Thank you so very much for giving that in-depth detail about frog bit. I have a beta fish that I absolutely love and adore and I just want him happy and this is one of the plants that I like to share with him. God bless.
I’m glad you found it helpful! I would love to see pictures of your betta setup, check out our facebook group, lots of people are sharing their pics and learning from others.
I love the way frogbit looks, maybe I will try them out. When I set up my first planted tank I had water lettuce and red root floaters. The water lettuce roots grew so long and lush! Now that the tank is established the roots don't grow so long. I think the new set up just had tons of nutrients in the water, and now it's not so much. I put most of the excess floating plants in my pond, and they grew massive! I had to take some of them out, because I realized they were blocking gas exchange when my giant snail nearly died. There are so many things I still need to learn.
Excellent video! Very informative and exactly what I was looking for. It’s great to see one video that actually answered all my questions directly. Thank you!
I just put some frogbit in my little aquarium and added a bigger filter in the hopes that it will help reduce the need for frequent water changes. I really appreciate all the good information you provided, especially about how the health of the plant can be an indicator/caution sign about things changing in the tank. Looking forward to looking at more of your videos. Thank you!
I use and love a lot of different floating plants, Amazon frogbit (Limnobium laeviatum), Red Root Floater (Phyllanthus fluitans), Narrow Leaf Water Sprite/Indian Fern (Ceratopteris thalictroides), Ceratophyllum demersum - coontail, hornwort, Narrow Leaf Anacharis , Salvinia minima, baby water lettuce (Pistia stratioes), Salvinia minima, Salvinia Cucullata, duckweed (small and giant), and Wolffia, a particularly tiny type of duckweed. I have soft well water low in minerals so I need to add gh booster and ferts to my water to grow all of these.
Thank you for the info. Love your setups they are so green. I started keeping planted tanks in September of 2023. Videos like this help so much. Have a happy New Year 🎉
I just got some from my LFS. I’ve killed a lot of salvinia, but the frog bit seems to be taking quite well! The roots died back and it turned quite yellow at first, but it didn’t take long (2 weeks) to start growing new runners and new roots. I like the look more than the salvinia in my own tanks.
My turtles LOOOOVE frogbit & duckweed ! Whenever it blows up/over grows in my tanks, i just scoop it & toss it in the turtle pond.. Especially if u have older turtles that need more vegetation in their diet.
Love the video. I noticed there is a hang on the back filter flowing, and yet still, you have great growth and proliferation of the frogbit. I always had poor luck with floating plants, and I always attributed it to the constant flow from my HOB.
Thanks! I made water deflectors from pieces of plastic water jug to direct the water flow downward as it comes out of the HOB which minimizes the water surface disturbance.
Amazing, it will let you know if you're feeding enough or too much! Just bought some some cups of frogbit today! Thanks so much for the tips. No plans to do a water change anytime soon!
@@plantlifeproject cheers! It's been nearly 9 months since I set the tank up, haven't done a water change yet. Fish, shrimp and snails thriving. There's even cory fry in the tank, water must be perfect I guess?
Great video. I just got aome of this stuff and its all turning yellow and rotting. I have low flow and ive started dosing easy green. Hoping for the best.
Nice video. I have noticed very similar things in my tanks using dwarf water lettuce. I found it very interesting and wonder if maybe there are more floating plants that could be used to observe tank conditions.
Good video , I can’t upload a picture.. I just noticed a hulk out frogbit with arm length roots like in the video … The other in a different tank shaded roots do not grow more then 1 inch They are about 6mth old but looks completely different..
I have this plant. It gives a beautiful look to the tank, but I noticed today that the roots have become brown, something brown like cotton.. What is the reason? Is it a good or bad thing?
Thank you for the wonderful video! Went out to buy some after watching, but it keeps getting sucked under the filter overflow and pushed under water. As a result it all died - do you know of a tidy looking way to keep it out of the overflow? I've seen a few solutions with tubing and suction cups but it doesn't look very natural.
I have used fiberglass window screen to keep mine from getting sucked under, as well as duckweed. Probably not the most natural looking either but it does the job. I also use diy plastic water diverters on the hob filters made from water bottles to divert water downwards. These are shown in one of my most recent tank tour videos, not sure which one exactly. Hope this helps.
I see that you are not using a sponge filter. Are they really not needed? I find that they are unsightly and take up a lot of tank space. So a HOB set to a low flow is all that is needed? Is this enough surface agitation for fish to breathe? Thank you. You very nice aquariums.
My sentiments exactly on sponge filters. It really doesn’t matter what kind of filter you use. If the tank has low bio load, plants and is well established with beneficial bacteria, you don’t necessarily even need a filter. I have several tanks and even a pond with goldfish that have no filter at all. But they are well balanced and setup in a way where they don’t need it. I’m starting to not like HOBs as much because they take up rim space (which can be used for more plants!), but they work just fine. Surface agitation is not necessarily needed if the tank conditions are as described above, the key I think is not have the surface completely covered like with floating plants which allows for gas exchange, and remember that in addition to gas exchange at the water surface the aquarium plants are also producing oxygen with enough light. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Does fine with other fish in a tank this size. He does chase the black skirt tetras around during feeding time, but other than that he doesn’t make trouble.
Do you have any tips for keeping redroot floaters alive? I had five, then all of them died expect for one. So I moved the last one into a Father Fish Resurrection jar under a house plant grow light.

It’s great that you’re dosing easy green. Hopefully, the frogbit will rebound with the additional nutrients.

very nice, i was thinking of getting some to my nano tank. but the problem is that i don't have strong light, could it stay healthy in such tank?
It grows best with medium to high light. What kind of light do you have?
Can the long roots going down be trimmed??
Yes, but you can also take out the older plants with longer roots and leave the baby plants with short roots

yes you need a license to buy this in Canberra where I am. Very invasive.
Not to keep it or buy it though , the permit is just to sell it
Hi 👋 what’s the best fertiliser for your plants 😊
Here’s the primary way I fertilize

I Also use Aquarium co op easy green
Can frogbit be used in an outdoor 85 gallon pond like water hynicinth?
Yes I grow mine in ponds also during summer , but it doesn’t like cold weather so it will start fading in the fall.
Would a tank completely covered with Frogbit prevent fish from jumping out of the tank? (keeping it uncovered)
It would certainly discourage fish from jumping, not sure it would prevent them from jumping completely though
How does your red tail shark do with other fish
Does fine with other fish in a tank this size. He does chase the black skirt tetras around during feeding time, but other than that he doesn’t make trouble.
@@plantlifeprojectmine was ok until he grew bigger than the rest then he wouldn't leave any of them alone
Do you have any tips for keeping redroot floaters alive? I had five, then all of them died expect for one. So I moved the last one into a Father Fish Resurrection jar under a house plant grow light.
Red root floaters need lots of nutrients in the water. That’s what I’m experiencing.
@@plantlifeproject thank you so much. I bet this was my problem.
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart

My Mystery snails ate the Frogbit I put in within days.
Bummer!
These are great for reducing algae. Annoyingly though, tetras eat the roots.
What kind of tetras do you have?
Diamond tetras
I eat this plant and, . Duck. Weed. Plants, rich in B - 12 Energy. Vitamin
🙏😎
My Amazon frog-bit plants are even more healthier than yours... And more greenish coloured too
I'm proud of that ✊
My frogbit has stripes on it like a tiger
It may need to be fertilized, lack of iron and/or nitrogen can cause a “striped” appearance and pale green color
