Probably one of the better animated dogfights in this show imho. The fact that you can clearly see Kitori's F1 doing a high yo-yo to use her speed and momentum to get behind the Mig. The camera angle following the F1 as she rolls back behind the Mig is wonderful too. The camera angles in this F1 vs Mig21 fight alone is probably one if not the only times Area-88 demonstrates understanding of BFM and camera work. I mean they probably do, but because of the low budget it doesn't come across.
This was certainly an interesting anime In the English Dub, they brought in a military correspondant to help with getting brevity codes and such right, which is sorely missed in the OVAs and Manga

And while the C models were effective in Iraq they were mostly doing hellfire runs. A couple of shilkas would knock them out of the sky. Manpads will eat them alive. Despite its bombastic reputation of returning tailless after a random 23mm hit, its "flying tank" moniker is overrated. Sure the bathtub is armoured, but not everything else. The only way for CAS to work in the age of proliferated air defense is stand-off weapons. F-16s can do that. If anything the moment a couple of A-10s came back with bitten off tails from 23mm hits they began doing hellfire runs instead. And for low-cost counterinsurgency? A-10Cs are actually expensive to operate, not to mention having an entirely niche plane when a Super Tucano can do the job well. I don't know where you get your circlejerk from (probably Discovery Channel and CNN and reformer Pierre Sprey garbage), but this ain't it chief.
A-4 cruises at roughly the same speed as a Mig and a Tomcat, and since most ACM takes place at subsonic speeds, the A-4 has an upper edge with mobility. The F-14 and Mig-21 however, are interceptors, and thus can push to higher speeds when needed (at the expense of maneuvrability)
A-4 lacks the engine power and energy retention to do sustained combat. F-4E however has wing slats that help it increase it's turn rate and hold energy and MiG21 has a lot of engine power and nose authority, besides that both of these supersonics are, well, supersonics, that can disengage at any time and send a missile anytime they want.

The MIG-21 uses a tailed delta wing and the Mirage a croped delta ... the MIG-21 has better performance in high altitude but the F-1 out-turns the 21 in sustained turn rate.. wich means that with same engine the F-1 would have the advantage.. however at high altitude the delta of the 21 might change things a bit. The F-1 also has better avionics .. Think that when the F-1 was introduced it had like a 40% better performance in turn and energy retention than the Mirage III/V . The Mirage 2000 using a delta and better performance than the F-1 was posible thanks to fly-by-wire and computers. Also Spain for example kept using the F-1 until recently alongside planes like the F-18 and the Eurofighter..and even now they were being considered to buy by Argentine
Area 88 was never the ultimate in realism, just check (in both the old OVAs and in the new series) the "fangs" or what I liked to call "one side of a cage" and how the planes got through by folding their wings in mid-air (...) and not getting damaged. :P
lol a bvr engagement with that many planes bunched up??!! Long range radar displays aircraft as blips, or dashed lines across the HUD (Russian). Well i guess she had state of the art technology labeling the migs from the harrier, a-4, and tomcat. NICE!

Indeed, one of the points why i dont like this show is.. although it is less action packed.. why woulndt they use BVR mode? o.o.. instead of going in a close as hell dog fight.. they could have taken em out A LONG TIME AGO.. xD
@@sparrowlt well, I’m more used to seeing a M-2000 when I hear the word “Mirage” and the Mitsubishi F-1 licence built F-16 when I hear “F1” in terms of aviation and the . Plus in my defence, I’ve never heard of a F-1 Mirage before. Not that I’m trying to make an excuse
@@lt_darkseekerantique3911 Its ok.. its a Mirage F-1 ..its one of the Mirage line of fighters and the only one to have an actual tail instead of a tailless delta wing.. it was more manevorable than the Mirage III/V.. Eventually Dassault went back to the Delta wing with the 2000 because fly-by-wire allowed them to overcome the delta wing shortcomings while taking advantage of its pluses
