I’m just confused by the premise of this situation: if he makes the penalty shot, his team wins, but if he misses, they lose? I don’t think there’s any situation in hockey where this would be the case. Maybe a chance to tie it or remain tied, but… stupid Disney.
@markkinz7913 , Bombay talks to Charlie in the cafe later on in the movie, where he states the Hawks lost in overtime...not because he missed the shot. Bombay's opening scene was a penalty shot. It was the chance to win the game...just like Charlie's at the end of the movie. If Bomay or Conway missed their penalty shots, the game would still be tied.

Interesting point, and, albeit, an accurate one. In that championship game alone, assuming he scored at least one of their goals already, they wouldn't have even been tied without him.
That is silly, nobody can get injured like that.
I'd have to disagree. You can sustain the most bizarre injury from the weakest tweak of a muscle, ligament, nerve, spine, etc.

Me rather than as Riley, but couch racing to his dear player hugging and then with the whole team.
Instead of encouraging Gordon to do his best, Reilly decided to put pressure on him and that's why Gordon missed the shot. Reilly was basically saying "If we lose, we're all gonna blame you, because it'll be your fault." Gordon was going through a tough time at this point. His father had just passed away. He was feeling lonely because of that. He needed encouragement instead of pressure. That's why later on when Charlie gets the same opportunity, Gordon encourages him to do his best. "You might make it, you might not. It's okay. Just do your best." Encouragement is what helped Charlie score the winning goal.
Reiley or however he spelled his name, was a jerk. Sure he wanted to win, but he went too far. Gordon had to find his way back to do what he loved.
That and Gordon was able to redeem himself and make atonement for a past mistake that scarred him emotionally through the team he coached.
This intro still carries a lot of weight to this day. For any fan to the sport
Absolutely. In fact, I decided I'm going to put my Adidas Mighty Ducks 30th Anniversary Bombay '73 Hawks jersey in a wall-mounted glass case that is reversable from the front to the back.
Others said it before me, but as much as we hate Coach Reilly, it's largely because actor Lane Smith did a good job with the role. Marguerite Moreau (who played Connie) said that she watched the argument scene between Reilly and Bombay and was blown away.

Yeah, you're right. There are many scenes throughout D1, D2, and D3, including ones of the players on the bench, where not wearing your helmet in normal hockey would be a penalty.
had this film on vhs when I was a little kid and I used to rewind this opening scene and watch it over and over again. So epic. I miss the 90s :(
Great scene, but I totally get why South Park parodied this.
Losing a game is one thing, but to have your coach (or even mentor) condemn you, and not to at least smile at you and give you a thumbs up is even more detrimental.

I remember my 1st year of Playing Pee Wee Hockey and it was my 2nd Year of Playing Travel. My team was in the Final 4 Semi Finals. We were dominating most of the game and had a two goal lead. Then late in the 3rd with under 5 minutes to go the other team rallied to score two quick goals and we went to overtime. We lost in Double Overtime which deflated us. I was silent and depressed the whole ride home, even carried on for days. Actually that pain dragged on all off season. Then the next year I had a Goal to get revenge on that team, but for some odd reason I got Cut after I worked my Tale off in Tryouts. So that was devastating to not get revenge on the team that broke our hearts the Year before. 😢

I remember being in the stands as an 8th grader that day. Just waiting for my time to be in the band behind my sister in the trombone section. I begged my parents to be in the band as an 8th grader, but we couldn't afford it, and getting me to a rehearsal would have been very difficult. My parents and I were in the bleachers all day, like the year before this (with The Rite of Spring). The State Finalist announcement was insane. Especially in "random order". It made for a thrilling experience.

Kudos to Director Kevin Klee. In 2023, this is still the best version of "The Rite of Spring" I've ever seen in a marching band show, beside the 2013 Blue Devils. Even then, Klee's version had a "dark" feel to it that was amazing for a high school band.

I'm sure the rest of the 1973 Hawks team put everything they had into OT after the missed penalty shot. Coach Riley appeared to rely too heavily on Bombay to win his team the state championship, which I'm sure affected the kid when he took his shot.
Bad coaching game is still tied they look defeated before ot no wonder they lost.
Score of that game was tied. Missing the penalty shot meant the game should have just continued haha
