"I wouldn't want to be labeled...as having to play free all the time...because I enjoy playing structured music, too...because the freedom is within yourself, not within the music." Thank you for this wonderful interview.
Very good comment. Glad you liked the interview. Got to see him play many times. He was always creative, engaged, entertaining and masterful. Not only a great musician, but also an excellent composer. His timing, touch, and spacing of the notes was outstanding.
@@danmccloskyradiointerviews Bobby went to my high school John Muir in Pasadena Ca… he was 3 years ahead of me. A funny little story… one day in about 1962 or 63 I was on my way home from school on the Lincoln Ave. bus quietly reading my latest Down Beat magazine featuring Bobby when an elderly lady sitting next to me exclaimed “ is that Bobby ?!” I use to hear him playing and practicing all the time at night! And had a short conversation with her. I also use to see the great bassist Albert Stinson on the same bus. I once saw him in the heat of the summer wearing a heavy overcoat looking very stoned his eyes all bloodshot. I know they did that great album together “Oblique” with Joe Chambers and Herbie Hancock….Anyhow a little bit of trivia. Once again thank you for the great insight into a master musician of our time!

Great interview. Thank you Dan!!
Thanks very much. He was such a great player, such a great composer, entertainer and performer. I always loved to hear him speak during performances.
