Ipod Classic 5.5 vs 7th Generation comparison

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 16 ส.ค. 2024
  • In this video I make a comparison between the Ipod Classic 5.5 and 7th generation. The Ipod Classic 7th generation is more modern and is thinner with more stoage, but I think the Ipod Classic 5.5 is better because of the dac. If you care about sound quality, you should definitely get the Ipod Classic 5.5.
Thank you all for watching and feel free to share your thoughts down in the comment section below :)

Nothing like getting away from those pesky streaming services. Owning my music is much more important to me than convenience.
I a Zune 30 GB to this day as well. Getting a new battery for it soon as the charge is not good.
I also have a 5.5 iPod coming in the mail, so I can just jump between the Zune and iPod whenever I want. It will also have a flash mod and a battery upgrade in it, when it arrives.

When Apple first introduced the 6th gen iPod classic(80GB & "thick" 160GB) back in 2007, the "black" iPod was actually black. But they somehow changed the color to dark gray in 2008 with the introduction of the 120GB model. Don't know why though. Perhaps the color was supposed to be space gray before the space gray.

Are there any major differences between the 6th gen ipod classic and 7th gen?

    • @mcmh9523
      @mcmh9523 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@neilnair5388 If you're talking about the differences between the 2007 and 2008-onward models, there are some slight differences. None of them I consider to be "major", but they might be relevant to some.
      A) The 2007 models came in two capacities and thicknesses, a thinner 80GB model and a physically thicker 160GB model; the 2008 model came in a thin case yet it had 120GB of capacity; and the 2009 model retained the same thin case while increasing the capacity even more to 160GB.
      B) As far as I know the 2007 80GB model had less battery capacity(30 hrs of music playback) compared to later models(36 hrs), while the 2007 160GB (thick) model had more battery capacity(40 hrs) thanks to the physically larger battery. Of course this is largely irrelevant in 2022 as the original batteries are probably either stone-dead or replaced by now.
      C) The 2007 models do not work with remotes and microphones built into some headphones, including the Apple Earbuds and EarPods.
      D) The 2007 models have an older version of firmware installed, and it does not support Genius.
There might be other differences I forgot to mention, but these are the top four that I can remember right now.

The truth is the 5.5 is the one that you want if you want to modify your iPod it's a little bit thicker so it allows for a larger aftermarket battery to be installed for longer battery life and replacing the hard drive with an SD card option for a lot larger storage capacity up to 1tb if you want to go that route and the sound quality for audiophiles is superior slightly but noticeable but be wary of the 6th generation which has the worst sound quality........ and everybody runs Rock Box

5.5 gen (iPod Video) and older use DAC from Wolfson Microelectronics which are also used in other audiophile equipment. Later ones use like the 6th gen "Classic" use Cirrus Logic which many say have a tiny bit lower sound quality. The 6.5 gen (often called 7th gen) had audiophiles arguing - some saying still worse SQ, others saying same SQ as the Wolfson-equipped older models. No one says it got worse than the 6th. Later Wolfson was bought by Cirrus but that's much later.

As i understand it the 5.5 had a wolfson dac whereas the so called 7th gen had apples own dac which was a different dac to the 6th gen classic which again had an apple dac but was not very good audio quality. I have a 7th gen one and the sound quality is good for what it is. Its not wise to set the bar too high as this is an apple product and all they ever cared about was making as much profit for themselves as possible.

John Garbutt The 7th gen dac is a cirrus and although the output may be slightly different, both are very good. The 6th gen is usually said to be of lesser quality, however it really largely depends upon the audio quality of the file itself. In actual use most people could never tell the difference between the two.

THE IPOD 5 or 5.5 DOES NOT SOUND “BETTER” THAN THE 7TH. THAT’S JUST A MYTH STARTED BY A BUNCH OF LOONY AUDIOFOOLS.

flashcrash No, not sarcasm. There is no difference in “sound quality” between the two.

flashcrash It isn’t true, the 7th gen definitely sounds more “artificial” in a way and the 5.5 has a more realistic 3D sound.

Miles Clifford-Nicholson Your ignorance is showing. To think that an older iPod “sounds better” or is more “realistic and 3D” just because it has a “special DAC” that reads 1s and 0s more accurately is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. It’s laughable. I won’t have any trouble sleeping at night if an audiofool thinks differently. It’s like believing in Global Warming. Some people just believe stuff based on heresy without ever having done the research.
