Instead of encouraging Gordon to do his best, Reilly decided to put pressure on him and that's why Gordon missed the shot. Reilly was basically saying "If we lose, we're all gonna blame you, because it'll be your fault." Gordon was going through a tough time at this point. His father had just passed away. He was feeling lonely because of that. He needed encouragement instead of pressure. That's why later on when Charlie gets the same opportunity, Gordon encourages him to do his best. "You might make it, you might not. It's okay. Just do your best." Encouragement is what helped Charlie score the winning goal.
Reiley or however he spelled his name, was a jerk. Sure he wanted to win, but he went too far. Gordon had to find his way back to do what he loved.
As a kid I’ll never forget this scene. “If you miss this shot , you’re not just letting me down you’re letting your whole team down” terrible thing to tell a pee wee. Always told myself if I become a coach I’d never do this 😅
Absolutely. With the almost haunting music in the background, it's hard to forget thinking how this scenario would be stressful for a kid. Such a brilliant opening to a story.
Don't forget Adidas teamed up with Disney to release the 1992 Ducks Conway jersey and the 1973 Hawks Bombay jersey! As of this post (11/3/2022), I have not found an official release date. The announcement was made 2 days ago!
I would’ve told him. “Try your best kid… remember your training and be confident..” different times I guess
3:30 I remember my Mom said that's a really bad coach right there. I can see now what my Mom Meant. He should've encouraged the kid to do his best on the penalty shot. If he makes it, huge. If he misses, encourage the kid to shake it off and get ready for his next shift.
@@parkerbeard6170exactly still have Overtime period and it’s not the end of the world. Do your best don’t sweat the rest is what my high school football coach used to say all the time.
had this film on vhs when I was a little kid and I used to rewind this opening scene and watch it over and over again. So epic. I miss the 90s :(
I did the same thing!
Man the music is so good!
I agree! Other than the main theme, I always enjoyed the music during the opening credits and missed penalty shot. It set a dramatic tone for why we cheer for Gordon Bombay at the end as well.
It was actually sampled from the intro to the film Grand Canyon (1991). Look it up
Finally knew that kid was in film called " first kid"
One of my childhood favourites
Never noticed mindblown

I coached peewee soccer/football and used to watch this movie. If a kid does the best they can then that's all you can ask of them.
Well said
That's very true. You want to encourage children to do and be their best. If they don't succeed, you tell them, "thank you for giving your all."
I grew up playing hockey in the 90s, so much might ducks inspiration...major nostalgia just now!
I spent hours recreating Charlie's penalty shot in my driveway in the mid 90's. First, with an old pair of Fisher Price adjustable quad skates I was way too old to be using, but I had nothing else. Then, my first pair of roller blades. It's how I learned to skate. Great memories!
Anyone else find it strange he became a successful lawyer and was still haunted by missing a penalty shot when he was 10?
It definitely showed in how he performed at his job years later. I believe he was 30-0 on court cases, and he had the license plate "Just Win" when he got pulled over by the police officer. Ducksworth told him to "score, not spike" when he played dirty in the court room. Bombay didn't understand what he meant, because he was taught to "win, win, win, win, win". Missing a shot like that would definitely haunt you when you lost your father that year as well...."Alright, Gordon. It's up to you. I don't want to see any goats here after the game, you got it? I wish your dad could be here to see this. Make him proud of you. Remember, it's not worth playing if you can't win." - Coach Jack Riley.....Then he misses the shot, which loses his team the State Pee Wee Championship for the first time in years, before and after. That is a heavy burden.
not really, honestly. these are the moments you remember for the rest of your life if you
give a shit about it to begin with
He probably had ceased to consciously associate his need to win with his hockey days. I suspect he makes the connection upon seeing Riley again.
I find it strange that he gave up hockey after peewee’s and got a chance in the minors because of how good he was in peewee
@@dereksmith7135 That may have crossed my mind a few....dozen times, but hey.
Beautiful memories of 90s life. Kids playing pee wee hockey.
Ive had moments like this in my pee wee sports career...u dont forget 😞
I remember my 1st year of Playing Pee Wee Hockey and it was my 2nd Year of Playing Travel. My team was in the Final 4 Semi Finals. We were dominating most of the game and had a two goal lead. Then late in the 3rd with under 5 minutes to go the other team rallied to score two quick goals and we went to overtime. We lost in Double Overtime which deflated us. I was silent and depressed the whole ride home, even carried on for days. Actually that pain dragged on all off season. Then the next year I had a Goal to get revenge on that team, but for some odd reason I got Cut after I worked my Tale off in Tryouts. So that was devastating to not get revenge on the team that broke our hearts the Year before. 😢
I'm sure the rest of the 1973 Hawks team put everything they had into OT after the missed penalty shot. Coach Riley appeared to rely too heavily on Bombay to win his team the state championship, which I'm sure affected the kid when he took his shot.
This intro still carries a lot of weight to this day. For any fan to the sport
Absolutely. In fact, I decided I'm going to put my Adidas Mighty Ducks 30th Anniversary Bombay '73 Hawks jersey in a wall-mounted glass case that is reversable from the front to the back.
AT LEAST HE TRIED
Coach:You're letting the whole team down.
Gordon Bombay:But I hate the team I've been carrying their lazy behinds this whole season. Screw this.
Coach:Oh.
Interesting point, and, albeit, an accurate one. In that championship game alone, assuming he scored at least one of their goals already, they wouldn't have even been tied without him.
Love the way in that moment, when the music lulled dramatically just as he rattles the top of the left post, is great screenplay
Losing a game is one thing, but to have your coach (or even mentor) condemn you, and not to at least smile at you and give you a thumbs up is even more detrimental.
Absolutely. He was the league's top scorer that season, and his missed penalty shot didn't even lose them the game. It was still tied, and the Hawks lost in overtime. Coach Riley did not handle that situation correctly.
@@rudy8146 yeah, gives us a reason to hate Coach Riley and think of him as the villain.
@@jamesreed2366 , I have to admit that most memorable villains were great actors ; )
@@rudy8146 exactly, especially Joss Ackland, who didn't play a villain in this film.
Others said it before me, but as much as we hate Coach Reilly, it's largely because actor Lane Smith did a good job with the role. Marguerite Moreau (who played Connie) said that she watched the argument scene between Reilly and Bombay and was blown away.
That actor is a billionaire now
Don’t be mean to GORDON BOMBAY
Attention! Adidas teamed up with Disney to release the 1992 Ducks Conway jersey and the 1973 Hawks Bombay jersey! This is for the 30th anniversary of the release of the original film! Both will be updated Adidas style jerseys with the original looks. As of this post (11/3/2022), I have not found an official release date. The announcement was made 2 days ago! Check out the short reveal video!
Just ordered my Bombay jersey
@@tristinjames8911 I did too! I wish they would remake the '92 Hawks jersey as well. It had awesome hawk head graphics on the shoulders and a blue hawk just above the back numbers. However, the only character they could really showcase for that is Adam Banks #9.
@@rudy8146 man I suggest checking out eBay I got the 92’ Adam banks jersey for $45 from China lol they also have the Eden hall warriors jersey, Iceland Vikings, just about all of them for cheap too. But I had to get official one these are super clean
@@tristinjames8911 Yeah, that's where I'm coming from. I've seen all the '92 Hawks look-alikes. I got a Charlie Conway jersey about 8 years ago (off Ali Express, AKA China). NHL authentic quality, just only about 80% movie accurate. As you mentioned, I would like a "clean" version of the 92' Hawks. I'm OCD about movie accurate. haha
@@tristinjames8911 , I love mine. Almost afraid to wear it. Want to put it in a class case! haha
Gordon gave it all he had. Would you say that Coach Jack Riley is a bigger jerk that Coach Jay Huffer from "The Big Green"?
Me rather than as Riley, but couch racing to his dear player hugging and then with the whole team.
Justice for juicy!
Score of that game was tied. Missing the penalty shot meant the game should have just continued haha
Correct. Bombay explains to Charlie in the diner they lost in overtime that year.
Effected him so much he went on to start a giant crypto scam
It's not worth winning if YOU CAN'T WIN BIIIIG!
The one thing I don't get about this scene is when he misses the shot, the announcer says "He hit the goalpost! What a heartbreaker! Little Gordon Bombay had the chance to WIN the game..."
If he scored, it suggests that they would have won by the odd goal. Therefore, would the score not still be level with that miss?
And the way the opposing goalie reacts after the miss suggests that there was no overtime played.
No there's actually been Q/A's that answer the question that the Hawks lost in OT and they were already tied. That Penalty would have won it in regulation; the missed Penalty was a blow to the morale of the Hawks and therefore lost in OT. This situation is similar to the 1999 NFC Championship Game with the Falcons vs the Vikings when Gary Anderson missed a 37 yd field goal in regulation with 2 mins left to make the game a 2 score lead. The viks ended up losing in OT due to moral being busted with the missed FG.
I absolutely understand where you are coming from...When I was a kid, watching the behavior of the Duluth goalie, Little Gordon, and Coach Riley after the missed penalty shot in 1972 threw me off as well. I thought the missed shot left the Hawks with one less goal, which is why they lost.
In a café scene, Coach Bombay explains his story to Charlie Conway. Both teams were tied, he gets a penalty shot, and misses after the puck hits the post. This resulted in the Hawks later losing in overtime, not regulation. He further drives the point of how different things would have been if the puck had been "a quarter of an inch" inside the post. Charlie then responds by saying, "Well, yeah. But if the puck was a quarter of an inch the other way, (he) would have missed completely".....If you really listen to the play-by-play announcer during the opening credits, before Little Bombay's penalty shot, you can listen to what's happening in the game. (I was just too impatient as a kid to watch all the credits before finally watching the opening scene, so I would always fast forward the VHS tape.)
Charlie's own penalty shot at the end of the movie symbolizes being in Little Gordon's same situation 20 years later (Movie released in 1992). Conway gets a penalty shot with both teams tied at the end of regulation. The puck hits the post again. However, this time it goes in. Therefore, it brings the "quarter of an inch" story around full circle for a glorious ending!
@@rudy8146 It's 1973 not 1972.
@@birdie3rdie Absolutely correct. Changed. Thank you!
OR, the goalie was happy because the missed penalty meant they were going into overtime, which gordon explained is what happened and the hawks lost in overtime
Can anyone tell what the goalie's jersey has on the front? Was always curious.
"Duluth" in the traditional baseball style front crest logo.
C est quoi le titre de la musique
Bad coaching game is still tied they look defeated before ot no wonder they lost.
Coach reilly was mean and a jerk, he ordered one of his players to injured adam banks in the final game.
I always wondered who was the hawks playing

South Park Stanley’s cup
The goalie looks like penny wise
I can see that. Haha
This announcer was one of the key pieces to making this movie great …then they have a dorky kid playing the announcer in D3…ruined it for me 😂
Lol
South Park
Great scene, but I totally get why South Park parodied this.
Hmm, I haven't seen that yet.
When I was a kid I used to think that goaliee was verrrwy scarrrrwy, lol. th-cam.com/video/AHmFi4YB_J4/w-d-xo.html
