Broadcasted on TVE2 December 2, 1981 on Musical Express, Spain' The band: John Cale, Andy Summers, Ollie Halsall, Zanna Gregmar, Pere Colom and Miguel Figuerola.
In 1974, when Kevin Ayers, John Cale, Nico and Eno were doing some concerts together, he also did some great stuff with KA - check out his solo on 'Blue'.
Andy Summers also played on the Kevin Coyne song 'Savior' with the immortal lyric 'Stretchin' and a retchin' by the riverside' and an a Capella break that is...intense.
Yes, Elvis was aware. This song, even when Elvis sang it, is about a deeply depressed person contemplating suicide. The song is based upon an actual news story in the mid-50's about a suicide.
Andy Summers rips the ever-lovin' s$%t out of his guitar during the solo, and it's so much better than that rather sterile sound for which he's known. Even though Cale isn't using his fiddle, the two guitarists do a fine job of impersonating his viola sound. This is rock 'n roll.
It takes big brass balls to try and top a song most people relate to Elvis. But... Holy sh**. It's like Cale is the only one of the two men who interpreted the f**king lyrics correctly. I can absolutely believe _he wants to die_ . Love him. [standing ovation]
I saw the Guts tour at the Armadillo. Friend of mine came out from backstage after the opening act and said John's already downed half a bottle of Jack. THIS IS GOING TO BE SO FUCKING AMAZING!!!. It was. WAY more scary than this version.
This the Welshman John Cale formerly of the Velvet Underground is not dead. The Oklahoma native JJ Cale ("After Midnight", "Cocaine") died on 25/26 July 2013. This one, John "Davies" Cale is still kicking. He has an OBE from the Queen, though probably not specifically for this Elvis Presley rendition!
@@robertogalvez2423 well Shrek popularized his Hallelujah. I saw him perform it on a piano in Central Park about 10 years before Shrek. Devastating, even on a sunny summer's day. Kudos to the Shrek music supervisor who chose his version and not Jeff Buckley's (or Leonard's, for that matter)
@@Muddyrich I'm an old Cale fan. When I heard his Hallelujah in Shrek I could not believe it (John Cale in a cartoon movie???) and I was proud of him, because I thought he would finally leave his cult artist status, however his karma (?) or whatever happened made the version of Rufus Wainwright the one to be heard in the CD soundtrack. Many believe John's version is Rufus'.
@@robertogalvez2423 That's right! Even Rufus jumped on that song, though his version reminds me more of Jeff's. Have you seen the pretty new documentary on Hallelujah? definitely worth a watch...
@@Muddyrich I'm dying to watch it, being a Cohen fan too. However I live in Peru, South America. The producers told me they haven't arranged to show it in our countries yet.
Why are you guys putting this down? Don't you understand brilliance? Andy Summers played with John Cale??? that's very cool. The recorded version of this song is just like this so you know. It wasn't just for the show.... I love it. Thanks for posting.
Amazing, i love the haunting harmonised lead. it's so hypnotic!!! However I'm sure Mr.Presley would be horrified haha! Cale's version is amazing and who's on keys??? Jesus I nearly popped a lob-on!!! :P
And this was not a complaint, but just a friendly remark. But then, I guess that Nick learned a lot from John. And Cale has done so many different things.
So he was "dying," brilliant. I wish I could find more performances of his like this, from the late 1970s - early 1980s. I, too, was mystified by his possession of the credit card and the slip of paper...I assumed the lyrics were on the paper? Because he didn't look too sober in that clip...nevertheless he was good!

One of the best covers ever!
fuck am late to the party , but yer right , hope your still breathing , x peace
he completely turned this song upside down and made his own. one of the best covers of all time.
The baseball cap, bow and sunglasses! Great! He is so lovely!

Incredible performance and with Andy Summers in guitar, wowwwwwww
Wow, he sure was tired at the end. Love it. His attempt to do "the robot" was downright heroic.
Best version ever
man....how can u not like this? lol seriously i found out about this guy 2 weeks ago and im now addicted and cant find a song i DONT like lol
Génial!
Honestly, this dude was a genius. This is so fucking funny and yet still badass and great.
Was? Still is. Look up his recent “Mercy” album - still killin’ it in his 80s.
Greatest $hit I have ever seen. Golden.
Oh yeah, and I really love this version, it unfolds Cales´s subversive humour!
Great version of a Presley classic. Love the mix in the band.
John Cale at the height of his 'unintentionally hilarious glam rock' phase.
Andy Summers also played on the Kevin Coyne song 'Savior' with the immortal lyric 'Stretchin' and a retchin' by the riverside' and an a Capella break that is...intense.

God to play on lousy night. Makes me alive for sure
Olly Halsall RIP what a legend!
The definitive version surely!
super!
Yes!
With a very cool Andy Summers.
Great!
Thanks for uploading.
And Ollie Halsall! what a double guitar attack
Wowee. Years before but evocative of Nick Cave
He recorded a Peel Session with the Birthday Party the same day this was broadcasted, if the other commenter up top is correct. Love them both.
Cave obviously a big fan
Credit card in one hand, trucker cap, golden bow tie, and is that a nicotene patch? What rich symbolism.

It's better for this song when he is behind the piano..... It's more fun...
and what's wrong with that?
Sexy girl playing the keyboards, Andy Summers (of POLICE fame later on), Jon Cale looking like a mobster .... a weird presentation.
The Police and Summers were already big - 'Roxanne' came out in '78; by 1980 they were doing world tours.
