Congratulations! That is not too bad for that generation. I recently saw that iPods are becoming popular again and so that might be why it was a little high.
Super helpful video! Just bought 5.5 off ebay for less than 30 dollars! The seller had it listed as a 5, and it had heavy "scratches" on the front, but I think with a little TLC I could get it looking nice again. Double checked the model number and it lines up with 5.5 gen. Looking forward to getting it, would be cool to flash mod in the future
Awesome! That is a great score for a low price. These iPods are easy to open and replace that front bezel when you flash mod it. So happy for you @fatherantwan!
@@moneyymanetv buy them from a chinese refurbisher... I did and it was less than 60 dollars (5.5) and when I opened it up I saw some quality control stickers on one of the cables and the screen inside. Yes, they put a new screen in the one I bought in 2023. It came only with light scratches on the body which I fully replaced anyway
I've had a 5.5 since 2007 and never knew there was a search function... lol I'm restoring it (for the 3rd or 4th time) after my new battery and lcd come in.
You learn something new everyday! Now you can confirm it definitely is the coveted 5.5 gen. I am glad you are keeping it going with a battery and new screen, I listen to my iPod daily and these things rock!
That's a good way to tell them apart, but you wrote off those other ebay iPods too quickly lol. The "search" shows up on the music menu automatically, but has to be enabled on the home menu. Hope that helps.
The screen on the 5.5 is brighter and is supposed to have a better sound than the 5th gen. The 5.5 gen video iPod is supposed to have the best sound because of the Wolfson DAC. Other than the sound, Search function and brighter screen they are pretty much the same, nothing too different betwixt the 5th gen and 5.5 in the processing of files or anything like that.
So the only diference between 5 and 5.5 is ram memory only!! Both has dac wolfson dac on it. 30gb use 32mb ram 60/80 gb 64mb ram. 60/80 gb has more ram for better performance, fast search and less battery use. 64mb ram helps a lot in rockbox aplication by the way. Anyway!!! I hope those details help you guys!!
Thank you for the information, but that doesn’t help in seeing the iPod. There is no way to see that on the screen to differentiate the two models. When I say “the only way to know the difference” that is specifically referring to the “Search” function that can be seen on the screen as a quick way to tell. No one can see the ram on the screen and would not be able to use that information to determine which model it is based on an internet photo or if it is in their hand.
@@ourfamilyadventure326 my 30 gb 5 gen early jan 2006 has the search app too just like the 5.5 has!! So the best way to see that is to press menu and back button together and hold around 5 secs to see a bios menu and get the true vesion there!!
Then your iPod is a 5.5 and it has a superior quality sound according to everything I have seen. Also you wanna try to explain how to press the buttons to see the bios to an online seller who barely even knows how to turn it on? This video is a reference for someone to quickly tell the difference from an online photo not to go into the menutia of every single nitty gritty detail of ram and motherboard size and color variations of white and black betwixt the two and how one is ever so slightly taller. This video is just a quick reference for someone to tell the difference by glancing at one photo instead of interrogating the seller.

I don’t disagree with you about the DAC, do the simplest of internet searches and you will find a plethora of blogs and videos discussing the differences betwixt the 5th gen and the 5.5 gen with most people saying that the 5.5 gen has a richer better sound quality than the 5th gen. Whatever Apple changed on the “Enhanced (5.5) iPod Video” made an ever so slightly better sound quality to that model. The iPod 5th gen Video is VEEERRRRYYYYYYYY close in sound quality and richness to the 5.5 gen but most people agree the 5.5 gen is better. The 5.5 also commands a higher amount of money than it’s predecessor. This video is for people who want the best and can just tell at a glance, you are not disagreeing with me but most people who argue this point.
It’s not the best input method for sure. I think Apple just added it as a “feature” just because they could. The main thing with the Search feature is that it is the only way to prove you have the 5.5 instead of just the 5th generation.
@@ourfamilyadventure326 ah, almost forgot, the solitaire game also terrible😅 why apple still put that game in their products that only have scroll wheel, but remove it when "touch" ipod comes out
I mean, search function is not a big deal, sellers do not set that feature in the main menu maybe because they don't use that Go for 5, or 5.5 if someone sells it cheaper🤭
I like the Solitaire game as a concept and am able to play that a lot better than that Parachute game! Now Parachute SHOULD NOT have been on the iPod at all 🫤
The Search feature, a brighter screen and a slightly better DAC are the only differences I am aware of. The 5.5 is supposed to have a better sound than the 5th generation.
@ourfamilyadventure326 naw both have the same dac, they both sound the same. its mainly search feature and brighter screen. 5th gen 60gb and 5.5th gen 80gb models also have 64mb of ram while 30gb of both models have 32mb ram(doesn't make much difference except if you have ridiculous amount of songs(like 12k+ songs) 64mb ram will run better.
I appreciate your more in depth explanation. I have always read that the 5.5 sounds slightly better than the 5, although they run neck and neck the 5.5 just barely squeezes past the 5th generation. That is just what I have read though.
Video is misleading, 5.5 ones don't come with "Search" enbled for you, you hve to switch it on yourself and if the person selling it hasn't done so it doesn't mean it's not 5.5 all 5.5 have their serial ending with V9K, V9P, V9M, V9R, V9L, V9N, V9Q
That is why in the video that you didn’t watch I showed switching Search on and how to do it. The serial number ending helps IF the seller actually bothers to show it. The point of the video is how to quickly tell it is a 5.5 because of the Search feature if you only see the screen and not a close up of the teeny weeny serial number on the back.
There’s nothing stopping someone from putting a 60 GB hard drive and back plate onto a 5.5. I do this genuinely every day.
You are right sir. I just could not find one as an example, but I’m sure they exist.
I cannot believe you are commenting on my video, what an honor!
Just got mine (iPod 5.5) on eBay for $64 including tax and shipping, I think its a little too much but I love it, can’t wait for it to be here.
