Dog Boat Ramp - Difficult to Build But Cheap - Easy In And Out for the Finn Dog

  • I used 1” (schedule 40, not thinwall) PVC pipe.
Using a heat gun I bent the pipe so it would protrude 66” from the boat. (I have made several for different dogs), usually to a length so it stored nicely on the boat.) Make 2 pieces to match and join them with a pvc coupling to achieve a width to suit your dog and the storage area on board.
Then I made 3 separators to stiffen the width of the ramp and by cutting 45% of the back of the tee I was able to snap it over the long sides of the ramp w/out having to cut the sides into short pieces weakening them. I need another video….
Using small stainless screws, #6 x 3/4” long to pin the tees into the long side.
I added a piece of metal shelving the the boat end of the ramp (about 12”) to give Finn a more solid base to jump up onto the boat.
I then stretched Pet Proof Window Screen across the rails to create a ‘trampoline’ for the dog to walk on, still using the #6 x 3/4” screws.
Then I bent 1/4” x 1” aluminum bar stock (usually only sold in 6’ lengths) into a ‘z’ shape so I could drop the ramp a few inches below the deck, thus lowering the angle of the ramp relative to the water. I drilled 3/16” holes through the top so I could pop-rivet it to the bottom of the pontoon deck. Then a 1/2” hole in the bottom of the ‘z’ to make it easy to use a 3/8” tubing to attach the pvc rails to the bracket.
I added a boat cushion to the top to give Finn something to climb up on and to add a little buoyancy. Then a few ‘noodles’ attached underneath to add even more buoyancy.

How did you attach the screen and the Noodles? Can we get a video close up?

I rolled the screen and use number six by half inch stainless steel Panhead screws to secure it. For the noodles I use plastic strapping, like metal banding iron, and ran it through the noodle and screwed it to the PVC. We plan on doing a new video showing Moore and Building yet but not for a while, sorry.

Hello Mr. Hardware, my sister sent me this link you posted. Let me know if you would like to build me one for my 14' 1962 Alumacraft. I have an 80lb Lab its very hard for me to lift into the boat. We have tried plywood on hinges to the top of transom, too heavy and truly in the way of the outboard tiller motor. I would only need to put it on the boat when I am taking her with me. Let me know if you would be interested or if my lab might be too heavy?

Sorry, I’m retired and not for hire. I would suggest the hinges (or whatever removable mount you use) be mounted 6” to 10” down from the top of the transom. It will lower the angle of the ramp and your dog can step over the top of the transom getting into the boat.

Very cool! My name is William I am a home owner in Michigan I need help. My basement drain has backed up for 15 years since I’ve lived here. I’ve done everything replace sewer line in backyard, put on back flow valves in basement floor. I still get water from floor drains in heavy rain. Now the plumber is telling me that I need a new trap in basement floor after he put in back flow valves having to jack hammer floor again. I’ve spent thousands trying to fix this problem and I can’t find a plumber to help fix this problem. Can u give me advice or refer someone I’m in wayne county thanks I’m advance!

Is the water backing up from the city sewer, black? Or is it semi-clear ? A common problem is that semi clear water indicates its rain water flowing towards the house.
I’d add a truckload of topsoil, 3 1/2 yards, per wall or so, to prevent water from flowing to the house and overwhelming your drain.

@@MrHardware1 well I get sometimes black & then clear. Since the backflows installed I just get the clear coming through drains spite the backflows installed

@@stackchips5991 The rainwater comes in from around your house. I’d raise the flowerbeds up 6 inches (or more) and taper it out in the yard 6 to 8 feet. That will keep rainwater from getting into your basement drains. If you don’t do that the rainwater will always come to the basement storm drain.
