To be fair, flying low can help avoid being attacked by SAMs. They can't shoot what they can't 'see' after all.

they mention before that the base is well protected by heavy SAM activity.. in the original they even considered the base wouldnt have a fighter patrol nearby due to the high density SAM defense they had.. thats why they had to go in low and why the base used the desert fang wall thing to close any gaps
