Excuse me and excuse me some more. I've been binge watching this eternal duet from the best singers in the industry and I can comfortably say that this is the best rendition of Papagena. The lament, the sounding Bells, the stylized Pa-Pa-Pa. This is the best the internet can offer. First of all this Papageno, Detlef Roth, is somewhat nerdy, handsome, vocally full and his acting is quirky and sweet and endearing with the most nuanced of movement. Then on comes Gaële Le Roi as Papagena flirtatious and free and full of tender care for Papageno. She is sweet, gentle, loving, and gives him looks between phrases that tell you that there is something there beyond paycheck work happening. Their musical union has created an eternal example of what Mozart was likely hoping would one day happen when this masterpiece was performed live. As memorable and desirable to me as Diana Damrau's "Der Holle Rache".
Thank you for sharing your comment. Always loved the Zauberflöte and especially Papageno. To read a comment of someone sharing this love and I suppose more "experience" in the fine nuances is inspiring. Thank you very much.
It's so lovely, I've also watched it over and over. I love it that they play it straight instead of hamming it up, it's a comic scene, but when it feels like the characters themselves genuinely feel the emotions they're singing about rather than being "in" on the joke, it's actually a much more joyful scene.
Gaële Le Roi is a delight: not only has she been blessed with an amazing voice but she is certainly the most beautiful Papagena, ever. Mreci Gaële! Nous t'aimons beaucoup!!!
I am so addicted to this wonderful piece and absolutely delightful performance! For once I’m actually so happy about knowing German! I can sing along! Papapapapa...😄

That moment when I’m Italian, speak just Ita and Eng and I listen to a German aria with French subs and manage to understand... how amazing are Romance languages!
haha no worries, even as a german native it's sometimes hard to understand everything due to the archaic use of words and the musical pronunciation so the french subs come in handy^^
I really do think this the best version of this on the Net at present: singing, acting, timing, costumes, set, lighting, orchestra, conducting, all impeccable; the fey Mystical Boys must have rehearsed and rehearsed to be that good!
Ten years later, this is still MAGIC ON VIDEO. Thank you for sharing the brilliance of this composer for a sorry world to appreciate. It is much appreciated.
Charming, with a sweet touch of the ridiculous in the costumes, but what a rich and powerful voice Papagano--Detlef Roth--has. Stunning singing and staging, would love to see the rest of this performance.
Oh, how I wish I could sing like this! This video always puts a smile on my face... It is so fun to watch them, because they are so cute and so convincing that they love each other!
I'm taking Deutsch I right now, so this made sense, but only in the sections where he repeated "Eins, zwei, drei" and then "klingeln". I will say, this evokes such emotion. It's a magnificent masterpiece.
I have watched this play when I was 8 years old, when he whistles that small flute I felt like "back into the past" . Wonderful video, this is real art, so lovely 💚
This aria/song, is pure magic and absolutely wonderful! Its rich, beautifully flowing and brilliant melodies, based on a fabulous, and very enjoyable farewell-story to posterity, is now heartbreaking, now delightfully amusing, but always thoroughly entertaining. It ends in a lovely duet which inspires harmony and warm feelings of sympathy. The very beautiful voices add a pleasing touch to this excerpt from Mozart’s ingenious opera Magic Flute.
I just discovered this performance. I was really surprised - Detlef Roth is absolutely awesome and so is Gaëlle! But I'm also surprised that while this production seems to be so popular and quite well known, why did I never hear of these two before? I would love to hear them in a baroque opera perhaps. And I would LOVE to see Roth as Monteverdi's Orfeo. That would be a dream come true for me. It's a pity Jordi Savall didn't just catch this bird to sing for him!
I can just imagine the very first time this opera was performed, how did the spectators reacted to all that “pa-pa-pa”… This is Mozart reinventing Opera.
Actually, spectators were already a bit prepared since earlier in this opera Papageno has a duet with prince Tamino where he does just hm sound for a while.
Roth is great! Papageno is one of my favorite opera characters. I named my spaniel after him. I love calling his name, and he goes nuts when I play this famous duet.

Bach?
