to the original. Another thing about the trailer is the movement or parkour. It seems like they're going to include a lot more of it as part of the gameplay. I think that this is good as long as they don't have a traditional jump mechanic. It just doesn't fit with The Long Dark. Yes, the original movement had major flaws where a 20 cm box is a major obstacle, but a traditional FPS jump mechanic is just broken for a game that's as grounded as The Long Dark. And with multiplayer, I think it's awesome as long as they disincentivise PVP.
Notice how the t in the name looks like a fire fighters axe instead of a normal one this may show how were going to be in a more modern setting and also prob confirms mellee combat.
Actually it gave very strong vibe of the game I've played before - Impact Winter. It isn't very popular, but I really enjoyed it and played many times.
The pile of electronics in the woods puzzled me at first. My initial thoughts was that it was some sort of shrine. I'd imagine some people after a year of witnessing the aurora and it's effects, suffering from solitude and loneliness, would go a bit crazy and start doing weird things. The aurora is beautiful and historically our species has worshipped impressive majestic things like gods. But I think the answer is more simple than that. Electronics and the aurora are going to pose a much bigger threat in this game than the last. The mention of aurora superstorms solidifies that further. We see several shots of power lines and towers sparking and catching fire. Imagine what individual electronics can do if they are near a person? I'd imagine at the very start people thought to throw out all electronics that posed a threat so they dumped them into the woods.
Did you see the binoculars at 8:03 when the guy with the rifle stands up, I had a binocular mod in the TLD and it was game changing, so excited!! Edit: At 13:45 you can also see a clock radio in the center of the pile with a time on it reading 20:26
I have very very mixed feelings about the announcement of this. Is this not more evidence that TLD Story mode could’ve been finished by now? Have the devs explained why story mode has taken this long? Developing the Tales from the Far Territory was questionable, and now an announcement of a fully fledged sequel while the story mode of the first game is still unfinished?! What upsets me and pisses me off even more is how beautiful this looks, 2 years away from “early access.” Have the devs at least commented on this?
Game developer here. Video games take a lot of time to make. A game like The Long Dark would take a AAA studio a good 3-4 years to make. These things take time and an indie developer can't keep the lights on with the dwindling revenue of an aging game. This is a copy and paste response because there are many people not understanding how game development works.
@ you are absolutely right, I’m not a dev, but from what I can see here, it’s still giving me mixed feelings. I’m positive I’ve heard from the devs that they are a small team anyway. So they’re spreading thin with every project they undertake. I don’t like feeling like this, but when you announce a sequel before the originals story mode is even complete, it’s still bizarre to me.
I think that is why Hinterland has seen so many delays the last 2 years. It's because they were spread so thin. Now, all the tales expansion devs have moved over to Wintermute. Once that is done, most of those devs will move on to Blackfrost.
Like I said about a minute into the video, games take a long time to make. Raphael made it very clear at the end of the recent dev diary that they need to plan years in advance in order to keep the studio alive. The Long Dark will be content complete come early next year and will get some additional support for at least a year. After that, they are releasing a brand new game. They need to keep producing games even if the previous one isn't done because of this. It takes time for these things to happen.
The cairns are not part of the game development. They each represent a corresponding backer from the initial kickstarter campaign for the game - they had the option of adding a message for their personal cairn, but most of them didn't 😮
I’m with you on this one regarding the story. I’ve made a comment here on this video, so I won’t go deep into how I feel. It’s just bizarre to me, very mixed feelings.
This is off the topic of the video but I think ruettiger is Sutherland the age fits the lack of memory fits I highly doubt that he came back unscathed thus bad leg why the boat he was trying to escape or something and in one of Reuttigers journals he mentions having a brother definitely a stretch but something to think about

2:32 i think this video is mostly for sponsors and investors to bring more support to tld2 as long as the candle for tld1 is still burning... perfct timing for me
I don't know what you mean by sponsors and investors, but Hinterland is not in the business of taking money from other businesses. You are right though, sales for the first game are going to pick up for sure.
I originally took that as a sign of PvP, but there isn't any other thing that indicates it. I see it as an indication there may be enemy NPCs that the team of coop players can run into.
One thing I instantly noticed was the change in art direction. Much softer colors, less stylized lighting, and less jagged angles compared to the original TLD. Somehow feels less distinct than TLD, more generic artsy indie game concept. But at the same time some of the shots they've provided are so nuts even if they kept the new style or leaned even harder into it than shown here I think it'll be fantastic. I'm just glad to see Hinterland proceeding forward in everything, although a sequel to TLD was literally the last thing I expected (and a hugely welcome surprise).
It’s looks beautiful but I hope they don’t lose what gives The Long Dark its identity. I’d hate to see it become just another survival shooter like Rust or Day Z with the addition of lots more people. Isolation is part of what I love about the game.
@ well I wouldn’t say it’s a direct comparison. Since it’s just a trailer we haven’t seen exactly what the gameplay will be. I hope, like you suggest, that it would be a co-op game but not multiplayer in the same way as Rust is. Needless to say I have high hopes for this game and the last part of Wintermute coming soon
Well, the Game Awards is the best place to market your game, especially when the game is years away. That's millions of people watching your trailer live.
Ew.. I'm so tired of forced co op.. The thing I like the most in the first game is the intense isolation and solitude. This is massively disappointing.. TwT
