I've been growing frogbit in my 5 gallon for about a year, and if you let them grow roots all the way down into some root tabs they will start growing MASSIVE leaves. I've even got a bloom! The roots are so strong that they support the plant during water changes. Pretty neat. If you want to do this, beware that they will take over your tank if you let them.

I guess the in thing are LED lights, but prior to switching, I had a double T-5 florescents and I couldn't stop these floating plants(duck weeds, water sprites, mini water lettuce) from growing and their roots reaching out to the gravel. Love your enthusiasm. Keep up the good work and video making.

I bought three plants at my LFS and as of six months later, I have literally hundreds of them. I have sold some, given some away, but mostly I throw a lot out. My plants grow to about 4 or 5 inches in diameter and I love the roots. Your airline idea is brilliant! Something else I found was that yes it makes great hiding space for Fry but to add to that, if you use a powder Fry food, the fine bristles on the roots especially higher up, holds food from falling and the Fry can graze in relative safety.
This stuff soaks up Nitrogen like a starving person at a buffet!
I hate throwing plants away, I really do, but this is such an amazing plant I just steel myself to doing so. Has anyone had it flower? I haven't yet.

I just changed out some ( floating)water wisteria that I consistently trim off the planted mother plant in my 45 gallon glass topped community tank, ( that also grows so well as a floater ) to frog bit. I used the circular airline tube in a quiet corner, and the roots are coming along great. They look like some type of ‘war of the worlds’ alien invasion. The dwarf gourami loves hiding and resting out under it. You answered all my questions, especially how to water change with it. Thanks,!!!

I love this stuff, I bought it on Amazon along with water spangles. Both of them survived shipping to ARIZONA, it was like 100 degrees that day too. I put them in the tank then left on a trip for just 4 days, it had already started multiplying by that time and one of the roots was about 8 inches long. Long story short, this stuff and water spangles are basically invincible and grow really fast. I’m just using liquid fertilizer right now, the one by API.

Honestly you've got really great videos and they're super helpful. I tried using frogs bit and it pretty much died I realize that my light probably isn't strong enough for surface plants. My betta seem happy with their water dry caves and their anubias that's planted on top of it they seem to enjoy the larger environment for swimming.
I really do wish I could create my tanks the way I see and your videos but truly I don't have the money and we just don't have the proper resources, for example I wish they sold the coop fertilizer in Taiwan died by in a heartbeat.
The fertilizer that I have they instructed me in Chinese to give for drops every time I do a water change but it doesn't keep my anubias from turning yellow or getting odd colorations of brown and black.
I found after I stopped using the plant food they seem to do better on their own. The Leafs get larger and sometimes off just clip off the ones that change color but as long as they say kind of small they seem to stay green and healthy.
In fact I have a couple tanks were the anubias is just floating and my bettas seemed to enjoy resting up against it or resting in the leaves depending on how big it is but they seem comfortable.
I guess you can say my tanks are sort of homemade with the resources that are available. For example we don't actually have lids that go on our glass aquariums.
so I had to purchase large Critter keeper Lids to place on top of the tank. Another thing I'd like to do if I ever have time it's to paint the backdrops of my tanks so that way my tanks don't have stuff looking through it from behind?
I saw this tip on a really cool website called the fish room with Rachel O'Leary and I thought it was a really cool idea.
If you were to take a look at my room it consists of basically two tanks on my dressers that are made of plastic. three tanks on my desk which of course has a waterproof tablecloth on it and then I have a fish tank on my Ikea table of us to hold my DVD player and some other stuff.
I have a large pink and white plastic box I have a couple of them and I put a beautiful tablecloth on it and that's where my other tank sits and my frog tank.
I basically live in a room so the fact that I could even get a fish into this room is well a miracle of Jesus. to be honest when I first got into the hobby I never thought I'd have so many but they're actually kind of Addicting betta fish they're so beautiful.
if you have an email I'd love to send you a picture of what my room looks like after I clear off some of the tables although I didn't decorate three of the tables where my betta has stuff to look at so that's actually good for them.
actually now that I think about it probably my room is already set up pretty well and I don't actually need to paint the back of the fish tanks.
please forgive me I know my messages are long I don't have any friends that are in the bettas so there's no one to talk to about different things. it might be kind of funny but I actually share that with God about different tank ideas.
what I'd love to do is open a fish store where people could come and create their own tanks.
but you got to have a lot of capital to do that and this I don't have yet but maybe someday

Sadly we don't have the coop fertilizer that you use but we do have the other one that you mentioned. I'm thinking about buying that one and switching my gravel to aquarium soil. They finally had a large bag.
When I started the beta hobby the pet store told me that grapple would be just fine for plants but I found the only thing that can survive pretty well is anubias of any kind but in Taiwan we only have two types large and Nano.
I bought three beautiful lily pads yesterday and I do have an LED light for them I think my betta likes them I set her Driftwood and anubias on top of the terracotta water jar but she has she likes to swim at in and out of that and sleep in it

Great video. I currently have duckweed in my tanks for nitrate control along with pothos until I can source frogbit.
I wanted to say that your article on the effects of floating plants and various types of filtration on O2 levels in tanks (Aquarium CoOps blog) was excellent. It would be interesting to know what percentage of floating plants on the surface of a tank is optimal for nitrate control (all other factors being equal) before O2 levels start to fall. I get nervous if more than 50% of the surface is covered. After reading your article I added a HOB filter back on one tank that currently only has a sponge filter and a lot of floating plants. Great job.

Oh my goodness, I'm so happy to hear that you read the Aquarium Co-Op blog and I can't believe you noticed I was the author! Yes, I would love to know in the future how much floating plants affect the O2 levels. Would make for a great follow-up experiment. :)

But what do you do with the frogbite when it gets out of control (too much)

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you so much! So, a few options are a) spread it to another tank, b) sell it or give it away locally, c) make fish/snail food out of it, and d) tie it up in a bag and throw it away.

I’ve been basically binging all your videos learning about everything!! Love your content.
I was wondering though, I have this same betta tank you were showing with the all glass lid, the filter seems to put out a pretty strong water flow in mine but doesn’t look like your surface is moving at all. Did you turn it off? I’m putting some floating plants in my tank and am concerned it will be too strong of a flow for them and my betta.

Gonna get some frogbit for a horticulture project I'm working on. Going to get some waterwheel plants which need companion plants to survive in horticulture.

i made a ring for my floating plants as well but i didn't think about detaching the suction cup for water changes. i would always just remove all my plant. thanks for sharing!

I've been looking for some for quite awhile. I like the look of Frogbit much more than water lettuce. I think I have found a way to get rid of my duckweed easily but want to get a replacement floating plant. I don't want to use water sprite as I prefer it planted in substrate rather than floating. I am still trying to successfully grow mosquito fern but haven't had much luck. Also, Foo the Flowerhorn channel uses the airline tube to keep the floaters out and not in like you are using. either way works. One question. Is the light you have success with Frogbit a full spectrum white/blue/red led or just white/blue? Notice any difference with lights without the red LEDs?

This is a plant that has paid for itself 100 times over, for me. It is very hard to get floating plants in my area and I scored a couple little pots of this. It flourishes in all of my tanks and I can sell off portions regularly.

Your frogbit looks a lot rounder than the amazon frogbit I have seen for sale. Where did you get it and was there any specific indicator of a specific strain or something?

Nice informative video ❤️ Could you please tell me why my frogbits have trouble with growing roots? In my betta fish tank, i have quite good light but roots aren’t growing and even frogbit leaves have holes and become browny. Please suggest anything 🙏

How do you recommend disinfecting frogbit before adding it to the tank? I recently bought some from somebody on Etsy. I’ll be quarantining it in a bucket but I’d like to disinfect/sterilize them too!
