I think Americans overreacted to the Zebra Mussel scare. People who had Marimo balls in their tank for years were taking them out and pretty much taking a flamethrower to them. C'mon, if you've already had them for years there aren't any mussels on them. Besides that, the US is already infested with them. I live in the Great Lakes region which is already infested. If you buy any kind of aquatic plant in the US it could theoretically have zebra mussels in them, but we don't go crazy and kill all our aquatic plants. You can still buy them. I did. If you're really paranoid about it you could keep them in a quarantine tank for awhile. If you're that paranoid you should already be doing that with everything you put in your tank. You could also treat your plants with No Planaria or some other medicine that kills snails.
i was gonna say too that he sounded really ridiculous throwing out his moss balls. Zebra muscles are already infesting the US, i personally live on lake erie and the beaches don’t even have sand, its all just zebra muscle shells. The infestation is horrible and insane, but moss balls definitely weren’t gonna tip the scales, it’s already as bad as it gets 😂
@@oscrates Same where I live by lake Michigan. The beaches are now made of zebra mussel shells. Wouldn't make a bit of difference if I had one in my tank. In fact, I think that would be kinda cool, though I doubt they'd live long in a fish tank. I’m so tired of trying and loosing plants. I’ve spent hundreds in all types of setups. I’ve done everything I can. I even have perfect well water with excellent readings. I’ve tried other waters too. I’ve tried dirted and sand. I’ve tried substrate and sand. I’ve gotten all the fertilizers needed. All I get is melted plants. I truly believe some people have the right energy for specific things to happen. I am an orchid specialist owning over 1K orchids. Experts are amazed on how I keep them. Others try to do as I do and they have no luck. I guess I’ll just stick to breeding guppies.
I'm surprised that someone so adept at Orchids has problem with planted aquaria. I would think that you have the mindset to grow aquatic plants, considering that Orchids are grown on a sparse care interval. Largely when someone is having problems with their new planted tank it's because they get impatient with the nitrogen cycle. Actually letting the tank just be for a few weeks to establish some micro organisms ( keep the fertilizers to a minimum...) Gentle neglect is actually better when you just want to get some plants to initially survive. Start with simple low light plants that don't need substrate, you can use gravel, but it should not be something like Aquasoil as your first tank. something more inert and maybe a very little amount of crushed Dolomite or coral sand to add some light mineralization, Ca and Mg for the plants, also helps establish a viable bacteria and microfaune culture.
Whaaaat?! I just stumbled on this channel looking for some info and just assumed Aquapros was in Jersey or something (from what I've seen, dudes in New Jersey are really into aquariums). I was super surprised when some the video was made at one of my local, and favorite shops 🤯. What up, Pisces Aquaria?!! Whiteaker in the 541!! I'm new to the hobby and these guys have been the absolute best.
Rotalla blood red keeps its color in low-tech, Lobelia cardinalis mini will work too. Pearl weed, Hygrophila ‘blue’ salcifolia, & Pogostemon stellata look good in low-tech. In C.A. marimos are available only in 1 in. diameter. Oh, don't forget Ludwigias & Echinodorus. I use hygger LEDs and 18W fluorescent bulbs.
How to kill duck weed? Lots of flow at the top of your tank, It looks like the plant doesn't like to be in constant movement. Also, if it gets wet on top of it, it turns brown and melt away. How do I know? I have a L 20gallon tank where I haven't been able to grow Duck Weed at all .
Does Andrew or his shop have a social media presence? If not, they should. Or you should do more co-pros with him, as he seems to be super knowledgeable about a lot of plants, etc.
Java fern is a strange one. Some of the new strains seem to need strong light and co2. If it does die off I find that the new plants at the end of the dead leaves do pretty well.
The plant holding system is essentially growing them as emersed plants, so they'll look great in the display, but when the customer gets them home just watch out for that epic melt. I for one have been burnt by one too many emersed plant purchases, that's why I will only buy submerged plants or sometimes tissue culture plants now.
I had guppy grass and it disintegrated with a couple of days. Hornweed grows like mad, you start with one stem and with in a month you have a tank full, it's crazy stuff! Duckweed grows like crazy too, both are good for selling for a bit of petty cash, they grow like wildfire. Duckweed is also good because it helps kill of algae as it blocks a lot of light out when covering the top. Anubias I find just melt and die off after a few weeks but leave it alone and new leaves grow. Bucephalandra is amazing too but slow growing which is no bad thing. Crypts are good but you have to keep feeding root tabs which gets expensive.
I’d like to see a video about how to get all of the planting medium off of new plants. It may seem easy for some people but it drives me crazy. There has to be an easier way.
I'm waiting for my rotala to establish better. The stems are growing like crazy, but most of the emersed leaves have fallen off, and the underwater leaves haven't grown in yet. My bacopa carolina though! It's thriving. It's growing like crazy, has it's water leaves, and is just doing so well, My crypts are doing super well too.
so I just woke up right, prepare a cup of coffee and saw this title, I spat out my coffee like a malfunctioning espresso machine all over my poor, unsuspecting monitor.
I've had good success with Pennywort (I have a lot of ambient light as my tanks are in a greenhouse - so keep that in mind) - it has literally taken over tanks, though the trimming is easy and can be infrequent if you don't mind a bit of time with some overgrowth. Also had good luck with both Frogbit and Salvinia. But I also have hard water - so I don't know if they are really in the bulletproof categorey.
Some anubias, not all, are really bomb proof, these are the anubias nana and nana petite, anubias minima and barteri. I had other ones but some withered away, like anubias hastifilia and gracilis. Because they grow slowly their leaves can sometimes get dirly and with some algae but my shrimp clean up crew cleans them in 24 hours. I take the rock with the anubias out of my big tank and put them a day in my shrimp tank and they are looking as bought yesterday from the shop…Then I put them back.
I bought some Water Lettuce from a LFS; now it regularly takes over my 150G. So much so that I actively sell it on FB Marketplace and trade the same LFS for fish, food, etc.
Anubias, Crypt, Java Moss are the true Bulletproof. And if we are talking about easy plant, i will include, HM, Dwarf Sagittaria, Buce, Hygrophila Polysperma and Amazon Sword with my 3 bulletproof plants.

You know what is so weird? I have been aquascaping since 2019 and always have done high tech. I have 7 rimless aquariums (UNS and Waterbox) and I have high tech lights from onf, chihiros, twinstar, and fluval. I can grow every plant no problem and I go heavy on the co2, my water is great very low tds and pretty soft from the tap and the one thing that never has done well for me is bucephelandra. No matter what species I try it always melts away and doesnt come back. I've probably tried over 5 times over the last 5 years with many different varieties. So now I just grow them emersed in my terrariums and wabi kusa. I did have one last quite a long time, and then I took the scape down and put it in my bin. I can grow hc cuba like no other, monte carlo, elecharis belem, parvula, pusilla. Rotala hra, rotundofolia, mini pelia, pinnatifida, about 6 variants of java fern, crypts up the wazoo etc etc. yet one of the easiest plants just never acclimates to my water for some reason. Im ok just growing it in my emersed setups. I have been growing the same plamts for years on end. the same plantback and forth from submerged to emersed to tubs to wabi kusa to terrarium, still going strong. lol buce is my bane, but its so pretty. maybe i should give it another try with a new variety. Good news is buce looks just as pretty emersed as submerged.I wonder if it is something in my tap water that buce hates because I use RODI for my emersed plants.
Im new and my Anubias ( have 4) mostly covered in black spots and algae. I clean them off every 10 days or so but lately they dont look to well. I almost want to give up on them and try some buce..
@Aquapros: Buce is almost all wild collected and is actually now endangered due to it's popularity in aquascaping and the fact that it only grows in a small region. Please don't 'push' it on your show. Cory (aquarium co-op) will only sell aquacultured buce for that reason and he has a very hard time finding any.
@@piscesaquaria906 That's so good to hear but more should be said about it, please take the time to mention the issue every time you show it or recomend it.
@@letsgonow5641 You absolutely have no idea what you are talking about, I have watched almost every video Cory has made (you clearly have not) and he has been very up front about his entire painstaking processes from start to finnish with all of his products. Cory has talked about why he unfortunately has his products made in China and also that as soon as he/anyone submits a well thought out plan to the fabricators his and everyone elses ideas and plans are immediately pirated and sold on Amazon, Ally Express, Temu and other sites and not with the same quality inside components but they look the same on the outside. This is a known big problem with doing business with China for all of our buisnesses and industries, including our tech industries. Point is, get your facts straight about who is ripping off whom. I had the problem with melting Anubias after raising the temperature to 86f to fight ick, I was wondering what caused it because even Anubias that I bought after lowering the temperature kept melting.
Forget the toilet, 2 of my anubias nana grow in an orchid pot and in a snail enclosure in a coconut shell with soil and moss, being watered every now and then, with the rhizome out of water.
The problem is definitely me then. I killed my guppy grass and a bunch of other plants, the only one that remained and is beautiful is the Amazon sword… I've already spent a lot of money on plants and they keep dying (and not coming back) 😩
No matter how hard I try, I manage kill almost every plant I put in the aquarium, including Anubias. The only two that I can consistently keep alive are Java Moss and Java Fern. And lately Buce have been doing good. I'm also really good at keeping algae alive.
@@owlofmischief2154 so your Java Moss dies too? You might try moss balls and Mini Pellia if you can find it. Some people also grow houseplants with the roots in the aquarium (eg, pothos, lucky bamboo)
That's the thing, literally nothing works. I tried pothos with it's roots in the water and the leaves in the aquarium light and the light of the window next to the aquarium, but it died. Meanwhile my mother has a pothos plant in a bottle with the exact same tap water I used for the aquarium (we used well water so no chlorine) and it's absolutely thriving. At the same time, whenever I take my plants out of the aquarium and place them in some random glass jar next to the window, they grow. I thought maybe it's an issue with the light so I bought a super bright light. Nope. My plants still grow anywhere except my aquarium.
I doubt I'll be able to find moss balls or mini pellia in my country, I already tried and failed to find moss balls, but I can give searching another try.
Minus the duckweed I want to buy the others for my new fish tank. I don’t know much about those plants, I only bought them because they’re pretty but those plants are very tough so far (a month in). I bought Java Moss and glued them to my lava rocks and they all turned white and died after a few days. I’m guessing the glue(?)
I just lost three Anubias alfazeli (sp?) in a new scape. Melted away. Praying it recovers because the rhizomes still look kinda good but the leaves are just pretty much gone now
i've had trouble with annubias rot. Do you think a blue dip would work when tying them on after purchase to maybe stop the fungal/bacterial growth that causes it?
Good question, i know other people who have tried all that and more with not 100% answers... its almost like its a genetic trait of the plant like a weird defense mechanism... thats me totally guessing with no evidence tho 🤪🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️

Gentle neglect is actually better when you just want to get some plants to initially survive.
Nice overview of easy to grow plants. I think I'll give guppy grass a shot for raising up some baby ranchus in a grow out tank.
I was born and raised in Jersey, but I escaped to Pennsylvania 30 years ago. Yep, I am into aquariums!😊
When I have too much duck weed, I just toss it into my goldfish tank and they destroy it.
My goldfish love snacking on duckweed
😂
Absolutely correct!! Duckweed will not grow in high flow tanks. I’ve tried as well. Zero luck. It just disappears!!!😮
Cool video really felt like just hanging out at the shop for the second half
Cabomba is a good, hearty one. I have extremely hard water and i have this growing in my stock tank pond and it is loving it!!
Does Andrew or his shop have a social media presence? If not, they should. Or you should do more co-pros with him, as he seems to be super knowledgeable about a lot of plants, etc.
Amazon swords- they just grow & grow for me. I use River pebbles as substrate. My swords put out 6 babies for me & flowered ❤
I'm slowly learning what plants suit my tanks, I like to keep things simple
We only had one bathroom growing up. I can relate to the bucket. Lol. 😂 If it was occupied, you'd grab a bucket and go to the wood shed.
Water wisteria should be on this list.
Im amazed by how fast guppy grass grows. Its not the prettiest to look at but its great for breading tanks.
so I just woke up right, prepare a cup of coffee and saw this title, I spat out my coffee like a malfunctioning espresso machine all over my poor, unsuspecting monitor.
We need to see your pet rabbit!!!!!! 🐇
Subwassertang does well for me and is good for fry. Val grows like a weed in a pot with 3-4" of gravel with root tabs.
I've gotten snail infestations from moss balls I've bought on Amazon, but they were a snack for my pleco. He ignored algae tabs, loved the escargot.
That is why I always go with tissue culture plants.
I bought some Water Lettuce from a LFS; now it regularly takes over my 150G. So much so that I actively sell it on FB Marketplace and trade the same LFS for fish, food, etc.
If you agitate the surface water enough with an air stone, for example, you can make the duckweed disappear. it wants still water to thrive.
Anubias, Crypt, Java Moss are the true Bulletproof. And if we are talking about easy plant, i will include, HM, Dwarf Sagittaria, Buce, Hygrophila Polysperma and Amazon Sword with my 3 bulletproof plants.
I found some of these in my local pond and sewers 😅
What are you using for lighting devices?
Java fern is the only plant I've tried and tried multiple times but can not get it to grow.
Java ferns! One little leaf could break off and take root somewhere. It’s pretty damn resilient.
18:15 i can confirm: that one can't be killed xD
we love our toilet plants!
I miss marimo moss balls so much, they are illegal in canada since quite a few years now 😭
Same. Also in Canada. I miss Marimo too!!
They are? I found it sold on kijiji. Shhhhh lol
@@sevantorus5545 definitely illegal. Lots sell Java moss shaped in a ball and try to pass it off as marimo though. That said, I’m sure you could find a private sale - just not a business selling them
@@sevantorus5545 but are they actually marimo? There are plenty selling Java moss or Christmas moss tied into a ball shape.
I have a 200 litre tank full of bucephalandra I stuck it to all my wood and dragon stone it's been growing in there 4 years now and I literally don't touch it best plant ever
I had a big piece of my anubis rysom rot. the entire thing became brown and started losing leafs but it managed to recover and started growning in all directions.
Can I buy Buce from Andrew? And would love to find out more about mosses from Ashley. I have two big ole black moors & their baby boy who’s not so baby anymore so plants are a challenge in my 50 gallon
wow, i have never heard about Bucephalandra before but its stunning :O
Never had success with keeping java fern or java moss alive despite how everyone swears they're easy, but I've found crypts to basically be indestructible for me. Maybe they like the water here, but I've never had any issues with them besides a little initial melt. And guppy grass too.
some good information here , thanks
Ive had anubias rot come in on anubias ive ordered before and its crazy contagious and devasted a ton of mine one by one thank god i think im finally past it i think. But i love anubias in general and keep a ton of it.
I feel like salvinia needs a lot of light, outside in my pond that gets full sun, it outgrows the duckweed, but in the shaded pond it died off.
Too legit to quit! Random video thought or not, I liked 👍
Heck yaaaa brother 😎😎😎
Just bought a moss ball in Minneapolis today. Wife bought some cages for them from Teemu so goldfish can only eat so much.
I've just had anubias flower over the past couple weeks
dwarf sag and microsword survived subzero winter in a covered and drained patio pond for me.
My Vallisneria hasn't grown for two months, only small shoots and I've also fertilized it, but the Sessiflora grows like a rocket, I don't understand what the problem is
You know what is so weird?
I've killed anubius, duck weed, rotala, but bacopa and pearl weed are going gangbusters. I guess it depends on the tank set up.
Im new and my Anubias ( have 4) mostly covered in black spots and algae. I clean them off every 10 days or so but lately they dont look to well. I almost want to give up on them and try some buce..
@@letsgonow5641 Maybe it's the light levels?
@@joyg2526 the last time i clean the algae off with a qtip thats when it got worse. I did get some new lights just this week. im hoping that helps.
@Aquapros: Buce is almost all wild collected and is actually now endangered due to it's popularity in aquascaping and the fact that it only grows in a small region. Please don't 'push' it on your show. Cory (aquarium co-op) will only sell aquacultured buce for that reason and he has a very hard time finding any.
the buce we sell is farm raised!
@@piscesaquaria906 That's so good to hear but more should be said about it, please take the time to mention the issue every time you show it or recomend it.
He also sells rebranded Chinese stuff at a higher price...
BTW, I only mentioned Cory's stance on Buce to Mike because I know he and Cory are friends and I thought maybe they could talk about it.
Duckweed occasionally shows up in my pond, but my goldfish in there eat it.
That plant case is cool, a great fish store here in Overland Park, KS called Picasso aquatics has this, I bought a new plant yesterday
I killed those too 😭 my fish are thriving but I can just never keep any plants
I forget what restaurant it was, but a local place had moss balls in mason jars as table decorations
How did you get your Trees like that? I tried it on my bonsai tree, doing everyday CO2 inside. But it doesnt seem to grow, and mostly seems die off
Pogostemon Stellatus Octopus, grows like crazy and impossible to kill.
Minus the duckweed I want to buy the others for my new fish tank.
I bought Cabomba caroliniana and my goldfish ripped (leaves, stems ?) off of them and would always pull them up and I just kept re-planting them and those plants are still alive.
Praying it recovers because the rhizomes still look kinda good but the leaves are just pretty much gone now
I am here focusing on the background tank.😂
i've had trouble with annubias rot.
@@AQUAPROS i went ahead and dipped a current piece i have in my tank that I lost half of to rot, see if it saves the other half.
Duckweed and salvinia-if my fancy goldfish eat the roots will that kill them, or will they keep putting out more roots?
currently have a tank with jungle val and duck weed battling each other for light lol
Love duckweed won't survive in my water unfortunately only plant i haven't had success with so far.
My first attempt with plants are rotala green tissue culture. And it's not doing well. Might be dead.
