- Sharing this tutorial for how you can use leftover wool and dye / colour / colour it using Derwent Inktense Blocks.
In this “how to” tutorial I show you how you can wind leftover wool into smaller skeins and then easily colour it using Derwent Inktense blocks.
It’s fun, easy and a great way to save money plus with this method you can create whatever colour combinations you need for your slow stitch or slow stitching projects, including beautiful variegated yarns. The sky really is the limit!
I hope you consider giving this a go.
Here’s a link to the video where I dyed crochet yarn:

Awesome Christine 👏🏼 I enjoyed this video, what a great money saver!
Thanks Valita - glad you enjoyed 💙🧵🪡 cheers, Christine
What a brilliant & money saving idea !!! The colours are beautiful, I have lots of oddments of white / cream wool , need to save up to buy some intense blocks now lol ❤xx
Thanks Gillian - even a smaller set of inktense would work well as you can mix the colours to make more colours. Cheers, Christine 💙🧵🪡
Wonderful idea! Will give this a try.
Thanks Janet - have fun with this. Cheers, Christine 💙🧵🪡
They really are beautiful.
Thank you - it’s so good being able to make your own colour combinations. Cheers, Christine
Oh wow! This was interesting and the result was impressive!
Thanks Chrissie - it was a lot of fun. Enjoyed watching your needlebook video this evening too. Cheers, Christine 💙🧵🪡
Thank you for sharing, can't wait to have a go
Thanks Paula - have fun! Cheers, Christine
I had a go, fun and happy with results.
So happy to hear this 💙🧵🪡 cheers, Christine
Need to have a go at this have lots of neutral threads to have a go with variation is great
Thanks Helen - it works great across a variety of yarns 💙🧵🪡
Thank you Christine for your video. Well what to say here. It's a case of save up for inktense and the world is your oyster. My goodness the wool really took the colour well and the end result was amazing. I see great personalised colours for projects here but also in the end money saving.
Thanks Carol - even one of the smaller inktense sets would work great as you can mix the colours. I’ve seen some second hand sets available also that look barely used. Cheers, Christine
Fabulous Christine. I will definately use my inktense blocks to dye some wool. Thankyou for the demonstration. 😃
Thanks Gina - have fun!
Hi Christine, these turned out gorgeous! I don't have inktense blocks but I do have a set of 12 inktense pencils and might just give it a go with those when I'm able to get around again. TFS 😊
Have fun with your pencils - I’m sure they will work. If any residue is left on the fibres after drying then just give a rinse in cold water. I believe the pencils have an extra hardening ingredient in them so may be required. Cheers, Christine 💙🧵🪡
What a fascinating video Christine. Enjoy the rest of your time in Bright. xx
Thanks so much Jacqueline 💙🧵🪡 Have a wonderful weekend. Cheers, Christine
Stunning! Great idea, thank you for sharing this ❤
Thank you - have fun with this 🤗
I’ve never seen this done before! So cool 😊
Thanks so much Dawn - glad to share a new idea with you 💙🧵🪡🌈 cheers, Christine
Wonderful Christine, i used inktense to dye some amazing colours with threads last time and now will try some wool. I really enjoy your tips to save some money and just to experience the fun of experimenting. Love this idea! Thankyou ❤
Thanks Kerri - it’s a great way to get extra value out of leftover wool and our inktense 💙🧵🪡 Hope you have a lovely weekend ahead. Cheers, Christine
Such fun, used inktense but never done yarn or cotton have plans to try but well life gets in the way. Think I just need to book my day and give this a go maybe invite a few friends and have a little fun. Yep and inktense tea party 🎈. lol
Love your idea for an inktense tea party and how lovely that you can share the fun with others! Cheers, Christine 💙🧵🪡
❤❤❤absolutely wonderful video!! thanks

Very cool done floss, but wool very inspired❤thanks so much
Thanks Denny - have fun with wool. Cheers, Christine 💙🧵🪡
Now you went and did it my friend. I had been holding off buying the Derwent Inktense Blocks and now you MADE me do it. Ha Ha. I ordered 2 large skeins of silk thread to dye. I can't wait to get them and try your dying method. Thank you so much my friend. Big hugs.
Hello lovely Juanette - I think you will find the blocks really useful - just be sure to fully activate the pigments with water and if any residue remains them give a rinse with cold water after drying. Cheers, Christine
@@createandcraftwithchristine I got my 72 Derwent blocks today and a bulk order of mulberry silk thread. I can't wait to start dyeing some threads. Once again thank you so much for your tutorial on how to do it.
@@JuanettesCraftingCorner so looking forward to seeing what you create 🤗
Your threads are really lovely Christine, I have just the pencils, will have a play and see if they work.
Hi Elsie - I’m sure the pencils will work great too. Have fun! Cheers, Christine 💙🧵🪡
Those colours are beautiful Christine🤗. I wonder if Santa is paying attention🤔🤭😂 A very helpful video 🦋🌻💖
Thanks Trish. I hope Santa is paying good attention as you are definitely on the Nice list 🤗 cheers, Christine
@@createandcraftwithchristine 😊🥰 thanks Christine🌻🦋
What a wonderful video. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing technique. I'll be going to get some yarn now to try this. Thanks again 😊
Thanks Tammy - have fun experimenting. Cheers, Christine
Oh my, I have just remembered that I have some fabric paints, I canteen some buying of silk threads and silk so that I can dye it for my projects. Totally forgot I have the dyes as I have not done silk painting for a long time. Let's hope they are still usable.x
Have fun and look forward to hearing how you go 💙🧵🪡
They look fantastic. 😊
Thanks so much Vanessa 🤗 cheers, Christine 💙🧵🪡
Just gorgeous Christine ❤
Thanks Karen - such fun seeing how these experiments turn out 🤗
What a great idea - the colours are fab. I’ve only got a small set of inktense pencils, but going to give it a go - thanks for showing this 💛😊🌼
Thanks Sally - it’s great fun and lovely to have your own bespokecolour combos. Just make sure the pigment is fully activated by water - if any residue remains after it dries suggest giving a rinse in cold water to remove residue and then redry it. I believe the pencils have an extra additive to make them firmer. Will be interested to hear how you go. Cheers, Christine 💙🧵🪡
@@createandcraftwithchristine thanks for the tips Christine, I will let you know how I get on 😊
They are gorgeous 👍🧡💐
Thanks so much Anita 💙🧵🪡
Beautiful colours!
Thanks Linda - love being able to customise my colours 🤗
Have never seen this done before. after yarn dries can it be washed? Love it❤
Hi Phyllis - I generally don’t wash my slow stitch pieces so suggest doing some experiments. Here’s what Derwent advises re fabric which I assume would apply to other fibres: ‘Inktense only becomes permanent if all colour is washed out fully and no remaining pencil/block/paint marks are left. Any remaining pencil marks will run. Any washing should be done by hand, without any detergent or washing powder and should be done in a cool temperature such as 86 degrees Fahrenheit.’ Regards, Christine
Wow that is awesome!!
Thanks Stephanie 🤗
@@createandcraftwithchristine So happy you shared this technique. Those blocks have been on my wish list and I'm bumping them up to the top! I so want to try this. I use hand dyed wool yarn in so many of my projects. I prefer wool. Would love to create my own coloring like you have. If I eventually get a video up- when I can afford the blocks-I'll tag you and link people to your channel. Your work is so inspiring! ❤️
They look really gorgeous Christine, what a great way to use the odds and ends of plain light coloured wool, I 'm sure I have loads of that knocking around. It's sucha lovely range of colours in that set, and you've really made very good use of it - was it only last Christmas you got that? The variegation you've got is so pretty, you'd expect these to be pretty expensive wouldn't you? I don't know if I missed you saying cos I've been busy crafting and watching along, but do they work the same on synthetic as they do on wool?
Hi Annie - really loved what we can do with Inktense. I suspect the fibres I got from the op shop may have had at least one synthetic blend in them but can’t be sure, so can’t say that it would definitely work on synthetics. Will have to try again when back home. Cheers, Christine 💙🧵🪡
That’s a fascinating process! I didn’t know you could use inktense like that - somehow the YT gremlins didn’t tell me about your previous videos! 😂
I’m wondering in the colours would stay more intense if you used soda ash as a fixer? And I’m also thinking maybe I could colour sashiko thread using the same process…? 🤔 The finished threads are still very vibrant! I love those colours
I think this would work great on sashiko thread. I’m not sure about soda ash - let me know if you experiment 🤗 cheers, Christine
Oooo. How about dyeing silk ribbon too?
Hi Mary - yes, that works great too. Will share a video soon 🤗
I wonder if the intense would dye synthetics. If not. I have a lot of alcohol based inks which would. Thank you so much for the inspiration!!
Thanks Jackie - have fun playing! Cheers, Christine 💙🧵🪡
Beautiful! Would this work on crochet cotton too?
Hi Teri - I have used this same method on crochet threads also with great success: th-cam.com/video/DgZJiHk7btA/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared cheers, Christine 💙🧵🪡
Hi Christine thanks for this video, great idea. It was all your fault 😂, after watching you dye the crochet threads I had to get the inktense blocks and have dyed quite a lot of the cottons. I have crocheted little hearts and flowers with some of them and also done embroidery. I noticed some colour came off on my fingers. I let them dry naturally when I had dyed the cottons. Do you think I should heat set them somehow?
Hi Helen - if you’re ending up with excess pigment it may be that there is some pigment that wasn’t fully activated by water. You could give them a quick rinse in fresh water after drying to wash off any excess. Derwent does recommend heat setting also when using on fabric so not a bad idea to give them blast with the hairdryer or dry in the hot sun (I don’t think the sun should impact the colours too much). Cheers and have fun, Christine 💙🧵🪡
@@createandcraftwithchristine thanks Christine I will try that.
So beautiful, I’ll definitely give this a try!❤ Do you heat set this so it’s colorfast once it’s dried?
Hi Paula - yes that’s a good idea to do but also make sure your inktense is fully dissolved in water as that’s important for the colour to hold. Cheers, Christine 💙🧵🪡
@@createandcraftwithchristine thank you so much! 💕
How long in the dryer? So the wool doesn’t felt? ❤
I gave mine a short burst while I watched it as I wanted it dried so I could finish my video - it’s probably safer to air dry in the sun. You could give them a quick iron or hairdryer blast instead. Cheers, Christine
