Q & A: Let us learn about the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church

  • Why are Holy Icons (pictures) in the church important to us?
Did Heaven and Hell exist before Jesus Christ?
What is the role of angels and why do we honor them? Why do we have churches in their names if we are not supposed to worship angels, saints, etc.?
What is the meaning of tabot and why does our church have to have them?

I am traditional roman rite catholic and just wanted to say that I enjoyed this very much. Every response you gave is what I would expect to hear from a practicing catholic. Thank you for sharing! I love to learn about other peoples who Love The Lord Our GOD and do all within their powers to truly serve HIM with all their Hearts and with all their Soul... My prayers are for you! *MUCH LOVE*

Hello. For several years, I have considered visiting an Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. What appeals to me is the idea that this form of Christianity existed in the 1st and/or 2nd Century in Northern African BEFORE colonization and the transatlantic slave trade. This sentiment has grown for me due to the many racial injustices which have occurred here in America in 2020 and before (Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor, Sandra Bland, George Floyd). I am an American-born woman of Panamanian descent (Afro-Latina)...with both parents having been born and brought up in Panamá, Central America. As a baby, I was christened in the Episcopal Church, but later baptized into the Church of Christ at age 11. While I know that there is good and bad everywhere in our world and that "church" is really a condition of the heart and mind and not an emphasis on mere church attendance without fully understanding the significant and the "why" of worship and devotion, I still would like to visit this kind of worship service. Do you know of any reputable, spiritually healthy, doctrinally sound congregations in the Los Angeles, California area which offers English Speaking services? Also to be respectfully dressed and in proper attire for my visitation. I have noticed online that elegantly draped fabric seems to be the dress code and head covering for ladies. Is there a distinction or particular scarf type for single versus married women? For now, I have liked the online talks. Thank You.

I love the way u gave the answer about the tabot and also when u said that finding out things by your self and asking why certain things are like that and why we do it in our church is way better than people come to u n say u should do this n this.
    Once again kale hiwet yasemalin

Hello I'm living in Europe and assisted an Ethiopian orthodox church. I have the feeling this is the most original christian church I've seen. But I do not know if it is possible as non Ethiopian to enter that church because it's very cultural. Can an ex-catolic follow the way which the EOTC shows? Thanks. Greetings.

I am not an expert on this topic but yeah u can participate in certain worships and even to a certain point in the liturgy. However i know that u have to be babtised in the church after learning for 3 year maximum (dont take my word for this time please) to take communion. I am saying this assuming u are not an oriential orthodox. If u are then u get the green pass.
Did i answer ur question or did i get it wrong

Why the ethiopian orthodox church does not have a holly book in Amahric or tigrai. The priest in our country told my friends the book is in Geez. No no one understand geez. I have never seen people any where in the world with no holly book in their language except the Ethiopian ortodox. The Egyptian orthodox have their book in Arabic and the Greek orthodox have their book in Greek and the Russian orthodox in Russian.

"The priest in our country told my friends the book is in Geez." i think you have a vague info... many basic books translated in to other language from Geez but only some service is only in Geez... "Fatima Jesus loves you more than you think "

Good start I listen to you half way but then you started interpreting bible on you own term , well I am assuming you have to backup your religion Orthodox some how and some way .
    On your answer
#2 baptism to babies does remove your original sin, wrong,it is a conformation that you are forgiven on when you receive jesus christ as your lord as saviour.
    #3 jesus sold on Thursday
#4 WODASE maryam the name explains it. It honors Mary "wodase"
#the word of God is one , it is the only Holy book. We can trust it and it is enough.
#Exodos 34 the comandenents were written by god second time. Why need to make copy . Moss did broke the fist on for the same reason you are doing now. it is idolatry worshipping .
    # church and tample, haven are not the same. The real haven you will find is through jesus, but not church.
    # Isaiah 56:4 and revelation 11:19 was totally out of context.
    # the orthodox followers not the religion itself defines their beliefs that is the only right way but never read bible or know if jesus is god.
Stop the religious sense of thinking Christianity, just be Christian which is christ followers.
