I just want Fuji to release an updated 18mm f/2. I hate the 16mm f/2.8 and the 18mm f/1.4 is absolutely massive so it ruins the shooting experience with the XPro3. If I’m going to shoot big, heavy lenses, I’m going to shoot full frame.
This
I would love a reworked 18mm prime lens that’s not too big. I think for travelling and street photography a 18 as well as a 35mm would be my dream combo. Currently I mostly just use my 23 :-)
What do you hate about the 16 2.8? I’m trying to find a compact and wide angle for my xs20 and this is one I’ve been looking up. Love my 13 1.4, but was hoping for something even smaller.
@@erin.v.z It's not a 'bad' lens, per se. At least not in the sense that it does anything wrong. And it fits the part for being a compact, weather-resistant, affordable prime lens for the Fuji system. But (in 35mm equivalents) 24mm is an odd focal length for me. I started photography with a 28/50/85 kit, and later went to a 35/135 kit for 99% of my stuff, adding a 28mm back in later as I really like that field of view. I actually shot exclusively with 28mm for about 2 years. So for me, 24mm just feels really wide. It's harder for me to get a sort of 'environmental' shot with the 24 than it is with the 28 because I feel like the 24 distorts a little too much and makes it a little harder to control what's in the frame. A step forward or back fixes this in most instances, but I think the 28mm FOV is exactly right for me so the 24mm FOV never sticks in my kit.
+1 .They should be able to improve image quality + WR. We are with Fuji for small lenses, they should focus on this.
you mentioned the 16-80 f4. I really wish they would give it a minor upgrade with a barrel lock and an aperture lock. gravity naturally elongates the lens while walking so I constantly have to twist it back into place. it's also very easy to move the aperture ring
Hm you might suffer from a bad copy then. I have the 16-80 as well and have not experienced lens creep. The aperture ring on my copy also has a good bit of resistance.
interesting. I did buy it used from KEH. so you don't experience any lens creep when walking around? @@lukasbenjamin_
Also the autofocus while zooming in
but even still. wouldn't you like the peace of mind knowing that no matter how long you have the lens for, it won't ever creep if they added a lock. such a simple upgrade that no one will complain about@@lukasbenjamin_
Aperture Ring is really not gonna change itself unless you are really really really rough with your equipment, at least for my 16-80 f4. however the zoom telescopes out easily when the lens is pointing down due to gravity. for my lens it is very easy and it happens everytime it is pointed down now after a few years of use
Really hope you're right about the telephoto prime for the X-Mount system. The 70-300 and a 400mm F4 will be an awesome combination for sports/action/wildlife. Only concern is the price being really expensive:/. If so, Fringer have brought out new weather sealed versions of their adapters for Nikon and Canon lenses to be used on a Fuji body. Therefore, I'll look into a used under €1500 Nikon 500 F5.6 PF.
Oh that would certainly be a really cool alternative. I can’t really pinpoint where the price for such lens would be. I would assume slightly under the great white 200mm f2. But that would still be mighty expensive!
@@lukasbenjamin_ yeah slightly less than 200 F2 is what I would guess too. Even though a native telephoto prime would be nice, I think one of the Nikon PF lenses will be a far cheaper option as well as being lightweight. Judging by forums I've researched, they seem to work well with the "Fringer Pro" adapter.
@@nomadictimbo9185 I started looking into the Nikon 500 f/5.6 PF with fringer adapter recently. I am looking into updade from my old XF 100-400, but would like to go for a prime lens. Fuji has to come with 400mm f/4 or 500 / 600 f/5.6 - 6.3 that would be around 1.5 kilograms and cost between 3 - 4 000 €. If they come with something bigger and pricier, it would make much more sense to go with Nikon... You can switch for 400mm f/4.5 + 1.4 tele for 4 000 € and it weights less then 1.5 kilo so a pretty small setup...
Fuji is always pretty good on price thankfully
I would love to see a new 16-55 2.8 (internal zoom) and a new 40-150 2.8.
They’re both about 9 years old now, I could imagine them planning for an update of those lenses in the near future. Though I’m not sure what they could change, that would warrant a 2.0 version. Maybe ois on the 16-55?
@@lukasbenjamin_ yes, OIS would be a welcome addition. OIS on my X-H2 is great. But in combination with a new 16-55 it would be awesome.
@MichelMayerle certainly yes! I’m not sure what they would do for the 50-140 though :-/
@@lukasbenjamin_ I don’t really like the rather harsh bokeh of the 40-150 that it produces under certain circumstances. It is a solid lens. But I think Fujifilm can do better. But I understand that this lens will not be renewed anytime soon.
I think if at all, they would just bring out a 50-140 mk. II with slightly improved features, like the mentioned bokeh.
I cannot carry heavy lens (including even Fujifilm) any longer which is why I changed to the X-system a few years ago.
What would you recommend for an XT-5?
I’ve heard good things about the Tamron 18-300mm lens. Ofc the image quality won’t be as good as some of fujis native lenses, but it’s apparently very decent.
I myself use the 16-80 and 70-300 from Fujifilm. Also a great combo that doesn’t weigh that much.
Camera assistant.
The loss of OIS is a big deal, but I'm hoping it might signal that Fuji will be equipping more (or let's hope all) of their future cameras with IBIS.
I have the same train of thought. They already have it on the top of the line cameras, seems logical for them to extend it to the mid line as well. Though at that point there’s less of a difference between cameras and maybe less incentive to buy the more expensive ones.
They won't extend to the cheaper models. It's one od the main things that separates the models. They are trying to make a profit so..
@@gregorybeale they haven’t for all of them so far and yes I agree I’m sure it’s to boost the sales of the top of the line cameras, but they did add it on the xs20, so let’s see if it’ll be added on a potential xt40 and xe5
No OIS is quite a disappointment. It seems Fuji has 'rebooted' themselves with the release of the X-T4 and specifically the inclusion of IBIS. It makes the already great X-T3 a bit less versatile with these newer lenses. The answer is probably to just 'upgrade'.
To be fair, a lot of the other lenses do have ois. But I think they’re updating most cameras to include ibis rn.
@@lukasbenjamin_ It is fair..I'm just grumpy my X-T3 doesn't have IBIS. I rely on lenses having OIS for any steady video. It might be time to upgrade to an X-T4 or the likes.
I get it, what do you shoot mostly? I think for most of my usecases, the IBIS on my XT4 is nice to have, but not necessary. I dont shoot by night that much.@@shanemitchellspencer
I'm just a hobbyist who takes videos of my kids. That's where the IBIS would help some. @@lukasbenjamin_
Fuji please make small lenses. The pros sides of apsc. Make a new 18mm f2 too
I’d love that!
should I buy the xt5 w/ 18-55mm or wait for the new lens?
Depending if you need weather resistance or not. I’d prefer having the lens with WR, since the xt5 has it too.
I hope they introduce lenses that don't suffer from exposure steps when zooming in and out.
Oh what you mean by that? Lenses without static aperture or something else?
@@lukasbenjamin_ the fuji cameras automatically steps up or down the exposure when it reaches a certain focal length as you zoom in and out the lens. It’s a weird thing it does by itself.
@@oranjeegreen8388 I think you mean the variable aperture lenses huh?
@@lukasbenjamin_ As far as i know it happens even with the 16-55 f2.8, the sigma zoom f2.8, tamron f2.8.
@@tekniqs something I gotta pay attention to, I’ve never seen or rather realised it happening on my zoom lenses
Nice video, but I think its high time for fuji to stop making variable aperture lens, in fact many camera manufacturers like Canon, Nikon, Sony & lens manufacturers like Tamron (28-105 f/4 would have better than 28-200 f/2.8-5.6) should stop making variable aperture standard zoom. These things aren't cheap they aren't worth for that high price. People buy APS-C or FF for better quality, having varible aperture kit lens hinder these in certain situations. Fuji should have design an better XF 16-70 f/4 & 70-270 f/4, also lighter 8-1 f/4. one of the reviewer showcased how Tamron 70-180 f/2.8 was sharper than Fuji's own XF 50-140 f/2.8 & its not cheap
Thanks first of all, Im not a fan of variable aperture zooms either. I like my 16-80 f4 and don’t specifically need a lower aperture on it, I’d rather use prime lenses for low aperture.
Sigma 1850 f2.8 is still the greatest kit lens for Fujifilm system IMO
I’ve heard a lot of good about this lens yea
My hope is that fuji makes the same tilting screen from the xt5 on the xt40 in the future. I love the small compactness of my xt30 but not the tilting screen.
Let’s see what Fuji does there. I assume they’ll release this camera at the end of 2024.
All nice lenses. Cant wait for the new x100vi
A 400mm F4 at a reasonable price is exactly what I think they should make. Hopefully they do make it, but the price is going to be crucial. 3000 dollars may be attracting enough for a lot of people, me included
It would sway a lot of people thinking of wildlife and sports photography towards Fujifilm I think.
@@lukasbenjamin_ it would at least keep them from going somewhere else.
Removed OIS? Hopefully this lens is much sharper than it's predecessor, I had two bad samples I got rid of and got better results with the 16-80 f4. Hopefully it is cheaper. The current Sigma offering for 18-50 is arguably a better lens and constant f2.8.
I use the 16-80 as well and it’s amazing in my opinion. And that’s now a 5 year old lens, so I’d assume the IQ would have improved in that time. I’ve heard a lot about bad samples of the 18-55, but I also heard a lot of positives.
that's strange, my old japanese 18-55 is very sharp.
@@___15 You now, that could be it. I've heard that the Japan manufactured lens are sharper than the Philippines manufactured lenses which is what I had.
@@mr.b4444 i've heard that Philippines 18-55 are sharper. Anyway i guess that's just a lottery.
Well… the 18-55mm is being discontinued, so you won’t really have that option.
Yea I heard about it too now.
great recap... if you can, feel free to quote my blog as the source of the information. Other than that... spread the Fuji love on your channel and good luck with that
Awesome! Will do!
they need mo xc lenses!!! they should also have a zoom lens like 18/23/27-70mm 2.8
The Xc lenses just have lower build quality, but the image quality is the same right?
@@lukasbenjamin_ yes, xc lenses also haven't aperture ring.
I doubt Fuji will release a 400mm F/2.8... it would be massive and expensive, I'd like to see a 400mm F/4 with built in 1.4X tele (granted I doubt that will happen) but a 300mm F/4 would be good.
The new Kit lens is exactly that it's a kit lens, I'm not going to go out and buy it, but if it is available for £/$100 more than body only when I buy my next camera I'd pick it up, OIS for photography at such short focal lengths is not a big deal (as only ever 2-3 stops) as you still need a tripod if you are using really long exposures. However the internal zoom is great for video shooters on a gimbal, the variable aperture not so much but an F/4.8 at 1/48 for video is serviceable if you are not wanting a super shallow DOF
To be honest, I'm interested to see what Tamron & Sigma's plans for the X-mount are in 2024.
Totally agree, the IBIS isnt that big a deal on such short focal lengths. Lets see how this new lens will be priced. An integrated TC would be cool, though I doubt they would add something like this. But realy, who knows :-) lets wait and see.
Nikon 180mm lens was a special lens way back in time built like a tank. Fuji XF 180mm f4? Some expensive Fuji XF lenses made in Japan highly rated. Or made in China usually just as good.
Would be a cool lens, but I couldn’t imagine them doing this in the near future, as they have the 200mm f2.
Oooh. Digbeth represent! ✊
Huh?
I want a 23-50/2 or 18-50/2 pro level zoom.
Those would be huge Lenses, doubt they’d go that route.
@@lukasbenjamin_ Given how small the sigma 18-50 2.8 is, and the fact that canon has a 28-70/2, something with a shorter zoom range than the 16-55 should be doable.
Front element size is affected by the widest focal length of a zoom and its speed, and the length by its longest focal length. I would prefer a 23-50 to keep size manageable.
Very comprehensive video 6:41
The best camera for stealthy photography is a phone camera mounted where the power button normally is, so you can shoot while looking like watching a video or gaming on your phone, what nobody made it? Because the best stealthy street photography camera happens to be a perfect pervert camera too, AI could help with that one day though
It might be ideal for the stealthy aspect, tbh I personally dont enjoy shooting with my phone. I really like shooting manually on my Fujifilm camera.
tbh none of these lens really really appeal to me so far, i'm more aiming for street and travel photography with some portrait here and there so the 16-55 is interesting but i'm more drawn towards primes so i'm planning on starting with a used xt20 and a ttartisan 27mm f2.8 for cost reason, then later on expand with an xf 50mm f2
The 27mm ttartisan is a very interesting lens, that I’m also considering currently. 16-55 is just a bit too large for me unfortunately.
@@lukasbenjamin_ same i really want a small lens for street photography, and especially on a smaller body i feel like the 16-55 would be a bit unbalanced
@@deneguil-1618 I already think my 16-80 is unbalanced without an l bracket on my xt4, 16-55 on an even smaller body would bug me a lot I think
No ois... The single big reason to replace the 18-55. But it doesn't have ois. Not expected that for a kitlens... Big middlefinger to users of older camera's without ibis. Not cool
Tbf, I assume most people using the 18-55 wouldn’t upgrade anyway. And it seems like their way forward is to include ibis in most cameras. I get your point though, it would have been a nice addition.
@@lukasbenjamin_ just sad to see the defenite departure from the Kaizen structure that got Fujifilm the love in the first place.
And sure, they haven't cared about older camera's in ages. But now actually creating incentive to have to upgrade to newer bodies trough leaving out crucial functionality on newer lenses is another level of capitalism added to the brand.
Sure they gotta make money. But if they keep this trend they will lose their unique and competitive edge. Fujifilm should not forget that their edge has always been software (emulation) and Kaizen. Not their unique features. Camera design is a stylistic choice, not an edge. The old skool styling is something other brands already are catching up to. Only a matter of time until the likes of sony and nikon create similar beautiful and unique camera's, with general better image and performance quality.
Fujifilm could and should do better... But instead they are focussed on the larger audience for the moneyz
@@AnoshterHaar im pretty sure I’ve read a couple of days ago something about a promise to keep the kaizen way alive. Don’t quote me on it though 😅. But it sure felt that way in the last few years, that they didn’t keep this up anymore. It’s something I didn’t know about when I started with fujifilm, but it was a pleasant surprise.
Removed OIS... How stupid is this? IBIS gives crop... and it's worse than OIS in some situations!
I wish that Tamron will make 17-100 with their OIS for Fuji. 18-300 is not usable on the long end and the picture quality is questionable.
It’s not gonna suit every photographer, but I understand they have to make some concessions to be able to keep the small form factor. But it’s not so bad per se. Lots of other lenses don’t have ois.
Yup, that’s so stupid.
I think you are confusing IBIS with DIS here… there is no crop when the sensor is shifting, the full resolution is used. only digital image stabilization will incur a cropped image as its stabilization after the sensor has taken the image (video stabilization only for this one)
@@ritterkeks yeah, you're right. I've dig into this few days ago. But also it's happen that IBIS isn't a panacea! A decent OIS is better ( not talking about steadycams and gimbles) IMO. But you still need to move accurately.
The background noise/music is very annoying!
I try to always find a good balance between the background music not being too loud but still being somewhat audible, guess I missed the boat on this one.
none of the 4 lenses are interesting for me. time to leave the fuji system.
Unfortunate but maybe you’ll find a better fit with another camera system :-)
You sound petulant and spoilt. You live in a time of tech marvels. All manufacturers produce equipment that would seem magical to our grandparents
The new kit lens is a strong NO.
Haha, for me it’s a strong yes, just want to see the IQ and I might switch. I’d love the small form factor for travelling. Ois isn’t all that important for me.
