I love it all! You have such a gift - the way you choose your colors, incorporate the underpainting with your chosen subject, and harmonize it all with the mix of mediums is so magical.
Please do try! It's not really a new technique, a lot of sketchbook artist, prepare the pages like this, especially if they are going to work on location.
I have followed you ever since your first Sketchbook Skool course “Imagination.” It is so interesting to watch you grow as a talented artist. It seems many of the artists that I follow are delving into these acrylic ink and markers. Your pages are very dynamic. I will have to dabble in this technique.
Merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo qui explique vraiment bien le process des fonds colorés. Je regarde toutes vos vidéos et j admire la richesse de votre technique avec des outils tres variés. Mille mercis et excellente journée
This and your Provence video are inspiring me to break a long block and start painting again. TY, dear OhnMar-you are masterful at teaching, encouraging-and of course 💓💓💓your work.
I love the idea of under painting texture. Your animals/birds are well done. I do love your owls. Perfect expression with the big eyes. I’m going to have to try some textured under painting.
Thank you so much for this inspiring video! I found out about you from Jackie Hernandez, who used this video as her inspiration. Your gift for shape and color is wonderful, I’m going to try this…love the homes and birds that you did as well as the people. Drawing en plein air is a comfortable process for an art lover and maker 👌
I love your channel SO much! You are such a natural teacher and so pleasant to listen to. Also, your animals are MARVELOUS! You underestimate yourself, I think in this case, because animals are hard to do, but you manage them nicely! My favorite was the deer scene. I tried to do a sea turtle once and boy was it challenging for me! I think I finally gave up on it! I guess it is time to try again!
I'm truly honoured to hear your kind words. I have a natural affinity for Sea Life, being a former scuba diver. I hope to share more sea life related art in future - perhaps otters, walruses and sea birds
Thank you soooo much for teaching this, Ohn Mar! Goodness, this is making my sketchbook so much more enjoyable & easier to work with! Thank you for your generosity in sharing this with all of us.
You inspired me to start a sketchbook in this style today. I bought a watercolor sketchbook at Five Below so the stakes are low 😊. Thank you for sharing your ideas and experiences. I found you through Andrea Nelson. ❤❤❤
This reminds me of an exercice that I did once where we painted a blob and then painted a face from it. It was a great excercise in using your imagination and working with what you have. Really excellent work as always.
Thank you, OMW, for sharing your knowledge with us. I benefitted greatly from your explanations--and I LOVE your enthusiasm and willingness to say, "Oh, I really like that" about something you've created! XOX
This is one of my favorite videos, Ohn Mar! I've been curious about your sketchbook backgrounds, and this video was so fun to watch you have fun with quick splashes of color. I'm fascinated with how your sketches integrate with the backgrounds and take on texture and interest in the finished piece. I can't wait to try this in my sketchbook practice. Thank you so much!
Hi Maria - you are so sweet with your comments. I hope you was able to watch the sketchbook I recently completed after my France art retreat. I feel like I took thinks to another level.
This is so clever! I really want to explore this technique. Having recently sketched using toned paper and loving playing with shadow and highlights, this is an even better idea! I want to try it with the diluted acrylic ink for gouache and colour pencil sketches.
I just found your channel and instantly subscribed! I love your art style. You are so talented! Can you please do more tutorials on how you paint your sketchbook paintings? Love the contrast, values, composition of your art.
So beautiful! I love this idea of created unique and spontaneous background textures because once there’s something on the page, there’s less fear-of-the-white-page to stop oneself from just putting down some marks. I’ve been scared of keeping a sketchbook with more than pencils and pens but I’m hoping to try this and hoping it will make me feel more brave and inspired! Love your artwork. Thanks for sharing your techniques, process and sketches!!
Very inspiring video, as always, thanks Ohn Mar! I must try this. I had thought I would find it too distracting, but your explanations have given me some confidence. Although you do always make it look so effortless!
I just discovered your video and am blown away! I never thought of putting textures onto paper before painting a picture. Not only does it remove the 'fear of the white page' but it also provides a background effect (I'm not great at putting in backgrounds!). I shall certainly be trying this out. Thank you so much!
I had a accident with some red acrylic paint and had to find ways of incorporating it. And I have seen other artist use this texture background technique.
I hope to create a community of like-minded individuals and artists with a similar set up to Patreon. I haven't worked it out yet but watch this Space!
How do you choose the colors for the backgrounds? is it accordingly to what you are planning to paint on them? For example, if you are planning to paint sea views you prefer to use blues/greens/yellows but if it is animals or objects or street views maybe yellow/violet/green/brown?. Thank you! Teresa
It’s pretty random. I often create textured backgrounds weeks in advance and I just turn over the page and paint on it whatever the subject matter might be
Hi - I am watching to see how this is works but I see you also paint on both sides of the paper... Are you ever thinking oh I should leave blank pages in between in case you want to take something out. I am doing it because I love the feel of the paper after it's painted but ahhh I think I can make a book of this set but can't rip the pages out. OK. Going to see the background painting... hopefully. Jackie
I need to try this for sure, it looks like a lot of fun! :D Do you ever choose what to make based on the textures? I'm sure they must also be quite inspiring!
I love it all! You have such a gift - the way you choose your colors, incorporate the underpainting with your chosen subject, and harmonize it all with the mix of mediums is so magical.
Thank you so much! I really enjoy that aspect of just going with the flow
The sea turtle and the elephant are gorgeous!
That's very kind of you to say
I love this technique. Thanks for sharing. I will try this in my own art.
I’ve not seen anyone fill the pages with paint before deciding what to add, this is a really fantastic idea and I might try it 😊
Please do try! It's not really a new technique, a lot of sketchbook artist, prepare the pages like this, especially if they are going to work on location.
That baboon is wonderful. So lovely.
You are so welcome! I'm happy to share.
Stunning. The Zebra is amazing!
You are an amazing artist
I’ve never prepared backgrounds focusing on texture before. What a great technique!
Glad you like it! Hope you give it a go

This technique feels really liberating! Thanks so much for the inspiration

Amazing! A new take on how to deal with blank pages
I completely forgot to mention that, but yes, it would definitely help to get over the fear of the black page
I'll try this one too!

I had a accident with some red acrylic paint and had to find ways of incorporating it. And I have seen other artist use this texture background technique.
I love this video. So great at describing and showing the technique. I have some W&N inks and wondered if they would work for this! Thanks!

Do the inks need to be waterproof so they don't lift later?
I need to try this for sure, it looks like a lot of fun! :D Do you ever choose what to make based on the textures? I'm sure they must also be quite inspiring!
I honestly don't. I just turn out the page and whether it's a landscape. animal or floral I just get on with it.
