learning this at the moment with my singing teacher, i'm kinda torturing myself by watching all these professional versions cos i know i'll never be that amazing lol
You will if you keep at it and try to sing it better every time you sing it. Practice is the key to getting this good and acquiring the techniques to master this. Many opera stars work with an acting and staging coach once they've learned the role, to put it all together. You WILL be this good if you aspire to it and work hard every day toward it! That's how they got this good.
@wanzenettl It's Mozart who cut the aria with arrival of Idamante (I wonder how it ends when it's performed as a part of a soprano concert): interruption is a significant feature of 'Idomeneo', and a unique one for the work's time.
Yes indeed, it also had Frederica von Stade and Luciano Pavarotti - and surely Idomeneo has been blessed with no finer cast in its more than 200 years.
Till today I do not understand how and with what this woman made a carrier!!??? No voice, all the time same in each role: wheezing over something, terrible vibrato… realy

Totally agree, and her Susanna was EVEN better. Undoubtedly the finest of more Susannas than I can count that I have ever seen.
I hugely admire Cotrubas. A great Mozartian, to be sure, but by heaven she literally owned the middle Verdi roles of Gilda and Violeta.
A great Ilia, yes, and fantastic as Susanna, but she was also a clever Despina.
And lest we forget, Cotrubas was a most affecting Pamina.
