I had the incredible good luck to see Cale perform the entirety of Paris 1919 (and more) at the Brooklyn Academy of Music with a full orchestra. For decades this was on my bucket list -- never thought I'd see it happen. Phenomenal experience and show!
Saw Cale and band at rhe tiny Venue(???) club in Soho in 1977----dressed as s Surgeon and Ice Hockey mask---the best gig I have ever seen ever by anyone...did Heartbreak Hotel and so many others....so long ago Still stays with me..... ..
Yes, the Marquee in Wardour Street, I was at that gig in 77. Wanted a Cale T shirt at the merch table...none available. The ice hockey mask was alleged to be a jokey parody of the infamous Cambridge Rapist apparel
Paris 1919, non solo la canzone, ma tutto l' LP rimane una delle esperienze musicali più emozionanti...e John Cale uno dei musicisti più completi e più sottovalutati!
Hey Albert, you are so right I have a really simple idea We say helllo John and get others to say it Then they'll have to ask themselves why am I saying helllo John Then they'll have to give his music a spin and find out what we already know An astonishing amount of astonishing original music for decades I want this to happen while Cale's still alive I am the You Tube Cube With Teeth Let's go viral with teeth Long Live John Cale !

Some of the comments about Lou Reed are a bit silly. Reed's Berlin came out in 1973 (as did Paris 1919). Both albums are now considered masterpieces, each mining the 20th century to map out the decadence of the 1970s. The Velvet Underground changed things...the change would've been less significant if either Cale or Reed had missed the orgy.

@@squirrelbutler2119 well he recorded it at a slower tempo, so I should’ve stated I prefer his slower tempo recording of that track. Should I tell John that also? So you think no one accept the composer are allowed an opinion? Or definitely they shouldn’t express their opinion!??!😂😂🤣 WTF is wrong with these types of snowflakey attitudes at opinions that are different to theirs?

Absolutely love this, the female violinist you see in the background looks like she's having the time of her life.

What a great expansion on a legendary song from a legendary album from a legendary artist. I guess you could say I like this!
legendary
An under-appreciated masterpiece
BRILLIANT. There's an even better live version here.

Meant yhe Marquee, not the Venue....wheres my brain going???
I saw that tour at Leeds University. As you say, one the best live performances I've ever seen...

Sounds AMAZING
one of the best pieces of song if not the best orchestral song.

Long Live John Cale !
one of my faves. he plays it alot faster live, here and other places. A true classic
I can't tell you how long I've desperately looked for this full concert. I think I've commented on EVERY video! I would love to find this someday.

Thank you! Love this performance of an incredibly special song.
it is a special song
Saw this live in Norwich. The best concert I have ever been to!
Probably one of my favourite Cale songs. Not going to get over his live version of Venus in Furs but Lou wrote that.
GemCast yes Lou wrote it but its John's amazing arrangement that makes the song the genius work that it is!!
They both developed that one into what it became, as with all the early VU material
This song is soooo gggrrreeeaaat! Love the orchestra!
xoxo The Clarences
This is the best version of the song imo.
Simply amazing. Thank you!
The same voice. Incredible.
This is possibly my new favorite thing ever!
Who'd have thought it. Graham Green's still alive and kicking.....and singing!
never seen a better clip!
John cale is the musician and vocalist that is
most definately, of all the current artists possessed of genius (thanks to Mailer and Burroughs).
This one time I'll allow a soul patch
Ha! Just barely though...
I'll tell Master Cale the good news.
Genius

My all time fave song John.
This is from Malmoe Operahouse in Sweden....
How great is this? :)
wow

sterling work Sir S, will you be uploading the rest? Please say yes! One of the greatest albums recorded
A madly fast arrangement!
A falta de Lou Reed, que en paz descanse, aquí está John Cale.
It was essential that the high note G sounded in octaves at the end of the song, and they didn't play it, a shame.
it takes me back to 1974...great album Paris1919. but John Cake never has had a singing voice ...
I guess i disagree ... oh you've written John Cake, never heard of him
could easily be a Richard Thompson song
Sufjan Stevens definitely listened to this stuff

Wot a song. Wot an album. Never did get to Garnet Town. Not this trip anyhow. It's not going anywhere.
The VU never fooled the cognisant; Cale & Nico made them, and Reed rode the shirt-tails. Fortunately for him, he could bang out the odd decent rhyme
Come on now. Lou Reed was the man waiting for the man. It does no good to lift Cale at the cost of putting down Reed. Cale stands on his own.
Sure beats that Lou Reed Look-at-Me stuff
Too fast
you should contact John Cale and tell him that
I'm sure he'd be glad to learn that from you

seems rushed. I have a version that is a few bpm slower that I prefer
thumbed this down.
had another think. played it back at 0.75 speed.
much better !
same

Try it at 0.25 speed, it's frickin' amazing!!
