    what a great project! I love prerendered backgrounds. Somehow they have an appeal that modern full 3D games just don't have. Thats the reason I regularly go back to games like Final Fantasy 7-9 or Resident Evil, Z, etc. :).

    • @AaronGwynaireGameDev
      @AaronGwynaireGameDev 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, it's Aaron here from Defy Reality Entertainment. Glad you like the project! Definitely agree with the prerendered appeal. It's fun watching a render come to life on screen too! :)

    I absolutely love prerendered backgrounds and OG resident evil games. I've done this style tech in Unity, Unreal and custom engine. The side game I'm working on now uses prerendered backgrounds, and while it gives you that true OG nostalgic feel and complete artistic freedom, there are lot of drawbacks of using in a modern engine that's not built for it, your iteration time will be much slower.
    e.g. a simple "hey I want to place an item pickup on this shelve" can be very painful, because you have your visuals (2D image) and your simplified collision geometry (which doesn't match your visuals 1:1, its simplified), you kind of have to blindly place the object where you think the shelves are, and run the game, is it in the right place? Yes? Lucky, No? (probably), try again. Transparency can be a big pain to get right (or get at all) so you usually have to resort to dithering or cutouts (fake transparency). It works, it just takes a lot of work and effort. And if your prerenders aren't absolutely jaw dropping stunning pretty, there really isn't much difference in doing it real-time in engine with a fixed camera.
    For that reason I think Aaron did an amazing job here, it is no simple feat to finish a game like this, congrats! Game looks awesome btw

      @@AaronGwynaireGameDev i never really played these kind of games, but curious. is it like the player have different choices, then the story can go in different ways? like multiple ending and things like that?

    • @AaronGwynaireGameDev
      @AaronGwynaireGameDev ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, so there will be a variety of endings, and it does come down to choice, and the non-linear gameplay will enable each player to take their own route to solving the puzzles, etc

    That's some great pedigree...the Millers created an absolute work of art with the Myst series, and if you haven't read the book series that fleshes out that universe, I'd definitely recommend it. Big footprints to walk in for sure, but the style of this looks great and seems to evoke that same feeling.
    And Microprose is responsible for probably my absolute favorite DOS-era game, Darklands. I'd fight many people to be the person who got the chance to reboot that game franchise!

    • @AaronGwynaireGameDev
      @AaronGwynaireGameDev 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely agree. I have read Myst The Book of Atrus! My plan is to write books to detail more of the backstory for Neyyah (and beyond). Glad you feel the similar vibe of Neyyah. For me it’s a natural form to fall into. Microprose are awesome! A great fit for Neyyah’s nostalgia :) feel free to wishlist Neyyah on Steam!

    While UE5 is an absolute contender for the looks. I really appreciate these old games if well done. The photorealistic slideshow style gets really personal and feels real in an almost weird way.

      Yeah, the one real time engine that COULD sway me lol. But I do love the cinematic feel of creating a game in the same style as Myst / Riven :)

    Interesting interview! In General the whole series was informative so far.
    First time I hear that publisher are hungry for content currently, had expected the opposite actually. Considering how much new games constantly coming out. What’s do you think is the reason for it COVID production delays? Or something totally else?
    Most people I know say I’m way to late for it.

    • @suitNtie22

      I think its a couple things. Companies are now realizing that strong Niches can be very profitable. most successful indie games at the moment Hit these Niche communities with games that they want so it generates great reviews and good money.
      I also think that most of these companies want to get Bought by bigger companies right now and the best way to get that is to make critical successes. They don't need to make tooons of money right now but if they see you have a bunch of well made and Highly praised games then they can always market them later or do a sequel that will make more money
