Situations like these have made me concerned for child actors ever since. I hope, for example, that the child actors from Modern Family and The Middle are doing okay. From what I understand, having all that attention for years and years and then suddenly not having it anymore can be a serious psychological shock.
It is sad that many child actors end up trying to recapture the fame and attention that they once had. There should be more support for child actors so that they can adapt to a more normal life once they are no longer required by Hollywood etc.
Drunk driving laws are actually enforced now. There was a time when cops would give you a break. If they hadn't, I could probably have been arrested for it a dozen times. I wound up with one DUI and quit drinking shortly thereafter. Best decision I ever made.
Drunk driving is a reckless selfish stupid act. And I am being polite. I had an Aunt that had just beat breast cancer and was struck and killed by a drunk driver in a grocery store parking lot. The driver was doing 60 through the parking lot.
Obviously, Tracey Gold learned NOTHING from the drunk driving episode of Growing Pains. That episode should have taught many the dangers of drunk driving. Matthew Perry didn't learn anything either.
All three kids from "Diff'rent Strokes" were accused of crimes. What was going on the set of that show? What were the adults on set and behind the scenes doing, not keeping an eye on these kids?
The saddest for me were Gary Coleman and Dana Plato, especially Dana because I only recently found out that her son also committed suicide. I have no doubt that what happens to the children in that industry is because of the kinds of abuse they suffer.
Oddly enough, in the early days of TV child actors often did better after the shows were over, because of people like Jackie Coogan(the original Uncle Fester), who ran advocacy groups to prevent child labor exploitation.

Unfortunately, Shirley Temple had to fight off preditors, even as a child. She said that she was regularly groped, terrorized, and threatened by Hollywood executives.
A lot of the issues for child entertainers occur after fame ends. Many can't adjust to a return to normal life as an adult. Others keep trying to be taken seriously as adult actors but find it impossible to breakthrough their former cutesy stereotype. The one's you mentioned continued to be famous and work in entertainment even in adulthood. Fame is an emotional drug so its understandable that once lost, many former child entertainers turn to drugs and alcohol to maintain that high.
I think you missed the point. Ron Howard was an actor of the 70’s, Shirley Temple was an actress of the 30’s and Billy Mummy was an actor of the 60’s. These are all actors of the 80’s in sitcoms. The author could have done the same for actors on any decade.

I remember Dawn Wells issues, and she did the sitcom reunion movies for Gilligan's Island one in 81 and did the Gilligan's Planet cartoon as Mary Ann, and guest star on ALF and Growing Pains. Dana Plato's life after Different Strokes is a case reminder of how Hollywood used the actors and actresses up especially children when they can't find other work. Dawn Wells, Erin Moran, Dan Plato and others become flat broke and do not earn any or much money off of reruns and all that. I think after what happened to Dana? Things began to change to give support, but it did not helped in Erin's case as she became homeless.
