      Agreed, the facts are the facts but certain parts of the show are fiction for storyline. Also, I don't think they got it wrong with house names. Evangelista, Abundance, Ferocity, Wintour were all fictitious houses with ferocious members. If you know ballroom history you can tell Electra is based on Crystal n Pepper Labeija, Candy was based on Venus Xtavaganza, Angel was based on Octavia St Laurent and etc. the houses and characters didn't need to be factual they were all inspired by factual people but written as a work of fiction.

      @@willahmena9149 Oh without a doubt Elektra portrays Crystal Labaija.

    • @idcook
      @idcook 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@yrg9405 In truth, the character, Elektra, is rather a mere shadow of Chrystal Labeija.
      If threatened, Crystal would beat a straight mans’ ass, a wannabe thug pimp or anybody else, in the middle of Broadway if it came to that.
      This was true of a number of Queens back in the day. I know, I saw it happen more than once. After witnessing this the first time I vowed to NEVER get into an altercation of any kind with any of them. Contrary to commonly held beliefs, trans people tend to be ferocious fighters when they decide they have to fight.

    Love Pose! As someone who was around the house/ball scene in NYC late 70s/early 80s I'd say they got it right as much as a fictional TV show can (because they actually got advice and guidance from people IN the scene!). There are moments where the actors look a little too clean, put together, with good skin and teeth... which just isn't always the reality for these kids. Many live(d) outside at least part of the time, and turned tricks on the piers and in cars on West Side Highway. Ya don't always step away from that with clean clothes, smooth skin, and a Colgate smile. But otherwise it's very accurate. I love that they portray the houses as they are - survival families, not just performance troupes!

      In the new season, there seemed to be a shift in ball culture in 1994-95. Pray Tell mentioned that it wasn’t the same anymore, if you don’t mind me asking, would you say that was true?

      Can you tell me more about ball culture etc. I'd rather learn from you than the media.

    • @tatsf
      @tatsf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      @@avant-garde2.028 Back in the late 70s/early 80s it was definitely very survival-oriented for many of the members of the houses. Pose was accurate in portraying that. However, many mothers and/or fathers of the houses could not afford to pay for large spacious places for their house and all of the bills and expenses for their children, so scraping by as best one can was a way of life for many and often all members were required to contribute what they could (even if that was a small amount, food stamps, etc). Pose also references the reality of "working the piers for coins". Later in the 90s the houses and balls began to really focus on HIV education and fundraising for community orgs in a way that connected them to a larger community in a different way than earlier.

      Not to mention AZT often caused symptoms worse than AIDS itself and there was no conclusive evidence at the time it prolonged the life of the person taking it. So even if someone was lucky enough to get AZT, there’s no way to be sure it wouldn’t cause them to deteriorate faster because of debilitating side effects, let alone help them live any longer. It really was a game of Russian roulette.

    The part about AZT is not fully accurate in the context of the show. Blanca doesn’t have access to AZT until season 2, when she finds out that her illness has progressed to full blown AIDS. At that point, Nurse Judy told her about how richer patients that were at end stage would donate their meds to less fortunate and healthier people, which is how Blanca and Pray Tell were able to get on medication. It happens in the episode where Candy is murdered.
    Speaking of which, I do wish the topic of the murders of trans women was discussed in the video, as it is very real, and sadly ongoing as of 2021. That, and the violence towards Trans women depicted in the episode Cocoon/Butterfly, where Electra has to dispose of that body, and they discuss why going to the police wasn’t an option. That was a very real occurrence that happened to Dorian Corey, whom was prominently featured in Paris is Burning. Otherwise, nice video.

    I loved Pose. As it has come to an end I already miss it. I appreciate the storylines that were based on true events: Venus Estravaganza's murder & Candy's murder. The mummified body in Electra's closet. I wish there was more focus on each element of vogue and vast categories of the ballroom.

    They missed the part where Elektra had that trick die and dr orlando put him in a suitcase and it was stashed in a closet. There was a story of a drag queen who died and when they were cleaning out her belongings they opened her closet which smelled and opened up a suitcase to find a corpse. It was assumed it was either a fan or trick gone bad.

    In other words, they got it pretty much all right. Which is what i would have expected. No, it's not technically a documentary in that the actual people are fictional, but the whole point of the series was to show what that world was like, so of course it matters whether they got it right or wrong.

    As far as the house names, I think most of the main house names (Extravaganza and Lebaja) are patented, so the show probably came up with fictional house names. Is it necessarily wrong? I don't think so, just a thought.

    Maybe "right" and "wrong" aren't exactly accurate, but I took it to mean "fact" or "fiction", which I love knowing about tv shows and movies. I wasn't bothered. So I appreciated this video, as it's definitely exciting to feel transported back in time. (Been watching "Black Monday" and that's another show that's fun to compare with real life culture and events of the 1980s.)
    And yes, if the information (in this video) came from other sources, then of course cite them. But I now am inspired to watch the series "Pose". So this video was effective.
    And I appreciate all the folks who were there way-back-when chiming in in the comments.
    I didn't know that reading and voguing had been around so long; I feel foolish for thinking that Madonna invented Voguing. 🤦🏽‍♀️

    • @AMae016
      @AMae016 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree. I also interpreted 'right' and 'wrong' more as 'fact' or 'fiction'. I don't think Ms Mojo's intent was necessarily to teach or inform but to compare the 'Hollywood' version to the actual event(s) to see if the scenes depicted adhered to (ie 'right') or deviated from (ie 'wrong') historical facts...(eg. 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ' vs Tate murders).
      Sorry you had to find out about vouging and Madonna that way tho 😢 🤣🤣

      I took this video as a way to teach people who aren’t familiar with ball culture what is true and what isn’t in the show “Pose.” It’s not a critique of the people who created it for being right or wrong, but a way to educate the uninitiated (read straight, white, cis people) on the actual truth of what happened during this era. Anyone who knows anything about ball culture or was alive in the 80s/90s knows the T, right?

      @@Judges4MWarriorWoman Absolutely! I never tried to imply your feelings upon watching this video aren’t valid. I only wanted to provide a differing perspective in reference to the intended purpose of the video. The only issues that were deemed “wrong” were the usage of House names, AZT availability, and the “death-in” protests. 7/10 were a celebration of what was “right.” The video simply points out inaccurate aspects of “Pose” but in a very limited scope; the criticisms are not of creativity, but rather the veracity of specific issues that might be interpreted as fact. Letting the uninformed know the truth that “Evangelista” and “Abundance” were not real House names doesn’t detract from the show’s creative brilliance. Accurately depicting the situation regarding AZT in the late 80s and further explaining what happened during ACT UP protests aren’t an affront to POC creativity. Anytime you present the ignorant with truth it is definitely a good thing, in my opinion. It’s not always a revisionist, culturally insensitive critique worthy of derision. Especially considering Miss Mojo has a plethora of videos of this nature illuminating the inaccuracies of all types of content created by all types of people.

    Watching this show has educated so many queer youths (including myself who grew up in the 90s/00s) in the uk and I had no idea about any of our history. For a fictional series; there were so many educational moments that reinforce why we celebrate prides and continue to fight. As I say to those who ask “why do we need a pride” this is a prime example of “Look how far we’ve come and yet we still have a long way to go” 💛🏳️‍🌈

    A fairly good list. However, the pointed use of "Ballroom" as opposed to "Trans" culture, somewhat obscures deeper truths of the community. To my mind, use of Ballroom in the series only serves to provide upbeat eye-candy to what would otherwise be an endless presentation of an ever-embattled, severely misunderstood part of the human family.
    While it’s true that the entire gay community has been active in the still on-going fight for justice and their right to exist, when push comes to shove, the bulwark in all such activism was and remains the trans community which - often reviled by gay men in particular - has been traditionally marginalized and edged out of the limelight in lieu of a belief that non-gays will better relate to closeted and what most non-gays regard as 'non-flamboyant' gays. i.e.- Closet gays.
    Premier among these are, of course, trans people, closely followed and supported by drag queens and kings, so-called, 'out' and gays people regard as openly self-expressive.
    These were always the loudest and proudest defenders of the culture and, not quite ironically, the people most readily sacrificed with every effort to gain their rights as citizens due equal consideration on all fronts within the society.
    Today, most people have little idea that a considerable portion of the language and visual stylings they use to infer their individualism is, in fact, directly borne from the common language and extreme fashion consciousness used within trans communities both then and now.
    Since the early successes of social protests in America, the trans community, in particular, has lead the way in influence of near every aspect of popular culture that exists today.
