There was a girl from my highschool that fell from the top of the pyramid and broke her neck because her spotter was jealous because “she stole her boyfriend” She lived but lost nearly all of her memory and her recovery was about 2 years. When she returned she went to see the boyfriend and she didn’t remember that he broke it off while in the hospital, and was dating the jealous girl. She’s doing incredible now, she’s in fashion and merchandising, and Mrs jealousy is now in jail.
Wow, I don’t know if that’s more evil or pathetic. Not to mention her “boyfriend” leaving her for the person responsible for her trauma. What charges was she arrested on?
If anyone is to be blamed, it's the coaches and sports trainers of the school for not properly spotting the stunt. She broke her neck! She's lucky to be alive!!
Too many sports trainers and coaches put too much pressure on young athletes, wanting to produce elite athletes and forget that injuries that require hospitilsation are inevitable. Any person who aspires to be a cheerleader might think twice. I can undertand why some young people find it easier to say "no" to sport,
Cheerleading is very dangerous. All athletes can get injured but those who do extremely dangerous stunts should keep in mind the possibility of paralysis and whether getting to the top is worth it.
My granddaughter was a flyer and was dropped one time. The girls at the bottom did a good job breaking her fall but she still hit the gym floor with a thud so loud that the whole gym went silent. Thankfully she just suffered some bruising.
Ikr? They're literally taught how to do an intubation in medic school, and is a requirement they must pass and get signed off by a medical director in order to get their license. But hey, gotta have unnecessary drama in a drama show I guess lol

Right now, it can take a while for an ambulance to arrive, she would have been lying on the floor with the mother freaking out because no one is helping her daughter just standing around
@drmayeda1 it's a national standard that paramedics know how to do an intubation. They cannot get their license without knowing that skill. And besides, it was stated earlier in the clip that she wasn't breathing. Saving a life trumps any other risk, because that is literally their job. Had they not done the intubation, the girl would have been dead within minutes from lack of oxygen and the mother would now be even more distraught because she watched her daughter pass away in front her while no one did anything to prevent it.
as a former cheerleader, whenever a flyer is in the air, not only should the bases be cautious, but there should be other cheerleaders on the sides to catch the flyer if someone falls.
As an EMT I hate when hospital staff or any other medical provider states things they shouldn’t in front of the pt’s family. It opens us all up for questions and lawsuits
100%. It's good to have hope but things can change so quickly. Best way to do it is to let them know the reality, what you're doing to help the patient, and then to carry it out. I don't know is a perfectly valid answer.
The performance of the grief-stricken mother seems excellent. As the doctor said, when tragedies happen, it's natural to assign blame; and the emergency department staff were the last to handle her child. When anything terrible happens, our minds love to explore the "What ifs" When feeling out of control and helpless, the mother's "What ifs" fall on those tasked with the present situation at hand, especially with no medical knowledge to understand the intricacies and limitations of emergency medicine. This reaction was written quite realistically.
@@DigiDestined13 yup, my mom wouldve been hysterical and screaming for help. This mom is just... "what happened!? Looks at coach with a normal worried expression. "Please help my daughter!" Doesn't ask more questions, isn't trembling, crying, none of that mom stuff.
@@Jeromepkr How so? Yeah, many people in that situation would be in hysterics, but it's not too much of a stretch to expect some to act the way she did, especially if in denial.
If anything, the paramedics were the 1st ones to assist..the doctors were the last ones! After the surgery, it was deemed that she'd never walk..blame the doctors, they make mistakes everyday and I'm living proof of that!
First thing you learn when working in a health centre: you NEVER make those kind of snarky comments to another doctor or nurse in front of a patient. Next thing you know, the patient thinks the doctor’s wrong or don’t know what they’re doing and files an unnecessary complaint which could mean lots of trouble. Edit: I’ve always wanted to do this, this is the most likes I’ve gotten ever and now I get why people get so excited about it😄

As a cheerleader we would've never let something like this happen. Especially with all the girls that could've helped that were in the scene at the time too? We were taught that even if it meant us being injured we would catch the flyer if they were falling.

@ٴ if it was considered a sport (which legally thanx to that damn bill) they there would be the same lvl of safety as gymnastics have bc that is essentially what cheerleading is gymnastics mixed w dance so there is no safety protections in place incas3 of a bad tumble and last I checked(granted has been awhile ) cheerleaders were the leading most other sports in injury and since it isn't a contact sport like foot ball bother American and European basketball or any other sport similar to those cheerleading is a non contact sport we rnt going up against other kids we r doing gymnastics and since there's so safety young woman can die and have died
It's okay for the mother to be angry, but she has to understand her daughter is extremely lucky she didn't kill herself on impact!! Having a neck injury like that paralysis was obvious!! (I don't even know if being paraplegic is possible with that amount of trauma, I'm an EMT not a neurologist)
I mean, this is a TV show, and I'm not an EMT or doctor. I'm just someone who couldn't walk for three years, and now I have trouble walking and I have severe pain in my back and legs 24/7 due to malpractice. If someone gave me the choice of never waking up, or waking up paralyzed from the neck down- I'd pick the former. I'm sorry, unless a person is EXTREMELY wealthy, the quality of life just isn't there. And if a mistake or injury was made, that absolutely needs to be addressed and there needs to be a reevaluation to see if something else could've been done to preserve her live AND her mobility.
I figured I'd come give my story, as a survivor of a severe neck break. Lady plowed into the back of my friends car and sent us flying and rolling. The impact burst fractured my C5, it collapsed a lung, lacerated my spleen, broke my wrist and fingers on one hand, destroyed one hip and tore discs all up and down my spine. After the wreck, I could hear what was going on around me and hear my bestie freaking out but I couldn't speak or move. I kept trying, because my bestie was screaming my name in panic thinking I was dead. The initial break I was momentarily paralyzed, due to the shock of the break. Thankfully a nurse got to scene driving by and kept me from moving until paramedics got there. In the hospital I was in icu for a week. The neurologist that was handling me incase I needed immediate surgery for the neck told my parents I was very VERY lucky and that out of all the patients he'd seen with my neck injury were paralyzed from the neck down or dead. I did suffer some permanent nerve damage and eventually had to have a titanium plate put in, and though I have terrible migraines and neck pain on and off...I feel very blessed to still be alive and to be able to walk. The wreck damaged other discs in my back so I deal with severe chronic pain and still need a hip replacement after 2 hip surgeries from a torn labrum as well but...I use it and push myself. I handle my pain as best as I can and I have my bad days and my good days but I'd never have chosen to just die.....the torment that puts on a parent is terrible....so I'm thankful my parents didn't loose me
@@MissSpaz considering it's a pretty basic TV show i would bet money that there was nothing in that instance that could have beem done better without even watching the episode i would guess the rest of it focusses on the intubation part as the mother tries to get the paramedic lady in jail. considering she's one of the main characters it will be undoubtedly proven that she was right to do what she did
As a Former Fire Chief and Paramedic I had a difficult situation with a scene call. I had a mid 20's patient who's throat was swelling and closing fast. I have done surgical cricothyrotomy before, but the local Jurisdiction didn't have it in there protocols, so I called Medical Control and was advised to do what is necessary, but it will be highly reviewed at the patient is under care of another provider! Since I had no medical supplies that directly involved a surgical cricothyrotomy, I had to improvise. That patient survived and now has a large family of there own and started a company of there own! It was very rewarding to know I made a positive difference!
Suing the hospital was really her only hope of financial stability. The hospital bill alone will destroy the family, let alone the follow up care costs, possible need to revamp the house to be wheelchair accessible, the sudden news that mom is going to be a lifelong care giver to her disabled daughter, goodbye retirement, most likely her marriage (many marriages split up when such a thing happens). Goodbye college cheer scholarship, and possibly any savings meant for other kids futures. It's not just the horrible injury. She experienced that horrible injury in one of the worse countries in the world to be hurt in, oh sure they'll save her life, but only in America do you wish they hadn't.
@@beesimone3073 quadriplegic is a very misunderstood term. It doesn’t mean you can move your arms at all. It means your function depends on the level you broke your neck. I got luck, at my level of injury I should have floppy hands and I have about 70% of my hand function. With that said I have friends with my arms and hand that can still send texts and reply. They use a mouth stylist or voice recognition.
As a backspot myself that part was infuriating! Like what happened to putting yourself between the flyer and the ground? Now I know bases are meant to save the stunt but backspots are there to save the flyer! And if you’re aware that the stunt isn’t done with 100% consistency then you have spotters! (Even our more experienced stunt groups prefer to have frontspots with certain stunts that one first glance can look routine)
she is VERY lucky to be alive. an injury of that nature, to the depths it is, does not have a high survival rate, let alone a high rate where survivors become fully mobile again. although not impossible, it’s highly unlikely and blaming a doctor for a freak accident that happened in a sport, isn’t morally ok. now if there was medical misconduct, yes. but there wasn’t. having a stage of denial doesn’t warrant you into creating problems out of thin air just because you can’t deal with the reality of the situation.

Really because I never met someone who is paralyzed from the neck down who by their own admission is only still alive because their family forces it...some fates are worse than death.

I'm not even a medic of any kind and I was getting so mad about all the people standing around and was pretty sure none of how they were moving her was OK
They could have found a way to stabilize her head without a c-collar, too. We were trained to hold the patient's head in the position we found them in. It seems likely their moving her head around resulted in the paralysis.
That delivery of the "Looks like you might be a little chilly, are you chilly? You know what, I'm gonna get you a blanket" line felt so normal, like in hospitals in real life. The next time I hear someone say something in that way in the hospital, I'm going to be paranoid she's actually trying to stay calm in the face of an emergency!

Well, I don't think the Doctors can do everything. Most people are thankful to Doctors and thank God when things are at their darkest. The Doctor told my friend to take her dad home to die that there was nothing they could do for him. So they accepted it they prayed and that was 5 years ago and he is still here and was able to dance at my friends wedding. Sometimes Doctors give up and people have no choice but to turn to God. That's just life.
Doctors are not working for free. They're getting paid heavily!!! So yeah if they can't do their job properly then it's okay to blame and sue them....... Show me one doctor who is not living a fancy life!!!
I know someone this happened to exactly like this. It was at a local college my friend went to. I met this girl and she was stunningly beautiful and really popular (and the head cheerleader) and one day she fell from some pyramid or something. I ran into her a couple weeks later at the dorm and she was more or less okay, but could never do anything athletic again. She was such a sweet girl and talked to me about my friend while I waited for her. Really sad for her because it's rare someone that popular and nice was such a genuinely good person.
Spinal injuries are unpredictable. I was told that when my grandfather was a teenager, he fell off the roof of the cafeteria at his high school and landed on his back but he recovered fully from it. It actually surprised me.

This reminds me of my childhood friend Megan… she flew off a 4 wheeler in her teens and went head first into a railroad tie. She barely survived she was life flighted. She passed away in 2022 she literally went into cardiac arrest due to issues from that accident with the 4 wheeler. She was a childhood friend but I can still remember everything we did together she was so funny and the best friend a girl could have. RIP Megan!

Medical professionals are always the scapegoat. One of the most thankless professions in the world and responsibilities for injuries are very rarely blamed on the reason, the person or whomever, whatever caused the injury
That is absolutely correct. Precisely to avoid situations like this. The professional thing to do is to keep such criticisms or snarky comments in private between physicians, nurses and EMTs and only after a fault has been proven to have been committed to even consider telling that outside of the health professionals in charge.
I have seen people get limited movement back in some body parts YEARS after this type of thing. While it’s not always the case, it’s best to not give up. There is a chance and it’s worth taking. Lots of hard therapy later you never know how you will be.
So true, i was hit by vehicle walking had 17 bones broke 6 were in my back. Im still in some pain and it took me a year to walk but ive made it. At one point my mom was taking me off life support but i made it. Noone really knows results and things can turn around sometimes
nerves regenerate at the rate of 1 inch per month. If the nerve has to regenerate from the spine, it could take a few years before you have feeling in your legs again.
I was a flyer a long time ago. I had an accident that left me with 3 surgeries and back injuries for life. That was 30 years ago. When I see what these girls do, now, I get anxiety. The sport has become too dangerous. Dial it back. These are young girls
My mom wrecked her car six years ago a few days before Christmas. She was taking me to my friends house so i could spend the night over there. She dropped me off, and on her way home she took the worse route than the one we took to get there and she was not familiar with the road. It was very snowy and black ice was everywhere, there is an invisible turn. It looks like a strait shoot but it takes a downhill left turn and there is no guardrail, she flipped her car four times in the field beside the turn. She is absurdly lucky that someone was behind her and they Immediately called ems. I got a call around 9:00 PM that she was on her way to the hospital and my dad came and picked me up, she was in surgery for hours and hours. When I finally got to see her she looked like a ghost, her head was cracked all the way across has a lot of staples, and she looked horrible. A few days later she woke up, and she was told by the doctors that she broke her c1 c2 and c4 vertebrae along with a broken rib, severe nerve damage and multiple other broken bones. She was told she would never walk again. She spent the next 8 months in the hospital and after a lot of rehab she finally got to go home. It started out with therapy eventually she stopped seeing the therapists, and I then started working with her to help circulate blood and try and build up lost muscle in her limbs from not being able to move. Today she can walk, even got her drivers license renewed. On her 52 birthday in November, she was even driving my dads UTV on a gravel trail and on the main road (it’s street legal). All that after the doctor said she wouldn’t walk again. Now she’s not completely normal, her neck is fused downwards and has very limited movement with her fingers and her left leg. But she can walk, drive, write, she still cleans with the help of her aids that come in daily. I always kept her motivated when she was recovering, you never know what’s going to happen and it was truly a miracle
I was a cheerleader from 4th grade until college. This was in the 70’s and early 80’s. If we got hurt we would wrap it, tape it or bandage it and go back to cheering. We didn’t think anything about it. I’m glad that it is much safer now and that it is viewed as a sport instead of a activity
I think if in the moment she told the mom "we have two options, we leave her how she is and transport her and she probably dies because she doesn't get oxygen, OR we move her neck so we can intubate but it might cause paralysis. Pick your poison". Mom can't be mad if it was her own call knowing the risks.
would have sued for the emotional damage, if forced to decide the mother could argue she made a choice under pressure, something everyday people are not trained for. also the mother would likely then blame herself for whatever the outcome would be. its a situation you cant win.
@@ITechHero She could have sued all she wanted, but I think if she'd made the decision the courts would rule it was an act of God that placed her in the position, not any human she could blame for it. Most states also have Good Samaritan laws--it's almost impossible to sue a paramedic or first responder in a situation like this unless you can prove radical negligence or incompetence. And you often can't sue a layman, even one who made the situation worse, if they were attempting to help while waiting for professionals. It's to protect people who act in good faith only to run afoul of someone like this mother, who's just looking for someone to blame.
Firstly she isn’t medically trained to now the full repercussions of the decisions she is making and if your going to give that choice then that’s like asking “do you want a tourniquet on you femoral bleed where you could possibly loose your limb!! By the way you have 30 seconds to decide or you’ll die from blood loss!!

She was only 17. 😢 Most people really have no idea how dangerous cheerleading actually is. One wrong move, one wrong hand slip and that's all it takes to do horrific damage. That doesn't even touch on the other extremely common injuries. Like sprains, strains , broken bones , pulled muscles and back injuries that are considered "minor" injuries.
It depends on where your neck is broken. Anything that fractures the first three vertebrae of your neck (C1, C2, C3) can instantly kill you. But breaking lower down on your neck can be potentially survivable. Still incredibly dangerous.
@@fabplays6559 plus it depends on the fracture. It's not about the bones, it's about the nerves - if the bones are cracked a bit, it might be ok. But if the spinal cord is damaged, then it's life-threatening.
I had a patient in the hospital suffer from an internal decapitation. She was in her teens I believe and broke her neck from a car accident. Anytime we had to suction her or move her she would start to crash. This was about 12 years ago when I was an RT (respiratory therapist) student going through clinicals. I was also a medic for about 10 years at the time. This is a devastating injury to have. Probably the worst there is!
@@john187a 70% of those who have this injury die immediately and I believe another 15% die while in the hospital. If the spinal cord is severed along with the decapitation then you will remain paralyzed from the neck down. They call this an “internal decapitation” because all of the ligaments and so on holding the skull to the spinal column is severed basically leaving the skull “floating” on its own. It’s not attached to anything anymore. Apparently the veins and arteries can also face damage leading to strokes. I’ve only seen 1 person with this and it was when I was in clinicals when I was in my respiratory therapy program. Anytime we suctioned her or moved her her heart rate plummeted. I suspect she probably didn’t survive but I don’t know. I believe her spinal cord was severed which means she would be permanently paralyzed. These injuries are thankfully very very rare. It’s one way I wouldn’t want to die or to suffer lifelong paralysis that way and having my heartbeat plummet just from being stimulated. Awareness during cardiac arrest is super rare also and I’ve seen two of those and most people have never seen awareness during a cardiac arrest. We probably have a higher chance of being struck by lightning than to have either of these conditions. Both are two ways I wouldn’t want to go through.

If her heart rate and blood pressure are going to plummet with simple stimulation my guess is that during one of these episodes they were not able to get the vital signs up but that’s just a guess. She was a quadriplegic from the accident as well. If it was me I wouldn’t want to live like that! I have several disabilities going on to where I’m in the hospital too often with life threatening infections but I can still survive on my own. This girl would crash just from suctioning her or moving her. Can’t imagine living like that. I do wonder from time to time about her though.
@@debrakleid5752 Didn't Christopher Reeve also suffer from an "internal decapitation" caused by a fall off his horse head first on the ground? He died from cardiac arrest after being given an antibiotic for a bed sore infection. I don't remember exactly as it was almost 20 years ago now.
I'm the captain of my college cheer squad, one of my girls actually passed away after falling off out famous really tall pyramid last year. Her death hit me hard because she and I got along so well, her name was Lily, and she was one of my star girls

You are correct as far as initial treating the patient but it’s HRABC where H is hazard assessment to both yourself and the patient , R is response…….is the patient responding to stimuli such as audio or physical touch. Both H and R can be and generally are carried out as you approach the victim / patient and then as you say it’s ABC’s . The only thing that outranks that would be an excessive bleed such as an arterial bleed .
You always try to blame someone when a tragedy happens, it's a human thing, i blame the doctors when my father died, even though my father's illnes didn't have a cure, i blamed myself for not being able to spot something wrong with him then I blamed god for its unfairness.
One of the stages of grief is anger. It's a normal reaction. A quick tempered judgement, but not out of tue blue. People tend to think there's and order with denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, but it can happen in any order, skip stages, or repeat stages.

A guy I grew up with was on a swim team and dove and hit his head on the bottom of the pool and was paralyzed for life. Humans weren't built for extremes. We never learn.
In my school, we had where the guardians had to have proof of medical insurance for being a cheerleader. It’s a lot more dangerous than it sometimes looks especially for the “flyers.”
I have no idea what station he transferred too when he became an EMT but it seems to be a cut below the crew at Firehouse 51 and a bad career move......or a desperate one, the script writing and acting was horrible.

Neck-down paralysis is the WORST! Imagine NOT being able to floss your teeth when something is stuck in them and it's PAINFUL, or scratch your face when it feels itchy (among other COMPLEX things)!😢
This does happen to cheerleaders. I’ve seen interviews with girls who are paralyzed because of cheerleading accidents. It’s because of this that my girlfriend and I both agreed that if we ever have a daughter, we will never let her be a cheerleader.
Good decision. As parents you should do best for your children. And yeah sometimes they might really want something but as they grow up they will understand. If this kind of injury happens the pain isn't just from the injury. It's also the massive monthly bills.
I guess if the soft tissue (skin, muscle, blood vessels) is intact, your brain is still getting the blood it needs to sustain life, but jeez, that's a pretty precarious state to be in. The descriptor says it all: internal decapitation. 😱
spine is just meat and bone. It can heal. The spinal cord is the real issue. IT was not severed, so it's just a matter of controlling swelling and waiting for her to heal. also a lot of swelling can prevent sensation ad control so she may still improve after a few weeks. But if the nerve cord is cut, that's it.
She literally moved forward. The other girl already knew she was gonna fall as soon as she moved her footing out of her grasp. If the mom had been watching her daughter instead of the game, she'd know what happened. But nooo, she wants to blame the people who helped keep her alive.
That was honestly just poor editing and planning. The actress or stunt double was clearly prepping for the fall, and the edit shows the girl who was supposed to have her foot as she starts falling the cuts back to the girl right before she falls.
@@savanna8797 I’m talking about the part in your comment where you said she moved her foot out of the girls hand and the other girl knowing it was going to happen. And I was referring to how the edit was poorly put together and her looking too prepared for the fall ruined the affect of the fall. The clip where they show the other flyers reaction looked too planned when she takes her foot out of her hand when she’s supposed to be falling. Then it jumps to clip that shows the whole stunt and she’s just starting to fall again. No need to be rude, I was just pointing out that the way it looked, as you described it, was poorly presented.
I was in middle school when one of our flyers fell and shattered her knee cap. It was super traumatizing. I can’t watch stunts without holding my breath now. Watching Netflix’s Cheer had me constantly screaming “catch your flyers!”
The way there were no cheerleaders on the sides, keeping an eye on the Flyers is super concerning to me. There should be many watching just in case and the ones on the ground should be positioned in a way where catching their flyer is almost instant. NEVER LET YOUR FLYER FALL!!
In real life the concerned parent would be picking up and shaking the child all about, worsening the damage. Uncontrollable parents panic (excused as love) is so dangerous.
i saw a documentary on internal decapitation before. The survival rate is extremely low. The recovery rate is even lower. The doc was about a teen who had this injury and fully recovered from it. He had to relearn how to move his whole body and do basic tasks again, but he fully recovered and can live a normal life. The doctor in the documentary said that he had only heard of 2 cases in which the person wasn't completely paralyzed from the neck down and that case was one of them.
It took me this entire clip for me to realise that this was not a House MD video. I kept expecting him to just come in all guns blazing and tell us that it wasn't the neck injury that paralyzed her or something crazy.

Now this kind of behavior is what makes lots of health care professionals reluctant to help cuz they know if they do, they'll be entangled in big lawsuits, so letting the patient go sometimes is easier. I work with lots of scared doctors and nurses it's unfortunate.
Typically, you don't want to move someone's neck after an accident because if it is fractured you risk doing damage to the spinal cord and can leave a patient paralyzed or worse. However, sometimes there are instances where you need to do what is best for the patient. They needed to bag her and put a C-collar on to stabilize her neck from further damage, and you need a patient's head to be more mid-line for that usually. Her being paralyzed wouldn't have been as bad as her losing her life on the scene had they been unable to bag. In the real world, they stabilize the patient and would either get c-spine xrays or a CT head and neck to check for damage before a doctor clears them for manipulation of the neck.
She wasn't breathing. With a head or neck injury it is ok to move someone if they are in a dangerous situation. This isn't an ideal situation but it was necessary to save her life.
Goes back to the ABCs (airway, breathing and circulation). That takes priority over spinal injury. If they are not breathing, they will be dead in minutes. Need to line up the head to do rescue breathes. If she went into cardiac arrest, they would do compressions even with the spinal injury.
Christopher Reeve had the same injury, his skill separated from the spine; however, the actual spinal column was bruised, but remained intact. Look at what happened to him. Some blamed the lay person who did CPR on him. The tentative thing that was done was the airway. They had to move her head to maintain an airway. Unfortunate but it happens. Cheerleading and gymnastics have a high rate of serious injury because no one who teaches it is properly trained.
Erm, Where did you get this from? She never once said she didn't want to take care of her daughter at all. Her mom was upset and angry, it's a natural response, one of the first responses to something this devastating is anger, you want to put the blame on someone else. It's not right but it's natural.

As a cheerleader myself, it got to be because no one should have fell from a stunt especually not from extintion. Glad shes ok. The reason why she fell was wither because the bases didnt have her foot correctly or she wasnt squezzing from being on one leg. Praying for her tho
As a flyer, the bases should definitely be more cautious! Obviously you cant catch every fall, but you should obviously pay attention and be safe, they also shouldn't have just let the flyer fall to the side, they should have caught her in some way.
i would feel bad but remember they are about to get a bill for upwards of a million dollars from the hospital who is to blame for that. i used to feel bad but hospitals brought it on themselfs.

Something like this happened at my work. I worked at a convention center and we had a lot of cheerleading and dance competitions and during a cheer competition a girl fell from the top of the pyramid. She broke her ribs, punctured her lung and died a couple days later. We were right across the street from a hospital so there was no delay in care and we always had EMTS on site during events.
Looking to blame the hospital when they were up front about how severe a neck insure like that was. Lady...her skull was LITERALLY detached from her spine!!
As a former high school and collegiate cheerleader, I can tell you that the way she fell should never happen. There is ALWAYS extra spotters around when doing stunts, not to mention the physics of that pyramid would not cause her to fall that way. She would have had to do that on purpose to fall like that, and again there should have been someone spotting that. I have been accidentally dropped but I never hit the ground without at least someone's hands slowing me down on the way to lessen the fall. There is a correct way to fall to help others catch you... this is not it.

Diaphragm is actually supply c3-c5 phranic nerve. While upperlimb is supplied by c-2 to t-1 so it is possible. I have seen pt with quadruplagia and active respiration and awake.😊
It’s very sad to what happened to this young girl, but it’s most unfortunate what her Mam think and planning to sue the doctors, that is why you think twice to help someone , because people like that.

The problem isn’t the lack of a safety device it’s a lack of spotters and lack of action from the bases and backspot (whose job it literally is to put themselves between the flyer and the floor, one of our backspots actually dived from half way across the gym to land underneath a falling flyer once)
I can understand where the mom is coming from at the end. Your owm child will never walk again or be able to feed themselves, or anything. It's more than just a horrific shock and you want to blame the world - or who ever is closest - because you do not want to believe or accept that it's real. It's the anger and helplessness that brought that emotion out in her (and in normal every day ppl). It's not like suing will make your loved one be mobile again, and - if it wasn't due to malpractice - it's just a strong (and wrong) way to try to gain some semblance of control over something you absolutely can not and won't ever be able to control. I totally understand.
It's ultimately the parent's fault for allowing their child to participate in such a dangerous activity. In 2002 alone, cheerleading lead to 16,000 ER visits. In another year, 567 injuries occurred... 83% of those occurred during practice. It is considered the most Dangerous Sport for Girls in the United States.
I was dropped in a cheer stunt when I was 12 years old and hit my back and head. I couldn't see or breath for a minute. I crawled to the bleachers and they didn't even stop the game. I was lucky there were no injuries except a bruised spinal cord. And bruised shoulder.
as a parent of a child who did competitive cheer for years i don't think any parent would let their child do cheer if they knew the dangers. cheer is like football without pads or rather with the pads on the ground. these girls are being thrown over 15 feet in the air and are counting on 3 other girls catching her.

There was a girl from my highschool that fell from the top of the pyramid and broke her neck because her spotter was jealous because “she stole her boyfriend”
She lived but lost nearly all of her memory and her recovery was about 2 years.
When she returned she went to see the boyfriend and she didn’t remember that he broke it off while in the hospital, and was dating the jealous girl.
She’s doing incredible now, she’s in fashion and merchandising, and Mrs jealousy is now in jail.

Too many sports trainers and coaches put too much pressure on young athletes, wanting to produce elite athletes and forget that injuries that require hospitilsation are inevitable. Cheerleading is very dangerous. All athletes can get injured but those who do extremely dangerous stunts should keep in mind the possibility of paralysis and whether getting to the top is worth it.
My granddaughter was a flyer and was dropped one time. The girls at the bottom did a good job breaking her fall but she still hit the gym floor with a thud so loud that the whole gym went silent. Thankfully she just suffered some bruising.

It may be okay where you live, but not in San Fransisco. The mother should be glad the paramedics came right away. Right now, it can take a while for an ambulance to arrive, she would have been lying on the floor with the mother freaking out because no one is helping her daughter just standing around
@drmayeda1 it's a national standard that paramedics know how to do an intubation. They cannot get their license without knowing that skill. And besides, it was stated earlier in the clip that she wasn't breathing. Saving a life trumps any other risk, because that is literally their job. Had they not done the intubation, the girl would have been dead within minutes from lack of oxygen and the mother would now be even more distraught because she watched her daughter pass away in front her while no one did anything to prevent it.

As an EMT I hate when hospital staff or any other medical provider states things they shouldn’t in front of the pt’s family. It opens us all up for questions and lawsuits
100%. It's good to have hope but things can change so quickly. Best way to do it is to let them know the reality, what you're doing to help the patient, and then to carry it out. I don't know is a perfectly valid answer.

When anything terrible happens, our minds love to explore the "What ifs" When feeling out of control and helpless, the mother's "What ifs" fall on those tasked with the present situation at hand, especially with no medical knowledge to understand the intricacies and limitations of emergency medicine. This reaction was written quite realistically.

If anything, the paramedics were the 1st ones to assist..the doctors were the last ones! After the surgery, it was deemed that she'd never walk..blame the doctors, they make mistakes everyday and I'm living proof of that!
First thing you learn when working in a health centre: you NEVER make those kind of snarky comments to another doctor or nurse in front of a patient. Next thing you know, the patient thinks the doctor’s wrong or don’t know what they’re doing and files an unnecessary complaint which could mean lots of trouble.

I'm sorry, unless a person is EXTREMELY wealthy, the quality of life just isn't there. I figured I'd come give my story, as a survivor of a severe neck break. Lady plowed into the back of my friends car and sent us flying and rolling. The impact burst fractured my C5, it collapsed a lung, lacerated my spleen, broke my wrist and fingers on one hand, destroyed one hip and tore discs all up and down my spine. After the wreck, I could hear what was going on around me and hear my bestie freaking out but I couldn't speak or move. I kept trying, because my bestie was screaming my name in panic thinking I was dead. The initial break I was momentarily paralyzed, due to the shock of the break. Thankfully a nurse got to scene driving by and kept me from moving until paramedics got there. In the hospital I was in icu for a week. The neurologist that was handling me incase I needed immediate surgery for the neck told my parents I was very VERY lucky and that out of all the patients he'd seen with my neck injury were paralyzed from the neck down or dead. I did suffer some permanent nerve damage and eventually had to have a titanium plate put in, and though I have terrible migraines and neck pain on and off...I feel very blessed to still be alive and to be able to walk. The wreck damaged other discs in my back so I deal with severe chronic pain and still need a hip replacement after 2 hip surgeries from a torn labrum as well but...I use it and push myself. I handle my pain as best as I can and I have my bad days and my good days but I'd never have chosen to just die.....the torment that puts on a parent is terrible....so I'm thankful my parents didn't loose me

As a Former Fire Chief and Paramedic I had a difficult situation with a scene call. I had a mid 20's patient who's throat was swelling and closing fast. I have done surgical cricothyrotomy before, but the local Jurisdiction didn't have it in there protocols, so I called Medical Control and was advised to do what is necessary, but it will be highly reviewed at the patient is under care of another provider! Since I had no medical supplies that directly involved a surgical cricothyrotomy, I had to improvise. That patient survived and now has a large family of there own and started a company of there own! It was very rewarding to know I made a positive difference!

Suing the hospital was really her only hope of financial stability. The hospital bill alone will destroy the family, let alone the follow up care costs, possible need to revamp the house to be wheelchair accessible, the sudden news that mom is going to be a lifelong care giver to her disabled daughter, goodbye retirement, most likely her marriage (many marriages split up when such a thing happens). Goodbye college cheer scholarship, and possibly any savings meant for other kids futures. It's not just the horrible injury. She experienced that horrible injury in one of the worse countries in the world to be hurt in, oh sure they'll save her life, but only in America do you wish they hadn't.

@@beesimone3073 quadriplegic is a very misunderstood term. It doesn’t mean you can move your arms at all. It means your function depends on the level you broke your neck. I got luck, at my level of injury I should have floppy hands and I have about 70% of my hand function. With that said I have friends with my arms and hand that can still send texts and reply. They use a mouth stylist or voice recognition.

As a backspot myself that part was infuriating! Like what happened to putting yourself between the flyer and the ground? Now I know bases are meant to save the stunt but backspots are there to save the flyer! And if you’re aware that the stunt isn’t done with 100% consistency then you have spotters! (Even our more experienced stunt groups prefer to have frontspots with certain stunts that one first glance can look routine)

she is VERY lucky to be alive. an injury of that nature, to the depths it is, does not have a high survival rate, let alone a high rate where survivors become fully mobile again. although not impossible, it’s highly unlikely and blaming a doctor for a freak accident that happened in a sport, isn’t morally ok. now if there was medical misconduct, yes. but there wasn’t. having a stage of denial doesn’t warrant you into creating problems out of thin air just because you can’t deal with the reality of the situation.
I don’t see how being paralysed for life is the better outcome. If people are happy to live like that then good on em. I couldn’t.

They could have found a way to stabilize her head without a c-collar, too. We were trained to hold the patient's head in the position we found them in. It seems likely their moving her head around resulted in the paralysis.
That delivery of the "Looks like you might be a little chilly, are you chilly? You know what, I'm gonna get you a blanket" line felt so normal, like in hospitals in real life. The next time I hear someone say something in that way in the hospital, I'm going to be paranoid she's actually trying to stay calm in the face of an emergency!

Well, I don't think the Doctors can do everything. Most people are thankful to Doctors and thank God when things are at their darkest. The Doctor told my friend to take her dad home to die that there was nothing they could do for him. So they accepted it they prayed and that was 5 years ago and he is still here and was able to dance at my friends wedding. Sometimes Doctors give up and people have no choice but to turn to God. That's just life.
Doctors are not working for free. They're getting paid heavily!!! So yeah if they can't do their job properly then it's okay to blame and sue them.......

I know someone this happened to exactly like this. It was at a local college my friend went to. I met this girl and she was stunningly beautiful and really popular (and the head cheerleader) and one day she fell from some pyramid or something. I ran into her a couple weeks later at the dorm and she was more or less okay, but could never do anything athletic again. She was such a sweet girl and talked to me about my friend while I waited for her. Really sad for her because it's rare someone that popular and nice was such a genuinely good person.
Spinal injuries are unpredictable. I was told that when my grandfather was a teenager, he fell off the roof of the cafeteria at his high school and landed on his back but he recovered fully from it. It actually surprised me.

This reminds me of my childhood friend Megan… she flew off a 4 wheeler in her teens and went head first into a railroad tie. She barely survived she was life flighted. She passed away in 2022 she literally went into cardiac arrest due to issues from that accident with the 4 wheeler. She was a childhood friend but I can still remember everything we did together she was so funny and the best friend a girl could have. RIP Megan!

Medical professionals are always the scapegoat. One of the most thankless professions in the world and responsibilities for injuries are very rarely blamed on the reason, the person or whomever, whatever caused the injury

I have seen people get limited movement back in some body parts YEARS after this type of thing. While it’s not always the case, it’s best to not give up. There is a chance and it’s worth taking. Lots of hard therapy later you never know how you will be.
So true, i was hit by vehicle walking had 17 bones broke 6 were in my back. Im still in some pain and it took me a year to walk but ive made it. At one point my mom was taking me off life support but i made it. Noone really knows results and things can turn around sometimes

nerves regenerate at the rate of 1 inch per month. If the nerve has to regenerate from the spine, it could take a few years before you have feeling in your legs again.

I was a flyer a long time ago. I had an accident that left me with 3 surgeries and back injuries for life. That was 30 years ago. When I see what these girls do, now, I get anxiety. The sport has become too dangerous. Dial it back. These are young girls
More girls are injured in cheerleading than in football. And that's saying something.
My mom wrecked her car six years ago a few days before Christmas. She was taking me to my friends house so i could spend the night over there. She dropped me off, and on her way home she took the worse route than the one we took to get there and she was not familiar with the road. It was very snowy and black ice was everywhere, there is an invisible turn. It looks like a strait shoot but it takes a downhill left turn and there is no guardrail, she flipped her car four times in the field beside the turn. She is absurdly lucky that someone was behind her and they Immediately called ems. I got a call around 9:00 PM that she was on her way to the hospital and my dad came and picked me up, she was in surgery for hours and hours. When I finally got to see her she looked like a ghost, her head was cracked all the way across has a lot of staples, and she looked horrible. A few days later she woke up, and she was told by the doctors that she broke her c1 c2 and c4 vertebrae along with a broken rib, severe nerve damage and multiple other broken bones. She was told she would never walk again. She spent the next 8 months in the hospital and after a lot of rehab she finally got to go home. It started out with therapy eventually she stopped seeing the therapists, and I then started working with her to help circulate blood and try and build up lost muscle in her limbs from not being able to move. Today she can walk, even got her drivers license renewed. On her 52 birthday in November, she was even driving my dads UTV on a gravel trail and on the main road (it’s street legal). All that after the doctor said she wouldn’t walk again. Now she’s not completely normal, her neck is fused downwards and has very limited movement with her fingers and her left leg. But she can walk, drive, write, she still cleans with the help of her aids that come in daily. I always kept her motivated when she was recovering, you never know what’s going to happen and it was truly a miracle

I was a cheerleader from 4th grade until college. This was in the 70’s and early 80’s. If we got hurt we would wrap it, tape it or bandage it and go back to cheering. We didn’t think anything about it. I’m glad that it is much safer now and that it is viewed as a sport instead of a activity

I think if in the moment she told the mom "we have two options, we leave her how she is and transport her and she probably dies because she doesn't get oxygen, OR we move her neck so we can intubate but it might cause paralysis. Pick your poison". Mom can't be mad if it was her own call knowing the risks.
The daughter probably would've died while the mom struggled to make a decision.
would have sued for the emotional damage, if forced to decide the mother could argue she made a choice under pressure, something everyday people are not trained for. also the mother would likely then blame herself for whatever the outcome would be. its a situation you cant win.

@@ITechHero She could have sued all she wanted, but I think if she'd made the decision the courts would rule it was an act of God that placed her in the position, not any human she could blame for it. Most states also have Good Samaritan laws--it's almost impossible to sue a paramedic or first responder in a situation like this unless you can prove radical negligence or incompetence. And you often can't sue a layman, even one who made the situation worse, if they were attempting to help while waiting for professionals. It's to protect people who act in good faith only to run afoul of someone like this mother, who's just looking for someone to blame.

By the way you have 30 seconds to decide or you’ll die from blood loss!!
It's weird she didn't try to block her fall. Usually it's instinctive to put your arms up to protect your head.
And the bases and spotters are supposed to (try to) catch whoever is falling. Everyone was just like "meeh" lol

The same thing happened to a girl at my school when I was in high school. They accidentally dropped her and she hit the gym floor. She landed on her head. First few days they weren't sure if she was going to live. That's how bad her injuries were. In the end she did survive but she ended up being a quadriplegic for the rest of her life. She also had a traumatic brain injury. It was incredibly terrifying and heartbreaking. She never returned to school. She was only 17. 😢
Most people really have no idea how dangerous cheerleading actually is. One wrong move, one wrong hand slip and that's all it takes to do horrific damage. That doesn't even touch on the other extremely common injuries. Like sprains, strains , broken bones , pulled muscles and back injuries that are considered "minor" injuries.

It depends on where your neck is broken. Anything that fractures the first three vertebrae of your neck (C1, C2, C3) can instantly kill you. But breaking lower down on your neck can be potentially survivable. Still incredibly dangerous.
@@fabplays6559 plus it depends on the fracture. It's not about the bones, it's about the nerves - if the bones are cracked a bit, it might be ok. But if the spinal cord is damaged, then it's life-threatening.

i'd prefer death, living with broken neck i imagine is one of the worst things possible.
I had a patient in the hospital suffer from an internal decapitation. She was in her teens I believe and broke her neck from a car accident. Anytime we had to suction her or move her she would start to crash. This was about 12 years ago when I was an RT (respiratory therapist) student going through clinicals. I was also a medic for about 10 years at the time. This is a devastating injury to have. Probably the worst there is!
Does this type of injury always result in being paralyzed if you survive?
@@john187a 70% of those who have this injury die immediately and I believe another 15% die while in the hospital. If the spinal cord is severed along with the decapitation then you will remain paralyzed from the neck down. They call this an “internal decapitation” because all of the ligaments and so on holding the skull to the spinal column is severed basically leaving the skull “floating” on its own. It’s not attached to anything anymore. Apparently the veins and arteries can also face damage leading to strokes. I’ve only seen 1 person with this and it was when I was in clinicals when I was in my respiratory therapy program. Anytime we suctioned her or moved her her heart rate plummeted. I suspect she probably didn’t survive but I don’t know. I believe her spinal cord was severed which means she would be permanently paralyzed. These injuries are thankfully very very rare. It’s one way I wouldn’t want to die or to suffer lifelong paralysis that way and having my heartbeat plummet just from being stimulated. Awareness during cardiac arrest is super rare also and I’ve seen two of those and most people have never seen awareness during a cardiac arrest. We probably have a higher chance of being struck by lightning than to have either of these conditions. Both are two ways I wouldn’t want to go through.

If her heart rate and blood pressure are going to plummet with simple stimulation my guess is that during one of these episodes they were not able to get the vital signs up but that’s just a guess. She was a quadriplegic from the accident as well. If it was me I wouldn’t want to live like that! I have several disabilities going on to where I’m in the hospital too often with life threatening infections but I can still survive on my own. This girl would crash just from suctioning her or moving her. Can’t imagine living like that. I do wonder from time to time about her though.

I'm the captain of my college cheer squad, one of my girls actually passed away after falling off out famous really tall pyramid last year. Her death hit me hard because she and I got along so well, her name was Lily, and she was one of my star girls

You are correct as far as initial treating the patient but it’s HRABC where H is hazard assessment to both yourself and the patient , R is response…….is the patient responding to stimuli such as audio or physical touch. Both H and R can be and generally are carried out as you approach the victim / patient and then as you say it’s ABC’s . The only thing that outranks that would be an excessive bleed such as an arterial bleed .

One of the stages of grief is anger. It's a normal reaction. A quick tempered judgement, but not out of tue blue. People tend to think there's and order with denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, but it can happen in any order, skip stages, or repeat stages.

A guy I grew up with was on a swim team and dove and hit his head on the bottom of the pool and was paralyzed for life. Humans weren't built for extremes. We never learn.
In my school, we had where the guardians had to have proof of medical insurance for being a cheerleader. It’s a lot more dangerous than it sometimes looks especially for the “flyers.”

This does happen to cheerleaders. I’ve seen interviews with girls who are paralyzed because of cheerleading accidents. It’s because of this that my girlfriend and I both agreed that if we ever have a daughter, we will never let her be a cheerleader.

IT was not severed, so it's just a matter of controlling swelling and waiting for her to heal.
also a lot of swelling can prevent sensation ad control so she may still improve after a few weeks.
But if the nerve cord is cut, that's it.
She literally moved forward. The other girl already knew she was gonna fall as soon as she moved her footing out of her grasp. If the mom had been watching her daughter instead of the game, she'd know what happened. But nooo, she wants to blame the people who helped keep her alive.
That was honestly just poor editing and planning. The actress or stunt double was clearly prepping for the fall, and the edit shows the girl who was supposed to have her foot as she starts falling the cuts back to the girl right before she falls.

The clip where they show the other flyers reaction looked too planned when she takes her foot out of her hand when she’s supposed to be falling. Then it jumps to clip that shows the whole stunt and she’s just starting to fall again. No need to be rude, I was just pointing out that the way it looked, as you described it, was poorly presented.

I was in middle school when one of our flyers fell and shattered her knee cap. It was super traumatizing. I can’t watch stunts without holding my breath now.
Watching Netflix’s Cheer had me constantly screaming “catch your flyers!”
The way there were no cheerleaders on the sides, keeping an eye on the Flyers is super concerning to me. There should be many watching just in case and the ones on the ground should be positioned in a way where catching their flyer is almost instant. NEVER LET YOUR FLYER FALL!!
In real life the concerned parent would be picking up and shaking the child all about, worsening the damage. Uncontrollable parents panic (excused as love) is so dangerous.

I was there, gave her a standing ovation.
i saw a documentary on internal decapitation before. The survival rate is extremely low. The recovery rate is even lower. The doc was about a teen who had this injury and fully recovered from it. He had to relearn how to move his whole body and do basic tasks again, but he fully recovered and can live a normal life. The doctor in the documentary said that he had only heard of 2 cases in which the person wasn't completely paralyzed from the neck down and that case was one of them.
It took me this entire clip for me to realise that this was not a House MD video. I kept expecting him to just come in all guns blazing and tell us that it wasn't the neck injury that paralyzed her or something crazy.
She lost her daughter basically, so it's natural she tries to get something out of it.
Now this kind of behavior is what makes lots of health care professionals reluctant to help cuz they know if they do, they'll be entangled in big lawsuits, so letting the patient go sometimes is easier.
I work with lots of scared doctors and nurses it's unfortunate.

isn't that wrong to fix someone's neck after a trauma?
Typically, you don't want to move someone's neck after an accident because if it is fractured you risk doing damage to the spinal cord and can leave a patient paralyzed or worse. However, sometimes there are instances where you need to do what is best for the patient. They needed to bag her and put a C-collar on to stabilize her neck from further damage, and you need a patient's head to be more mid-line for that usually. Her being paralyzed wouldn't have been as bad as her losing her life on the scene had they been unable to bag. In the real world, they stabilize the patient and would either get c-spine xrays or a CT head and neck to check for damage before a doctor clears them for manipulation of the neck.
She wasn't breathing. With a head or neck injury it is ok to move someone if they are in a dangerous situation. This isn't an ideal situation but it was necessary to save her life.

Goes back to the ABCs (airway, breathing and circulation). That takes priority over spinal injury. If they are not breathing, they will be dead in minutes. Need to line up the head to do rescue breathes. If she went into cardiac arrest, they would do compressions even with the spinal injury.
In case you're wondering, you are supposed to wait for someone to yell "CALL 911!!!" before doing anything

Christopher Reeve had the same injury, his skill separated from the spine; however, the actual spinal column was bruised, but remained intact. Look at what happened to him. Some blamed the lay person who did CPR on him. The tentative thing that was done was the airway. They had to move her head to maintain an airway. Unfortunate but it happens. Cheerleading and gymnastics have a high rate of serious injury because no one who teaches it is properly trained.

As a cheerleader myself, it got to be because no one should have fell from a stunt especually not from extintion. Glad shes ok. The reason why she fell was wither because the bases didnt have her foot correctly or she wasnt squezzing from being on one leg. Praying for her tho

As a flyer, the bases should definitely be more cautious! Obviously you cant catch every fall, but you should obviously pay attention and be safe, they also shouldn't have just let the flyer fall to the side, they should have caught her in some way.

Something like this happened at my work. I worked at a convention center and we had a lot of cheerleading and dance competitions and during a cheer competition a girl fell from the top of the pyramid. She broke her ribs, punctured her lung and died a couple days later. We were right across the street from a hospital so there was no delay in care and we always had EMTS on site during events.
Looking to blame the hospital when they were up front about how severe a neck insure like that was. Lady...her skull was LITERALLY detached from her spine!!

As a former high school and collegiate cheerleader, I can tell you that the way she fell should never happen. There is ALWAYS extra spotters around when doing stunts, not to mention the physics of that pyramid would not cause her to fall that way. She would have had to do that on purpose to fall like that, and again there should have been someone spotting that. I have been accidentally dropped but I never hit the ground without at least someone's hands slowing me down on the way to lessen the fall. There is a correct way to fall to help others catch you... this is not it.

Diaphragm is actually supply c3-c5 phranic nerve. While upperlimb is supplied by c-2 to t-1 so it is possible.

The problem isn’t the lack of a safety device it’s a lack of spotters and lack of action from the bases and backspot (whose job it literally is to put themselves between the flyer and the floor, one of our backspots actually dived from half way across the gym to land underneath a falling flyer once)
I can understand where the mom is coming from at the end. Your owm child will never walk again or be able to feed themselves, or anything. It's more than just a horrific shock and you want to blame the world - or who ever is closest - because you do not want to believe or accept that it's real. It's the anger and helplessness that brought that emotion out in her (and in normal every day ppl). It's not like suing will make your loved one be mobile again, and - if it wasn't due to malpractice - it's just a strong (and wrong) way to try to gain some semblance of control over something you absolutely can not and won't ever be able to control. I totally understand.
I was legit shocked to see that this show is more than a decade old. It doesn't look it.

In another year, 567 injuries occurred... 83% of those occurred during practice. It is considered the most Dangerous Sport for Girls in the United States.

I was dropped in a cheer stunt when I was 12 years old and hit my back and head. I couldn't see or breath for a minute. I crawled to the bleachers and they didn't even stop the game. I was lucky there were no injuries except a bruised spinal cord. And bruised shoulder.
as a parent of a child who did competitive cheer for years i don't think any parent would let their child do cheer if they knew the dangers. cheer is like football without pads or rather with the pads on the ground. these girls are being thrown over 15 feet in the air and are counting on 3 other girls catching her.
