    For Fallout 1: If you put things like healing items in the hotbar where you keep weapons, it will allow you to use it with a click instead of having to specifically access the use button. Instead of acting like a weapon, you get a “use on” prompt instead where you can target yourself with stims, for example.

    • @TristenSarelvun
      @TristenSarelvun ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes; the issue then, however, is that it's taking up a weapon slot. What I tend to do (in Fallout 2; I assume it's doable in 1 as well, but I'm not sure) is hold-click over myself or an NPC, scroll to the item menu, then click stimpak which will heal them while only using 2 AP, rather than the extra AP opening inventory anytime you want to heal or move a new stimpak to the hotbar.

      Honestly, I wish games would bring that style of "Use X on Y if you want!". It was one of the things I really liked about Oblivion, particularly it's spellcrafting system. Want a ranged healing spell? Sure! Want a self applied damage spell? That's possible too! I feel like it opens up gameplay to more possibilities, especially if TES:VI has it, and the continuous casting from Skyrim. Maybe a Vampiric Build where you heal your enemy, but replenish your health using his.

    When playing Fallout 76 (back when it was still fairly new) I got to the end of the game, fought through the endless robots, launched the nuke and got disconnected from the server. When I reconnected, I was on a different server where the nuke had not been launched. My character nuked the world so hard that they jumped into a parallel dimension. I believe this is the canon ending of 76.

    I like the fallout new vegas wasteland. The fact that some places are just empty desert makes me appreciate the places of interest like settlements or even small ruins and abandoned shacks even more. I also appreciate the loneliness. Nothing like walking along the desolate highway while listening to some nice tunes on the radio. Maybe it's just me but i love that. It always reminds me of hiking trips i take with my friends or alone. It's just so peaceful.

      I think the point was that when you don't want to commit to the main mission yet, you have to actively wander off into the void to find interesting side content. I certainly share this opinion. Sometimes I didn't feel like continuing my path to NV, so I just thought to myself "I wonder if anything is beyond this ridge 500 meters ahead?". And I went, and sometimes I didn't find anything. Nothing is more discouraging than an invisible wall that you stumble upon instead of a curious locale you've been expecting to see. But, at the end of the day, that's New Vegas we're talking about. With enough patience, you'll be swimming in side quests in no time

    The part about hacking owned terminals makes me think that the karma part was originally planned for NV because in that game it's pretty much the only way to reliably lose Karma. Keeping negative karma in fo3 is easier than loosing it because you will constantly be attacked by regulators which each give you negative karma when killed. They also won't stop spawning when getting back to good karma, so once you go bad there's no coming back.
    It's still great to blow up megaton and get back to max karma for the main quest just to hear your father say "I've heard so much good about you. Is it true? Did you blow up megaton?"

    Can’t wait for N_orte video “the garbage of fallout.”.

  • @PREDATOR310
    @PREDATOR310 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Nice video, Rad!
    I myself have somewhat different issues with at least 3d fallout titles (I'm yet to play 1 and 2). For fallout 3 my issues with a game lies more on a mechanical side: a lot of basically usless perks, big bullet spread of ranged weapons, inability to craft repair kits, etc. But I also feel like there are not enough interesting quests that leads you to interesting locations and for me exploration without them, with old engine limitations, feels clanky or pointless.
    NV on the other hand almost always have a quest or multiple quests that lead you into exploring interesting location, but I have other problems with that game. There are a lot of quests that following a formula of "go to point A, talk, go to point B, talk, come back to point A, talk again, quest completed". You, of corse, can chose to go on a killing spree, but it'll just fail the quest, or cut a content of a quest to a bare minimum. Also, I really dislike a fact that lonesome road gives a Courier supposed past, the beauty of a start without context is that you can choose for yourself who was your character before bullet to the head, and Lonesome road ruins it for me.
    For Fallout 4 same as you I dislike voiced protag, and dialog system. Voiced protag again ruins roleplay part of the game for me and dialogue wheel is too ambiguous. I just don't feel like my character belongs to me, I'm forced in a role of Nate or Nora. Far harbor somewhat helps with that, hinting that you can be just a synth with implanted memories, it helps loosen a forced role a little bit, so some decisions that you can make looks less "out of caracter".
    And lastly 76. I truly love this game, and also hope that Bethesda will give us a way to play it, after server eventually shut down. But my main issues with a game are slow pace of updates and late game content. For updates, they are really far apart and usually brings small amount of new content that can be enjoyed for a week or two, before becoming stale or/and mundane. For late game content, it's a daily grind, that I would be fine with, every mmo has this type of content, I can enjoy it. And I would, if not for daily limits, specifically for legendary scrip that you need for legendary crafting. You can spend weeks grinding legendary scrip for modules every single day, than spending them hoping to roll exect effects on your favorite weapon or armor, and game just gives you the whole lot of garbage. Also your stash is full of legendaries all the time, and you just don't want to play content the gives you even more legendaries to exchange. If they make scrip limitless or change the legendary crafting system, it would be so much more enjoyable.

      *Puts beer down, hits bong, and lights cig* Buckle up buttercup because while I agree with almost everything said for most 3D fallouts. *takes big drag off smoke* 76.... is the most horrid fallout game ever, it's Bethesdas perfect skinner box, I love this series and have since the first fallout (I know I'm a fossil) the constant online connection, the perceived need to have a premium account, the bullshit skins for real life money, the bullshit launch... It really just soured the franchise for me. I'll always love Fallout, hell I'll even buy the next game as long as it's not a games as a service title. But they really fucked this all up in the delivery. Not only that but if you look back on old articles Obsidian got screwed by legal BS out of making the MMO Fallout we all wanted by Bethesda. If the NV team had made this title well I think we would all be much happier.

    My personal headcanon for the difference in Power Armor for Fallout Tactical is that after the migration to Chicago, the Midwest BoS found a cache of power armor developed by the Rock Island Arsenal (which is also in Illinois). The design was a competing design in the PA trials which resulted in the eventual adoption of West Tek's T-series power armor, and although the RIA design was similar in performance, it was denied due to crony corporatist lobbying, mothballed at the arsenal, and defended by the Arsenal's automated defenses after the war, and utilized by the BoS, who were the only ones equipped to breach it's defenses. This accounts for how rare it is, as well as the existence of an incredibly rare Advanced variant, which was also developed at the arsenal but was deemed too expensive or otherwise untenable to produce. Cheers.

    My favorite thing about the fallout series is that you can mod every game (except 76 obviously) to tweak and fix the things you don’t like. I just recently completed Fallout 1 and am currently playing through Fallout 2, and a lot of the weird and janky things that come with the game being old have been fixed by the modding community. There are plenty of mods for all of the games that are meant to enhance the vanilla gameplay without drastically changing the game, and I love that we as players have the freedom to tweak the game in ways we see fit.

    My biggest gripe with New Vegas
    The introduction to the setting. The other games you have stakes to move the story forward... save your vault, find your dad, find your son. There has to be a motivation higher than the basic desire to survive.
    I wake up after being left for dead in my previous career as a courier, these nice people patch me up, give me work, trade with me... why would I leave that behind on some solo quest for revenge? They think I'm dead. I'm free of that life and have everything I need here in Good Springs.

    @NODnuke45 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I knew this was an April Fools joke going into it, but dammit I expected you to run with it!
    Anyway, I have to say I think the karma system was far more broken in New Vegas than in 3. For example in the Tenpenny Tower mission in Fallout 3, getting negative karma no matter which side you choose not only makes sense to me, but is good design in my opinion. The reason being that neither Roy Phillips or Tenpenny is "right" in that situation, both sides are wrong and evil to some degree, and the lesser of two evils is still evil. And it makes sense because it is realistic that one will inevitably find themselves caught between a series of bad options from time to time, with no good option to choose from. In New Vegas it makes far less sense to me, even though I agree that in 3 the balancing is somewhat off and can result in some odd things like getting very good karma even if you've massacred entire settlements. But in New Vegas it always stuck out way more in my mind, and bothered me a lot more that I would get good karma for killing bad people like, say, Caesar's Legion, but bad karma from stealing from them. How exactly is it a bad deed to steal from people who acquired most of their property through slavery and indiscriminate slaughter?

    On the Midwestern Brotherhood armour: I love how it looks, and the thing is, I actually feel like the lore given for the X-01 prototypes could serve to justify its existence; as an advancement that the Midwest made on the X-01 prototype schematics from elsewhere (maybe from right there in Chicago?), while adding a bit of creative DNA from the T-51b in the materials and their more anatomical design motifs. (and I also notice a level of visual similarity with the East-Coast Enclave's armour, suggesting convergent design)
    I feel like you worded the Fallout 3 karma system for killing NPCs wrong. Killing the evil characters would in theory be good, and killing the good characters would be bad.
    Fallout 4's dialogue system. Here's the thing, I love Mass Effect, but the dialogue wheel is a cumbersome and inconvenient thing that doesn't need to exist when you have the tried and true, and more effective menu, especially since, due to lack of space, then a lot of meaning is lost, and you can end up saying something you absolutely were not trying to say. I don't mind not knowing exactly how the NPC is going to react to what I say; it's a little like how actual conversation can work sometimes, where you can expect one reaction, but get another one instead. But when I can't even tell what I myself am going to say or do in any given moment, then we have a problem. But in Mass Effect's case, at this point, it's just a wheel because it's always been a wheel. Fallout 4 has no excuse. And what's worse, it introduces the compass, which just makes the dialogue wheel from Mass Effect look like a stroke of genius in comparison; the dialogue compass is even more limiting, even more cumbersome, and communicates even less information to the player. It's literally just the dialogue wheel, but with none of the scarce few circumstantial pros, and all of the cons, except even more pronounced. Nobody likes the dialogue compass.

    I actually think that being able to get rich through slavery and still have the highest karma is very fitting in game. In our current society we have companies using child labor to get massively rich while also using donations to get "good karma" irl. A more twisted version of that with slavery is definitely the most fallout thing i can think of

    I honestly cannot stand the complaint about the enemies blocking the path from Goodsprings to New Vegas.
    Going down that path straight off isn't an "exploit". There are stealth boys you can find in the school in Goodsprings and on Joe Cobb's corpse if you kill him to make sneaking past the enemies easier.
    Sneaking past them is supposed to be an option, just a hard one. Because getting to New Vegas is meant to be a challenging thing to do.
    This isn't "limiting your freedom", it's giving you a challenge.

    Having bad karma gets you hunted, and having good karma gets you hunted.
    Sure later down the line, it’s less of a problem, but early game? Guys in combat armor and assault rifles (last I checked it was assault rifles) while you have very little armor is hell to deal with

    The problem with Fallout 3's Karma system is that it works more like a reputation system than a moral system. In New Vegas the developers(Obsidian) solve this problem by adding a proper Reputation system to go along with the karma one.

    As someone who was raised in the Catholic Church, your comments on being able to become rich by selling wastelanders into slavery and then donating to a church. I laughed at the irony of how that was completely possible in a manner of speaking in the history of the church. The history of the church is full of colonization, the holy wars, the Spanish inquisition and such. So many became rich in enslaving indigenous cultures and 'the wicked'

  • @lemonZzzzs
    @lemonZzzzs ปีที่แล้ว +2

    re: FO3 karma... i am tempted to revisit my ancient idea of a mod where some actions (determined by quest values) would reset your karma to a negative state. I did't come up with a similar reason to make it go back to positive so it'd be negative only.
    The idea was, for example, if you sell Bryan Wilks or help the slavers capture bumblebee or what's her name, any time you rest after gaining karma into positive range, you'd get a pop-up saying "you felt good about yourself for a moment there, but you suddenly remember what you've done" and your karma is set back to a sufficiently negative number xD
    ...i wonder if anyone still plays fo3, though. Everyone I know moved on to fo4 and fo76 xD

    • @reaper67309
      @reaper67309 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This sounds like a great idea. I play FO3 and FNV via Tale of two wastelands all the time. In my opinion, i would have a text box appear similar to Oblivion when you are turning into a vampire (the dreams) after each in game day. Clock starts upon finishing a quest with the bad karma option. After a set amount of days (ie an in-game week) your character would "move on" from it and would stop losing chunks of karma.
      You could offset this by donating and giving out water, but like you said, these would only be temporary fixes.
      Some text about the continuous karma loss stopping could look something like:
      "After some time, you realize now that evil may be needed in this world. What isn't needed, is a permanent grip on the past. Time to let go."

    • @lemonZzzzs
      @lemonZzzzs ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@reaper67309 I think, I had my script quest-based, checking after every rest to see if specific quest states were reached... so there was no need for a timer. That being said, your ideas of adding offsets to that condition via good deeds sounds nice (albeit possibly tricky to implement, unless reworked as variable based, rather than just quest marker based).
      Sadly I lost all my mod work along with a bunch of other stuff a few years ago, so I'd have to start from scratch.. hence not really modding anymore. Maybe someone else could pick this up :D

    I don't like Roy, at all. How is he a good character when his plan involves murdering innocent people who just wanna live in peace? Most of them don't even have problems with ghouls, and on top of that, if Tenpenny wants to have requirements for living in the tower (that supposedly he built) he's allowed to. It may be the post apocalyptic wasteland, but the tower is his property, and Roy murders everyone regardless of a peaceful solution or not. That quest has always bothered me,

    Personality, I think Fallout 4's leveling system was almost as bad as the dialogue changes. I wish they went even more Skyrim with leveling. We only get 5 skill lines. Not even skill trees, skill straight lines. In Skyrim, there were 18 different skill trees. Imagine fallout with that many options. While Fallout 4 had so few perks, there were no perks specifically for energy weapon builds, and strength was mostly crafting and power armor perks.

    One thing about how new vegas limits the player choice, you can get to vegas from sloane by fighting the deathclaw (its doable by using the 2 earliest follower the game gave you, boone and ED-E) or thru the black mountain shortcut.
    And i like the barren wasteland of the mojave, somehow its more interesting than the wasteland of F3. its hard to notice landmarks in F3 due to the many hills and whatnot, the almost flat mojave made buildings and landmarks more noticable from afar. And locations in FNV is more interesting, but thats my opinion

    The reason why the Brotherhood is different in Tactics is kinda obvious. Survival. You are that Brotherhood: you have just barely survived crashing into the earth, from the sky. Most of your allies are missing or dead. Near enough everyone has scars and injuries from the crash. You are literally surrounded by enemies, and you have whatever supplies survived the crash. You want to cling to tradition, but that doesn't put food on the table. No, beyond everything, survival is the goal. To survive you must adapt.
    The hairy deathclaws are accurate to the lore. Originally they were going to be hairy in the original Fallout, but the technology wasn't there to support it. Now it is.

    While I could rant for hours about bad design decisions in all the games, the most garbage feature of every Fallout game is the ability to savescum due to how the saving system works. Allowing you to rid yourself of any consequences, and allowing you to not have to commit to your playthrough. It is really tempting to just reload a save and try again. This is something that should be delegated to a cheat feature, and not something that is so easy to do. And quicksaving just makes it worse, actively teaching you that you never have to worry about anything as long as you just keep pressing these two buttons.

    So I can guess why cannibalism is lower bad karma than stealing. The dead guy is already dead. *_SOMETHINGS_* gonna eat him anyway. Whereas, when you steal, that person may have needed or have real sentimental value with that piece of junk. Yeah, it's not exactly tasteful to chow down on people, but super desolate desperate times and all that. But if you take my stuff, you're affecting a living person's life and that's gonna be going forward, where if you eat a guy, it sucks, but that's the end of it.

    Thing is, most of the UI things mentioned in first Fallout were already on the mind of Tim Cain, but time restraints did not allow them to make the changes. Tim already wanted bigger money counter, new inventory items appear on top, better menu navigation, looting, "take all" button etc. And the latest addition before shipping was the companions, so they had scripts written hastily to adapt to the player.
    When it comes to small objects or small buttons - don't play on absurdly small resolution then. There is a hotkey that highlights item on the ground.
    When it comes to Fallout 2 I never had complaints on travel speed. You get a car later and I love grinding. I want to discover whole map :)
    Fallout 3 also makes your father the protagonist and you just follow the stories of other people I don't like having my story set in stone and long unskippable tutorial, I want to create my story as I go.
