You refer to Richard Mulligan and Catherine Helmond as playing "elderly" characters. Mulligan was in his 50s in his show, and Helmond, while not young, could not be described as elderly. The only person who played a prominent role as an elderly cast character was Estelle Getty on The Golden Girls. I don't think you know the meaning of the word "elderly."
Richard Mulligan was sort of the TV version brother from another mother of Leslie Nielson. Played plenty of heavies and starred in intense dramas. And the really funny thing about that was Estelle Getty was played by a woman who was considerably younger than the other cast members portraying golden girls, despite playing the mother of one! I wish I could remember her name right now. She was an outstanding and convincing performer.
