Check out the history of Denmark and why Frederick and Mary didn't get a coronation here: • History of Denmark & S...
During her annual New Year’s eve speech in 2023, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced that she will retire. The 83 year old sovereign recently underwent back surgery and experienced a decline in health. On January 14th, 2024, the 52nd anniversary of her father’s death and her own ascension, Margrethe abdicates in favor of her son, now King Frederik X. His Australian wife, Mary will be Queen Consort, and their son, Christian will become Crown Prince. Let’s take a look at the fascinating and artistic life Denmark’s longest reigning monarch and her late husband, Prince Henrik. Then we’ll meet the popular and stylish new King and Queen. Plus I’ll let you know what pomp and ceremony to expect as Margrethe says farewell to her role as monarch and Frederik X ascends to the throne.

The reason she got to do that is in part because Tolkien himself said that her illustrations were exactly like he imagined them. So i guess if you want to know exactly what Tolkien had in mind, look at her illustrations.

They are solid, hard working, active, compassionate family. I love to see Mary's fashions. She keeps herself very fit by running in the rough, horseback riding, swimming, tennis, and more!

As a Dane, I just want to say how thankful and proud I am to have had Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II as our regent throughout my lifetime. In addition to having all the class, style, and devotion to duty and diplomacy you would expect of a royal, she has also always had a great mind and heart. She's intelligent, curious, and well-educated about both national and world history and politics, very creative in the arts, and most importantly (I think), she almost always has a smile on her face, a kind word to say, and a witty sense of humor. We Danes do value seriousness when it's appropriate and appreciated it when The Queen spoke to us about serious issues in her New Year's Eve addresses. At the same time, however, we prefer our royals to have a sense of humor about themselves and don't believe they need to keep a stiff upper lip at all times, as Queen Elizabeth II tended to do. In fact, we want our royals to feel free to laugh and cry when it's natural to do so, because that shows us they're human and makes them relatable to us. That's also why I know that the future King and Queen of Denmark will become just as popular as Queen Margrethe has been (if not more), because both Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary have demonstrated time and time again, that not only do they perform their official duties with a great deal of style and charm - they also have a great sense of humor about themselves. Like the Queen before them, they can talk to anybody about anything and make ordinary people feel special and seen, and that will continue to cement their popularity among the Danes and anywhere they go in the world. See this speech to see what I mean: th-cam.com/video/Wm6LYIgXH2c/w-d-xo.html

I remember watching Prince Henrik's funeral and thinking that Margrethe almost seemed to be shrinking. She lost a good deal of weight very quickly, which I attributed to grief. There’s an interesting TH-cam series about Christian IX being the grandfather of Europe to Queen Victoria as grandmother. It was produced in Denmark I believe. But she spoke of going to England for Elizabeth’s coronation and seeing all the TVs and they didn’t have one in the palace. The Danish royal family seems so down to Earth - Henrik and the former little former prince and princesses’ mothers’ temper tantrums aside. @soniarosen4118 Well, I guess you "missed" the coronation? Since we do not have those since 1848, when Danmark became a Constitutional Monarchy. And Mary will be Queen Mary (Dronning Mary). We do not use that "consort" thing for Queens in Danmark. Margrethe will also remain to be named Queen. Just like her mother Ingrid was until she died in 2.000 (although her husband Frederik the 9th died in 1972 ). Margrethes husband Henrik was "only" named Prince "consort" (Prinsgemal) though. That was known to hurt his French pride a bit! Our new Queen Mary has likely been close to many US politicians already. But I recall a Royal Dinner from 2019, where Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was seated with Crown Princess Mary.

A great video! Nice to see you focus on our history, our dear queen and our (soon-to-be) King Frederik X. It was a great shock to many of us that she chose to abdicate, since she's always stated (as you mention) that she believed in reigning until her death, and no Danish monarch has voluntarily abdicated since Erik III in the 1100s. The last monarch who didn't reign until he died was the deposed Christian II (the bloodbath king).
Personally, I shall greatly miss our beloved, cultured, chainsmoking, chill, statesponsored grandmother. As a historian, I had a great fondness for her, given her own historical and archeological interests, and while I believe that Frederik will be a fairly succesful monarch in his own right (and that those Spanish rumours are exaggerated), he won't be dear Daisy

    17:36 Correction:
Crown Prince Frederik did not go on a 3 month expedition in Greenland, he joined the Sirius Patrol military unit, and went on a 3 month patrol, up the eastern coast of Greenland.
The Sirius Patrol unit is probably the toughest patrol unit in the world. 3 months on their own, with no contact to the outside world, except for radio communication every evening, to report their position, and basically, that they are still alive. It's probably one of very few patrol units, where it's not for certain, you come home alive.
Quite a few have perished, lost a few fingers, an arm, a foot or a leg, due to frost under extreme conditions.
Each Sirius Patrol unit is 2 men, and a handful of dogs. They bring with them everything they need, on a sledge, including food for the men, and the dogs.
The Danish frogmen he entered earlier in his career, is basically the Danish Navy Seals. One of the toughest military trainings out there.
It's not for sure, Frederik would have been accepted in the Sirius military unit, was it not for his skills as a frogman.

Margrethe is an admirable woman. An un-expected monarch, who managed to be a trailblazer for women, as a whole. If anyone ever doubted if women could hold down the ford - she is the one to prove it. It may be constitutionel but mever doubt she has nerves if steel.
The younger generation is also very much adired. The fact that Frederik is a navy seal and also show up to rap-concerts, rock-concerts, is a business ambassadeur, an ivy-league graduate and spend more than one trip to Burning Man, where he ran around in steampunk gear... I'll bow to that.

There hasn't been a coronation in Denmark for over 300 years, they were abolished when absolutism was introduced, and replaced with an annointing, the annointing was then abolished when Denmark became a constitutional monarchy. Today there is simply a proclamation from the balcony of Christiansborg (home of the danish parliament), after which the new monarch makes a brief speech ending with the chosen motto. Since Margrethe is still alive, the proclamation and speech will be a bit different, and there isn't a funeral to follow soon after, instead there will be a celebratory service at the cathedral in Aarhus the week after. Aside from that it's mostly going to be the media doing the celebratory things.

I'm Vietnamese-American-Australian, so yes, I'm super happy to hear that a fellow Aussie is now the queen consort of Denmark. But I was also surprised that her late father-in-law could spoke Vietnamese fluently! When I showed my mom (who's Vietnamese-Australian) this video, she commented, "Oh, Queen Margrethe looked so beautiful! She most certainly has aged gracefully!"

I don't believe they would have chosen Knud!! Because then the next in line after him would have been Ingolf ( child of a near cousin marriage!!! ). That fact is also exactly why, there was a referendum in Danmark 1953. To allow that women could become Reigning Monarch in Danmark. And we could avoid Ingolf eventually becoming the Reigning Monarch. I personally knew someone, that met Ingolf during their agricultural education. Ingolf was /is not among the brightest of people according to him!

I mean just cuz he made the vow at 18 doesn’t mean he can’t revow. Like when you make your wedding vows and then you renew them it’s totally different. My husband and I said our vows when we had just turned 20. We did a vow renewal right after our 14th wedding anniversary. It may sound weird but our vow renewal meant more to me. We had been through a lot in our almost 15 years of marriage, some of it was not good. But we made it through hard times together. When we renewed our vows knowing what we had overcome it make the vows we made to each other on that day much more meaningful. Whatever they decided to do will be of the King’s choosing and will be meaningful to him. 😊

Many people do look down revows at weddings however. And it’s not done in official situations. It would make all question prior vow. The wedding ones are more excuses to party.

I remember she said that she just knew he was the one.

      @@ChibiProwlI think his/her ansestor was danish :)
But as a Dane her, yes, I think Joachim would be the first. Also Vincent. It’s tradition now, that the first born boy, and future aire to the throne, it named Frederik, then Christian for the next generation after that, then Frederik again for the generation after that, and so on.
Like Frederik now is going to be the 10th..!
I don’t know any books on the danish royal familiy

@@ChibiProwl Not that it will happen, because Vincent will be 3rd in line and Joachim 5th in line as of Sunday, but if they chose to go by their first names in this scenario, yes, they would be the first of their names.
However, Joachim has Christian as one of his middlenames and Vincent has Frederik as one of his. If they were to be Kings, they would likely uphold the 500-year long tradition of alternating between Christian and Frederik. They wouldn't be the first Danish Kings to go by their middlename as their regnal name. Both King Frederik the VIII and Frederik the IX (both of which had Christian as their first names and Frederik as their middlename) did that.
The naming tradtion stems from the Oldenburg tradition of naming your child after their grandparent. Christian the I was succeeded by his son Hans (John in English), and he was the only King we ever have had of that name, because circumstances would change after Hans' reign and explains why there are more Christians than Frederiks. Hans was succeeded by his son, Christian the II. But because of scandals, he was forced to abdicate in 1523. He was succeeded by his uncle, the second son of Christian the I, King Frederik the I, who was succeeded by his son, King Christian the III. And that is how the tradition started and still lasts. Until now.
Prince Christian will be the first Danish monarch in 500 years not to receive their first name after his grandparent (Queen Margrethe is named after her maternal grandmother and also have her paternal grandmother's name as a middlename). Though Christian's middlenames does include both of his grandfathers' names; John and Henrik. While it is expected that he will one day take the name Christian the XI, the last of his middlenames is actually a different name of Danish Kings. And actually the name of some of our most famous Kings: Valdemar. So if he wanted to change the tradition, he could be King Valdemar the V. But it is very unlikely to happen.

@@ChibiProwl another fact I forgot is something that has to do with Queen Margrethe’s choice of regnal name. Not her first name. The fact that she chose Queen Margrethe the II.
If we are to be true to historic facts and nitpicky, Queen Margrethe is actually the first official reigning Queen of Denmark in all of our history. You may then wonder why she chose to have “the II” added, instead of just Margrethe or Margrethe the I. To find the reason, we have to go back to the 14th century.
In 1376, King Valdemar the IV of Denmark died without leaving a male heir to the throne. He however had two daughters. The oldest, Ingeborg, who was married to the nephew of the Duke of Mecklenburg, who had conquered the Swedish throne and was now setting his eyes on the Danish. The youngest of Valdemar’s children, Margrete, was married to the King of Norway. And by political genious, she persuaded the Danish and Norwegian nobilities into the idea, that her then five year old son, Oluf, should be named King of Denmark, and when his father died, that the two Kingdoms would merge into a dual monarchy. They agreed, and Oluf was named King of Denmark with her as Regent. And five years later, the dual monarchy was a reality and would last over 400 years. Her dream was however to unite all three Scandinavian Kingdoms under one monarch, and she knew Sweden was interested in a similar union that Denmark had with Norway. Oluf however died at the age of 17 and she had no other children. She used her political mastermind to persuade the nobilities into letting her stay on as Regent, under the condition she produced an heir. Which she found a way around by adopting her sister’s grandson, who took on the joint Scandinavian name of Kings: Erik. While she managed to unite the Kingdoms in the Kalmar Union and she was the real power behind the throne until her death in 1412, she was never recognized as a monarch in her lifetime.
Her legacy was therefore forever changed, on that historic day on January 14th 1972, where Denmark welcomed their first reigning Queen. She took the name Margrethe the II, to honor her namesake with the recognition she was denied in her lifetime. Which is why Margrete Valdemarsdatter today is known as Margrete the I of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
