The Meaning of Holy & Holiness

  • What does holiness mean in the Bible and Christianity?
Our English word "holy" has a Germanic origin (hailaga), which comes from the word meaning "whole" or "uninjured." It has a similar origin to the English word "health." So, in one sense we refer to a holy person as a "whole" person that is not divided or sickened by sin.
What makes us holy? In other words, what must be present for us to have a holy character?
St. Thomas Aquinas defined holiness as a moral virtue by which our thoughts and actions are directed toward God.
    1) A holy person thinks about God
A holy person's attention is wholly dedicated to God and not distracted or divided by by other desires.
    2) A holy person acts for God.
A holy person's will is united with God's will. Their intentions and actions have God as the goal.
    How to Become Holy
As Christians we are called to holiness, but it is not easy. As Jesus said, we are to "Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Mt 5:48).
He said these words after teaching his disciples the Beatitudes and how to love their enemies.
There is an important distinction here. Holiness is not being on your best behavior. The perfection Jesus taught was a perfection in charity. We are to love God and love our neighbor.
Therefore, how can we become holy? How can we grow in perfect charity?
Thankfully, the Church provides Christians with a path towards holiness:
    1) Prayer - Find closeness with God in the various forms of prayer.
    2) Fasting - Holiness is not possible without taking up your Cross and renouncing the desires of this world.
    3) Almsgiving - To be holy is to love your neighbor, especially those who are in greatest need.
But above all the Sacraments by which we experience the mystical unity with God and receive the grace of Jesus Christ. Through the Sacraments we experience the love of God and go forth sharing that love with others.
The more we are united with God through his love in prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and the sacraments, the more we can direct our thoughts and actions towards him at all times.
    Holy vs. Sacred
While the word holy applies to persons, we use a related word "sacred" to refer to objects, places, or events.

I always thought it meant clean of sin. Through the exact same means as you stated. It's good to know what the root of the word is. And it makes a lot of sense. Thank you. God bless.

False! If you read your bible, you know that Holy-Kodosh in hebrew - means separated. Set apart for GOD.

Also is no sacred geometry or sacred building, it is only geometry or just a building or a place. In christian orthodox religion the words "sacre", "holy", "saint" mean "clean of soul illnesses".
Demons are angels with soul illnesses.
Soul illnesses are schizofreny, autism, oligofreny, depression, panic attacks, paranoia, Tourette syndrome etc.
Soul illnesses are inherited or from sins.
So the question is - why God allows that a demon or demons to enter in somebody and hurt him harder than others or hurt somebody from exterior? We must ask God to show us what to do to be healthy, energic and "young" as other people and to be protected from demons hurts.
