Possibly the greatest scene of melodrama in the history of the world.
Cotrubas was my first, and will always be, Violetta. Her fragility and humanity showed me this role, this opera. Placido in his prime, and damn, MacNeil. PERFECTION

One of the so many ROMANIAN SOPRANOS who sang Violetta at the best all over the world.... She is unique: mastery of the voice, mastering her acting... I love her!!! Thank you for sharing! God bless your heart!

@@marcelpopa8018 Așa este: de ales, în astfel de situații, nu se prea poate, pentru că fiecare este minunată, dar altfel de minunăție... și dacă mai adăugăm la listă și alte Violete românce, comparația se complică... :-) Miricioiu, Gheorghiu, sunt doar două care îmi vin acum în minte.... :-)
that "Taci" is heartbreaking. I just fall in love with this production and i can not see another Violeta (i saw 4 production in this lockdown, and Cotrubas just stole my heart). The casting was impeccable

THOSE WHO ARE REALLY FOND OF OPERA KNOW WELL WHO COTRUBAS WAS AND STILL LIKE HER !
With this performance, I come to think that Domingo is not to be judged by the performance in Gala concerts that you can see almost anywhere in TH-cam . What really matters to real opera tenor is not the ability to produce dry high notes, but the ability to bring the feeling and absorbance in the performance to audience.

このオペラの中で一番ドラマチックな場面だ。歌い手の演技力がとても必要になる。歌唱力だけではダメらしい。お父さんがひどい。裏では椿姫に「息子と別れろ！」と言っているくせに、息子には知らぬ顔を決め込む。
Ilena Cotrubas is gifted with absolutely angelic voice, unfortunately she has such terrible breaths control. But she managed to make it work by framing and masking it as part of her emotion so you would forgive her

As always the singing of Contrubas utterly convincing and heartfelt. Great cast.
Luceafarul Yes her breath control left much to be desired, Yet it did not hinder her from singing in all the great Opera Houses World Wide. In her teenage years she was told that her beautiful voice would never make the Opera stage. Her true friends 👭👬👫 & especially her beloved husband told her otherwise. The rest is history my friend. Nonsense.....breath problems? What about Domingo then?? ....There is absolutely nothing to forgive her about. If we hear the horrors of today`s Opera you can be sure of finding almost all having breathing problems.
@@clarkepaul837 this is such a red herring. I have yet heard even ONE other singer of her caliber who breaks up Mozart’s coloratura phrases in martern aller arten to take four breathes in between. Nor loudly gasping for air in libiamo. And no domingo does not do any of these things.
As you all see, there is no any tricks needed, to make real and touching opera., even in the epoque.🙂

XxSaruman82xX Sorry to say this performance of Traviata was not released by the MET on DVD. I REALLY WISH THEY WOULD FOR OBVIOUS REASONS MY FRIEND. I recorded it on VHS in 1981 Live from the MET. Cotrubas herself said that she was not in good voice. Yet She recieved great reviews etc. She is known to be a true ARTIST & has very high standards for the greatest ART FORM IN THE 🌎. Madame Cotrubas sang in all the great Opera houses in Europe prior to this performance she's sang all the great Opera Houses from La Scala Covent Garden Etc. I called the Met a couple of times without a positive outcome. Sometimes they make these stupid decisions what DVD will be released etc. Arnold Bourbon Amaral.
I subscribed to Met on Demand, and now pay $14.99 a month, and can listen and watch anything in their CATALOGUE as long as I pay them, and this performance - they have it. I would prefer to have a DVD, but it does not exist.
