The eraser is basically an abrasive - it takes off the top layer of the leather which removes the dirt, but leaves it vulnerable. Think it like a loofah or apricot scrub for leather. I used it and it actually removed the beautiful patina on my bag, much to my dismay. For this reason, I no longer use it on my vachetta. But agreed, if you have to use it on a very dirty bag, condition the heck out of it before and after. A lot of people don't realize that it can do more harm than good, so thanks for sharing.
Thank you for your thoughtful post. It seemed quite foreign to me to condition first but I became willing to adapt to this idea after watching them. Now you are truly reinforcing that process.
Oh no!!! So sorry that happened. But it's still a gorgeous bag! My vintage Speedy 25, which I did a video on, is in absolutely desperate need of a cleaning. I've watched a ton of videos, but yours is the first that suggests conditioning BEFORE cleaning.
I don't remember seeing any that mentioned conditioning first, either! I didn't hear about that until after this happened. :( I'll be sure to watch your Speedy videos. Thanks for watching.
Yeah I noticed after I used saddle soap to clean my vintage noe then Cadillac conditioner. After the first cleaning I saw a few small cracks that weren't there before then I just used the Cadillac leather conditioner only and left the saddle soap alone. My bag looks good now. Great video thank you 😁
Aww sorry to hear about your bag. The bottom of the bag looks great. Well at least your video is a learning experience. Thanks for the helpful information.
I am so happy I came across your video I was about to get my cubed dry race. My problem is is I kept seeing their orange stuff when I was kind of testing it so I still don’t know what that is.
The only leather conditioner I use is Obenauf’s. It’s all natural beeswax with natural oils suspended in it. A lot of conditioners and lotions will have chemicals like silicones and parabens that create an impermeable layer, and they seem, to be helpful, but the leather can actually end up drying out under that layer bc it’s not water soluble. Water naturally rolls off of beeswax, and beeswax naturally will dissipate, not buildup like silicones.
Use distilled water. It has the same pH as the leather. it wont make stains or destroy the leather. Theres a video here on YT about it. It really works.
i am watching this after i did the same thing, one of the handles on a speedy 30 i cleaned is cracked from that. however, the other one is fine so it was weird. it’s just hard to know what you can use and what you can’t.
Take it to professional cleaner. I had pen marks removed and bag polished by a shoe cobbler. I also had a designer belt reassembled. It's best to just leave the job to professionals. It cost less than 20 dollars. A lot less than buying the cleaners and conditioners to do it yourself.
Thanks so much for sharing! I like to clean my pre loved bags and I'm always looking for more info on that. It can be tedious to condition, clean, repeat, but it's worth it! I've definitely "lived and learned" with a few of my bags. :)
Gutted I seen this video so late I wrecked my Vintage Alma this week! Bought it as a project and wrecked it with saddle soap and magic eraser 🙄😭😭😭I have done so many bags but this one just didn't work out at all its heartbreaking! I have a few crafty ideas now to try and fix the mess! Don't want to spend any more on the bag!
Thank you so much for this info. I also ruined my noe but for using the saddle soap... it broke my heart! I’ve been meaning to use the magic eraser but I’m static. In case I decide to use it I will definitely be very careful.
Condition, clean, condition, clean... Magic Eraser is to be used very lightly on watermarks. Use a leather cleaner not Magic Eraser to clean vintage vachetta leather.
Thanks for the heads up!! I have to clean the handles of a vintage speedy and saddle soap didn’t cut it last year so they’re shiny and filthy so I was going to give this method a go tomorrow. I’ll follow your instructions and condition it first before having at it.
Thanks for posting this video because I'm trying to clean my monogram speedy and nothing seems to work. I also saw a few videos of people using that magic eraser and thought I might give it a try, but your video came just in time before I made that purchase.
I'm glad you found this helpful. From what I understand (I've watched more videos since I cleaned/damaged this bag) you just need to condition the bag before using the Magic Eraser. I missed that step. The Cadillac Leather Lotion is supposed to be a cleaner, too, so maybe try that first and if it doesn't get the bag clean enough then just make sure it's conditioned well then try the Magic Eraser...then condition again. That's what I would try if I was cleaning another bag. Best of luck to you!
Hey, I love your videos. I'm about to get my first pre-loved Loui ( alma pm). My bag is in decent condition except for some cracking and watermarks. Do you know of any measures i can take to help the cracking? Thanks keep up the good work, 😁
now that i have my first LV bag, which is so clean, i need to know how to keep it nice. conditioner, then clean , then conditioner..i am so confused..thank you very much.
Finally had a moment to watch this! First off, your video and audio quality has GREATLY improved!!! I guess I haven’t watched this far back! Also, bummer about the bag! Do you still own it? I have used that same brand of conditioner on my bags, but I want to say it wasn’t a lotion....
I am so sorry that happened to your bag. I was thinking of cleaning my vintage speedy 25 and a pre-loved Vernis Bedford. I am glad I saw your video, I would have been in tears. Thank you for your video and the warning.
After hearing feedback from people on this video it's my understanding that the Magic Eraser dried out the vachetta and that I should have conditioned the leather before using the Eraser. Before you clean your bag I would definitely recommend watching lots of videos and maybe doing a search for "cleaning vernis" on the Louis Vuitton Addicted Facebook group. It's always a gamble, though.
Do not ever use Mr. Clean magic eraser on your Louis Vuitton bag!!!! It will destroy your handles by over drying and striping away the natural oils in your handles. I was stupid and I regret the day I put magic eraser to my Louie bag.
LV will replace all of the vachetta. Unfortunately it will be costly. And you have to make sure that you insist that the stitching is to look as good as the original or better. When they give you the repair slip to sign write your request on that slip. That way if they mess up you will not be obligated to pay for a lousy job. My last two repair jobs left me extremely unhappy with my Chicago LV flagship store on Michigan avenue. The most recent incident was a glazing issue that needed to be redone but apparently the vachetta was unstitched to do so and then restitched together again. The stitching was so crooked and all over the place I couldn't help but stare at it in disbelief. Hopefully your store has a better repair center assigned to them. Good luck!
EddaElid At this point I don't plan to have the vachetta replaced but Id never heard about those stitching issues so thanks for the information. Wow! Sorry you had that experience.
Oh, gosh...I'm not the best one to ask. I haven't found the best solution and haven't tried many different methods so I don't want to show you the wrong things.
Autumn if their not really dirty, I wouldn't do it because I literally saw the hairline cracks start as it was drying. I don't know if it was because it was older. I have 2013 speedy too and I've decided I'm not going to touch it. Also you know that nice pretty shine they get is just gone after cleaning it...and I did condition it also and never got that original shine back
You can use a product called Urad on the vachetta to even out and help the cracking. Check out Little Mamma’s House...she has a tutorial on Urad..someone she knew had saved a bag after someone used sandpaper on the vachetta..don’t worry..I think it could help your Noe and protect it..

That explains what happened to my Vintage Speedy handles! I used magic eraser to remove the black on the handles. Not only are they still black, but they now have cracks. :( Won't do that again!

Polymer erasers are much more gentle and they still clean. just the white eraser you may pick up from an office/school supply store. I don't use them office because they canl damage the raw leather. Once the leather patina develops a gentle rub picks up dirt. Alcohol free wipes help too. Both will clean bag and not damage leather that has already had some patina or shine to it.
I cleaned the handles of a speedy 30 made in 95 that had no cracks and all I used was a little water on a cloth and as soon as it was dry it had hairline cracks all over the handles. I decided it's best not to clean them unless they are filthy
Condition clean and condition again. The eraser works but is very drying. If you use baby wipes only then you can just wipe them condition no need to condition first. The eraser is for drastic conditions and it REALLY needs to b used with a very light hand. Needless to say I only use wipes and conditioner
Oh no!! I clean these bags for people all the time. The magic eraser is only supposed to be used very sparingly. I would not use the Magic Eraser on it. Nothing will repair the cracks but I've used Cadillac lotion/conditioner to help the vachetta from being so dry. It might darken your patina a little, though.
This one was old and dirty so it needed a cleaning in my opinion. I haven't touched the vachetta on my new (almost a year old) Turenne, though. I love your videos!
It doesn't bother me. Luckily, I got that bag from eBay and didn't pay much. It's still beautiful and I don't think the cracking is noticeable to anyone unless they're inspecting it closely. I'll probably carry it until it falls apart. :)
I just uploaded a video describing my experience with the magic eraser. It completely RUINED my Speedy 30 in Damier Azur. Watch the video if you feel like, I would like to hear your opinions on the results I got.
lf you com'è have anything to loose try to put cocconut in the vachetta zone, before try to wash it with water to quit rest of the rubber (it dryes the leather) you need to moisturize your leather, more now. good Luck!!!
You can't use any of that on your vacheta. You really aren't supposed to do anything to it dear. If you must use Apple leather conditioner only. Best of luck
Autumn Beckman because Apple conditioner is to clean vacheta leathers which are not treated leathers and Cadillac is to treat car interiors and treated leather.
I don’t think leather should be cleaned with water....😞 I have saddles, and many LV bags, you have to use special leather cleaners and then condition the leather r, so it doesn’t dry out.... sorry your leather cracked.... 😱😖

I'm no expert on cleaning vachetta. My recommendation is to join the Louis Vuitton Addicted group on Facebook (if you're not already a member) and ask them. There are several people there who clean bags for other people and they can give you much better advice.
This is an old video. Before leaving comments like this for people please check more recent videos to see if the problem has been fixed....which it has...a long time ago.
Hello Autumn, I’m leaving you a comment because I do not know another way to contact you. I have a 2006 or 2007 pristine LV Noe (I’ve only carried it a few times). Please contact me if you’re interested. Thank you, Carmen
Typically I delete comments about my appearance but I don't think you mean harm so I'll reply instead. I look fabulous without makeup, too. Every woman does. I believe that people don't need makeup and that it's just a ploy for cosmetic companies to make money. We're all beautiful just as we are...as are you. Thank you for the compliment on my video.
Autumn Beckman YES! And BTW, I really appreciate you sharing your video and helping others learn from mistakes. That is a real gift and it is much appreciated. Do you have any recommendations for folks looking for Rehab videos and cleaning conditioning for untreated leather that is unpainted... Currently in process of rehabbing a vintage Michael Kors
Autumn, I couldnt have said it better myself- You are BEAUTIFUL! You do NOT need ANY makeup, you are stunning! Your reply came straight out of my own thoughts! Contact Bedo’s Leatherworks LLC, he can repair the parts of the bag!
I love watching bedo's repairs.
@@karlas6385 me too
Thanks for the vid. Subbed, my friend!
Thank you. :)
I would Condition it now.
Thanks so much for sharing; Really appreciate your time and effort x
Magic Eraser is full of abrasive chemicals. What a horrid thing to do to leather! I'm sorry this happened to you. 🤦🏻♀️
That's what I get for listening to the internet. Oh, well. I've chalked it up to a learning experience.
Ruined my speedy handles and handle holders.
Tan leather cream will improve the look.
I haven't heard of that. I'll look into it. Thanks.
Autumn Beckman hi yes it's a leather conditioner with a tan pigment in to restore the colour as well as condition the leather.
I have a Louis Vuitton and it’s got a stain on the Vachetta I tried everything to get it out and staying when I come out please please help me what should I do
I'm no expert on cleaning vachetta. My recommendation is to join the Louis Vuitton Addicted group on Facebook (if you're not already a member) and ask them. There are several people there who clean bags for other people and they can give you much better advice.
Its hard to hear you. please fix. Thank you
This is an old video. Before leaving comments like this for people please check more recent videos to see if the problem has been fixed....which it has...a long time ago.
Hello Autumn,
I’m leaving you a comment because I do not know another way to contact you.
I have a 2006 or 2007 pristine LV Noe (I’ve only carried it a few times). Please contact me if you’re interested.
Thank you,
Carmen
Thanks but I love my vintage damaged one. :)
:)
Next time use distilled water, tap water has too many minerals and will leave watermarks of not removed evenly.
Good point. Thanks.
Best cleaning is by LV direct. Sorry about your bag.
My store has told me that LV doesn't clean bags. Have you heard otherwise?
Autumn Beckman mine too! I live in Houston & they told me they didn’t clean them either. Let me know if you hear otherwise.
Nicevideo, really helpful.
Make up will make you look fabolous.
Keep it up.
I hope that you ended up being able to restore the damaged areas on your bag, by the way- did you ever do a follow up video on this one? ❤❤❤
