    Just a couple of tips , chickens can fly about 25 feet so they will just jump over the pond ( and if the pond is deep the chickens can drown as they can't swim ) .
    And also no fences in there coop are not chicken proof they can just jump over them .
    And if you put plants growing on that little wood climbing square thing then the chickens will just eat that .
    And your Garden will turn into a dusty mess over time incase you think that it's gonna stay grassy .
    I just want to tell you because I want your chickens to be safe and I have chickens as well so I know what I am on about . Ps love your horses and your channel and it will be interesting now that you are going to have chickens !

      This is good advice, I second it. We had a chicken coop in the barn and it was open at the top. All the chickens would escape and walk on top of the stalls and fall in and around them daily. It got really dangerous so we moved them to a stall. They are slippery! We let them out in the summertime and have to use brooms to get them back. I can see them sitting on top of the fences that Matt has built. I’m interested to see how it will turn out. Very exciting!!

      I agree! Fences are way too short even if you clip their wings. They are just going to go through the slats on the picket fence, looks nice, but he needs to at least put a predatory fence up all around and on top, there are a few predatory birds out there. If that set up was on my farm, there wouldn't be any chickens left after the predators found them, which on my farm would be the next day.

    Put an eave/gutter on the low end of the little roof and collect the water that runs off it into some sort of low container (with an overflow piped to the pond, perhaps). That will take care of some of the mud in your chicken run and make a water source for your chickens to drink from.

    You will love how fast chickens learn to look to you for petting. Put some kind of fold out chairs down there so you can grab a hen and pet her on your lap awhile. They will go to sleep! After the first time being handled they quickly get more and more confident being touched and trained. They make a wide variety of lovely noises. A healthy hen will keep herself clean. They are easy pets. They poop a lot and you should probably read some chicken raising books or magazines to learn the basics.
    Unfortunately the fence looks low enough for a fox to jump and a chicken to fly out of. If you get full size chicken breeds and not small Bantams then when they are full size the hawks will not attack as much. Good luck, the henhouse looks lovely so far. If you use square wood pieces for perches, round the ard edges or they will cut into the feet.

  • @lizsurbanroost3624
    @lizsurbanroost3624 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Congrats on your future chickens!
    I do have suggestions for you, I like that your coop is open and airy looking, make sure you put hardware cloth on all the windows and that the windows actually work cause chickens do better in cool weather then hot and having an oven for a coop is not good for them. For winter.... NO HEAT LAMPS. Make sure your coop is well ventilated and keep it clean and dry. Using droppings boards and sand for litter is a great way to keep it clean, daily cleaning is best.
    Don't keep their food and water in the coop, food will attract rodents and flies and water will create moisture you don't want (especially in winter).
    I highly recommend getting a Grandpas Feeder for their feed, look it up on Amazon, they are amazing and though expensive at first they will pay for themselves in feed not wasted very quickly.
    I would recommend adding cover to your run so the girls have somewhere to hide from hawks and other predators if your not going to do a fully enclosed run.
    For how many chickens you get, I would recommend starting with about 6-8, since your getting them for eggs and pets you will be best starting at that number and then you will have more space to add to your flock in a year or two when your birds start slowing down with the laying.
    Doing research on what breeds do best for your area is a good idea for making sure you get breeds that handle your cold and heat.
    I highly recommend getting the book The Chicken Chick's Guide to Backyard Chickens, you can get it on Amazon too, if saved my Easter Egger's life when she got sick I was able to very quickly find out what was wrong and helped her. The book has pretty much everything you need to know on care and more.
    Hope you read this ;)
    Can't wait to see your new fluffy butts!

    If you tie wire from the ceiling in the coop and add like a fish hook to the bottom of the wire you can then put leftover lettuce and vegetables for the chickens to pack at xx

  • @bunniesbunniesbunnie
    @bunniesbunniesbunnie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    also I'm a chicken person (I raise literally thousands per year): if you can find radiant heat panels to warm chicks (if you're getting chicks) instead of heat bulbs, it's easier on them. It lends to fewer cases of pasty butt and other issues, and it's more "natural" for them. If you want a few good guardian birds, grab some guinea fowl to mix in with the chickens. They'll SCREAM about any hawks or foxes and the hens will learn to run into the coop. Or get a nice big rooster (an easter egger, aracauna, any orpington, or a speckled sussex are all wonderfully calm roosters with people and hellbeasts with predators).
    If you fellas want any more info hmu I'll gladly help out.

    Don't know if you guys already are going to do this but chickens prefer to sleep on higher places so in the little house y'all made put stick at different heights so they can sleep on them. As well, a place with dirt preferably so they can take dust baths. A chicken dust bath helps to remove excess oil, as well as external parasites like lice and mites. When y'all buy chicken I imagine they will recommend you the breeds you want, but the best chicken breeds to lay eggs are either the leghorns which lay white eggs or the Rhode island reds which lay brown eggs, the color of the egg doesn't do anything to the taste of the egg lol.

    Chicken are incredible rewarding pets, you will love them! here a few thoughts - choose breeds that are not likely to fly. leghorns, laying hybrids, etc, will be able to get over your fencing in no time. dual purpose chicken breeds will be less likely to fly, but may not lay as well as the typical layer. depending on how many chicken you get, your grass will be gone sooner or later. you could choose to let them free range during the day, our chicken browse the whole day in the pastures between horses, ponies and goats, and tuck themselves in back in their coop at night. Our favorite breed on the farm is the Swedish Flower Hen, great layers for years to come, they are beautiful and each one is unique, alert about predators and friendly and curious towards their people

    Also make sure you have a watering source that they cannot drown in, like the pond. And that the coop is insulated for the winter, because of the low °C you get. If you still want some grass in the area, then put in a sandbox so they can take a dust bath to help keep their feathers healthy. Is that correct Animal crazy girl 13? Best Wishes and stay healthy from Ontario, Canada, Jenn.

    And 1 tip... Make your fencing higher.. We used to have chickens and some had no problem clearing a 1.60m fence.. And 1 chicken was dead set of digging it's way out of the pen..
    I'm never going to forget that time my mom bought almost fully incubated eggs and placed them in the nestbox.. But forgot to replace the chickenfenc with the larger holes for the type with the smaller holes in them.. You can fill in what happened a few weeks after the eggs hatched... We lived on a property pretty similar to yours in the way that we had a big house, 4 stables, 1,5 hectares of field and a riding arena.. We had 3 cats, 2 dogs, 13 chickens and 3 horses.. One day I heard a lot of commotion outside after my mom let the dogs outside.. The baby chickens hopped trough the holes in the fence and were being chased by the cats which were being chased by the dogs who were being chased by my mom... I've never laughed so hard in my life! (until I went to help to try to catch the loose chickens.. Than I wasn't laughing anymore because those little things can run remarkably fast on those tiny little legs🙈)

    Beautiful chicken coop. The chickens can and will fly out when they run out of grass, but they will go back in at night. As for the climbing plants, cover them in netting to protect them while they grow, the chickens will destroy them. I love your idea of planters around the outside, definitly plant things like lavender, mint, and other herbs that flies and mosquitoes hate. You could cut off the top of a small tree and bury it in the outside area to give your chickens somewhere to roost outside as well, I recently did that and my chickens love it.

  • @bobbistevens746
    @bobbistevens746 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your going to need to plan for the flowers your planting they will dig in them and destroy the beds. Also might make a couple *pits* to put sand for them to have dust baths otherside the rest will be holes everywhere (one under the lean to would be nice. Different sized and heights on the night roosts, that way each can choose which is most comfortable for them

  • @bobowa.
    @bobowa. 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Have to make sure the coop is easy to clean and spray for red mite, the chickens will also destroy all your plants. We let ours go free range as it's much easier and they never leave. Means there's no issues with them flying out! Also you need blinds in the windows as if they are in the coop when it's getting light they can attack each other!!

  • @Mia-ul9mb
    @Mia-ul9mb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I would start with only 6 or 7 chickens as they might turn the beautiful gras into mud very quickly if they’re too many and add some sand, they love lying in sand. For the little chicken door into the house there is some electric door which goes up and down by itself so you won’t need to go all the time to open and close it.
    And why do you not want them to explore the whole garden? Train them first to lay their eggs in the house and then they will always go there to kay eggs

    Here in Australia our chickens free range, and they always go back at night. Your set up is okay,some fox might try and get in under the fence. And some chickens will be adventurous and get out, but will come back in just before dusk. I think you keep them locked in the coop to start with for a few days so they learn that is where they come home to. Nothing like home grown eggs, great work guys!

    You don't have predators because well, they have nothing to eat on your property.
    With chickens, now you'll have hawks, foxes and all the critters.
    If predator really gets bad, you can get a guard geese ! They can be awesome 😉
    Predators WILL dig under your outside fence, better be safe than sorry (and not having to fix the holes later) and bury it deep forming a L with the bottom part. That way when the predator dig all its going to find is a fence and it won't be able to go throught.
    For the floor of the coop, put a cheap linoleum with the edges coming up a little on top of that wood floor, easier to clean and more durable. That way when water is spilled (it will be at some point), it won't damage the floor and the bedding will absorb it.
    Use a deep bedding so that you won't have to clean the coop every week. This keeps it fresh an clean and is low maintenance. It only takes a few mins every day to maintain and once every months (or less depending on the number of chickens) you can clean the whole thing.
    Put the feeder and water on something (bricks, pieces of wood, anything) because chickens tend to scratch and they can knock it over that way.
    Make sure you have enough perches (or is it called roost ?) for all your chickens, the chickens lower in the hierachy (also called pecking order for chickens) sleep lower than the higher ones.
    For the nesting boxes i recommend you build them in a way that they are attached to the side of the building, "sticking out". That way all you have to do is lift a board to acces the eggs. And they won't take up any space inside that could be used for perches.

    I love the look of the chicken coop. We did the same thing in taking a garden shed but chickens love to jump and fly to taller places and to jump over things. I also suggest building something for them to perch on we just used some PVC pipe and they love to sit on it. Be very careful where and what you plant because chickens love to tear it up and take dirt baths. But for the most part they just do them.

    Tip,
    Put down like plastic flooring Linoleum in the cool. Then your bedding. So you can clean it much more easy!
    Best is if you take a stick of a tree so they can find relieve on there feet on different spots. Then they will never get bumblefeet. Don't take a square one from the store.

Becky teaches about chickens and which breeds to get and which breeds not to get and how to care for the chickens... she tells exactly what to feed them to get the most eggs and she talks a lot about food grade diatomaceous earth which is very good to keep parasites out of your chickens and all of your animals and even humans.. she has a special video on caring for your baby chicks to make sure they live. I highly recommend her I've watched a lot of her videos. And just a shout out to you and Jesse... Look forward to seeing your baby chickens... may God bless you and keep you through all of this craziness in our world....keep the videos coming... In our area (Germany) we have a lot of birds which could go for chickens, especially the smaller kinds or younger chickens. So it is best to put either a net on top (which is what we have) or give them plenty stuff to hide underneath, like bushes etc.

    That's wonderful. Add nesting boxes with plenty of woodshavings and chickens need roosts to sleep on at night. If they jump the fencing, you will have to clip the flight feathers. Get someone at the feed store to show you. Also grain with plenty of grit added. The people at the feed store can advise. Ducks would be cute for the pond. Enjoy your new friends.

    Yay, chickens! I used to own a pastured poultry business, so I do know a bit about them. My best advice is to measure your square footage both inside the hen house and in the yard. Chickens need 2-3 square feet (American measurements) inside, and 8-10 square feet outside, but more is even better. The number of square feet available is going to dictate how many chickens you should purchase. And remember to measure the hen house with the waterer and feeder in place because they can be rather large.
    Please rethink your fence. It's lovely, but highly impractical. Including the pond, however, was a great idea. Chickens are designed by nature to eat bugs and ponds attract lots of bugs. The floodlights, however, are not such a great idea. Chickens are also flighty by nature and it doesn't take much to throw them off laying. Suddenly turning on bright lights at night, if there are windows facing those lights, and it looks like there is one, could cause your hens to go off laying.
    Finally, if you have rats in the Netherlands, expect to see them at some point. Rats can cause a myriad of problems. I suggest this short article with some great tips for keeping them at bay. In general, you need to predator-proof the whole space or you soon won't have any chickens left. While you are still under construction is a good time to implement some of these strategies.: www.backyardchickencoops.com.au/blogs/learning-centre/predator-profile-rats
    Have fun and enjoy your newest family members. And Jesse, if you do get that garden you want, the hens will be happy picking bugs off your plants.

    You can let your chickens roam the property as they will return to their coop at night and also to lay their eggs. We just nailed milk crates to the wall and pop a little hay in for them to lay in which are good because they can see out and they have ventilation. Make sure you install a perch (2” in diameter) for them to sleep on up off the ground. Yey chickens! Rhode Island’s grow the fastest and are good layers.

    We have chicken as well and only knee high fences. We avoid them escaping by clipping only one side of their wings so when they try to fly they can only fly in a circle. That works really well for us. And the Fox problem can be minimised by having an automatically closing door, controlled by a light sensitive sensor. Chicken are pretty accurate when it comes to being in „bed“ before sunset and the door can close after them. That way you can avoid foxes who are mostly active in the night.

  • @Trapezius8oblique
    @Trapezius8oblique 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great job building, and a nice idea of course but here is something to consider...... chickens can and will fly straight over the fence once big enough when they have eaten and scratched all of your grass down to dirt. Chickens can’t swim and if they get scared from a predator or horse they may fly accidentally straight into the pond, and drown. If they get wet and cold they will die. Birds of prey are a major concern as well if you have them. Chickens are a lot of work. They need shrubs under which to hide and feel safe. They catch diseases which have to be treated. The pond would be a better place for ducks they will make use of the pond and love it, but once again they make a mess over time and it will need cleaning up and if not it will smell to high heaven. But the mess is good fertiliser for the garden once composted correctly. I hope this helps guys.

  • @melcca8178
    @melcca8178 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you have a breed of chickens already picked out. If not, you could look into silky fowls. They will be unable to escape the fence because they can’t fly and they are great at raising chicks, if your interested in that. There are also breeds that lay colourful eggs (green,blue,chocolate/maroon...). That’s pretty fun.
    A suggestion from me would be some more hiding spots. It’s pretty sad when your chickens get killed by predatory birds. Oh and last thing: don’t forget a sand bath. It will keep them nice and healthy.
    The chickens will make you really happy.Its so calming watching them. I wish you good luck and lots of fun💕

    You need to clip their left hand side wing flight feathers to stop them flying. As the egg they produce starts at the front of the bird slightly to the right, clipping flight feathers on the left overbalances them. Watch out for mites, dust their bedding with mite powder, scaly leg is another problem they can have. For firm shells, add either a protein powder to their pellets, or give them oyster shell in a separate feeder, but don’t let that get wet! I add Apple cider vinegar to the water but only if it’s a plastic container. It helps with their internal health. My girls love mealworms and they follow me everywhere in the hopes of getting some! They also love greens like kale. If you get any hen pecking going on, separate the culprit for a while till they settle. Watch out for rats, I know you’ve already had a problem there...where there are hens, there are usually rats! Good luck, they all become characters after a while!

    That is a chicken *palace*!!! Your ladies are going to be so comfy, I bet you'll be living off omelettes in no time!
    You're going to need to net in the whole area with chicken wire or something suitable, though. Your fence won't keep chickens in, and neither will the pond. Friends of mine netted their rather large chook run with a cyclone wire 'roof' that covered nearly a quarter of an acre. Then they grew grape vines over it. It gave the chickens a lovely protected area with the added bonus of sweet grapes. Also, foxes will dig to get your chooks. You might consider burying some chicken wire under the ground around the outside of the chook run, or, just pin it to the ground with tent pins or heavy rocks.
    Name suggestions: Cheryl, Beryl, Merrill, Feral, Peril, Narelle, Darelle, Terelle, Sharelle, Giselle. Kath, Kim, Sharon and Epponee Rae. Also, Andalucia, Lusitania, Shetlandia, Oldenburgia, Hanoveria, Frisiana, Trakhenia... you get the drift. ;)
    Regarding Steve's ensemble: there are no words to describe how seductive and sultry he looks in his large rubber nappypants! (You might gently ask him if he's ever had a concept of 'a waistband'). Next video, I need to see all three of you dressed in them please. In the pond.
    You could put swamp irises and other wetland plants in and around the pond - and add a few suitable fish to eat the mosquito wrigglers (dunno what's best in the Netherlands - in Oz, we'd use gambusias). For your climbing plant, you could try garden peas or snowpeas. The plants are pretty and the chooks could eat the peas. Also, have you considered adding some ducks, quail or geese to the mix? Geese make great guard animals, although they might scare the horses... and the dogs...
    Just a few thoughts. LOVING your work ethic!

    Good luck on keeping those chicken inside that fence. LOL. They need a way taller one with roofing. You also have to dig the netting down into ground because they dig after worms and make holes to do their dust bath. Rats can be a problem too because the chickens need to have food available throughout the day. A must is also grit so they can digest the food. It's an idea to make a spot with some sand where you can add it.

  • @rapturesrevenge
    @rapturesrevenge 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding chickens, you want to fully enclose the run with taller chickenwire, and you need to put netting up top. Your chicken wire should ideally be 2 meters tall. You'll also want to bury it about 1 meter down in the ground and reinforce it with rocks around the perimeter to discourage foxes and to keep the chickens from digging under the wire.

    Chickens are perfect for a horse area.
    Free range them in the paddocks - they eat bugs! They also go and scratch through the horse poop and eat the flies, worms etc... but as they scratch it, they break it up. Whole poop kills the grass underneath, broken and spread allows it to become fertilizer....

    Matt you need nesting boxes for them to lay in . You can get some ducks for there eggs also . If your chickens are happy they will not fly over your pound . And if you let them our during he day they eat all the bugs in your yard and keep so Let them roam is a good thing and they will fertilized your yard . and if they went in with the horses that would be good too This is all done after they grow up . if you feed them good and FRESH WATER EVERY DAY IS VERY IMPORTATION AND GOOD FOOD

  • @lydiabosley9152
    @lydiabosley9152 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I suggest Silver-laced Wyandotts if you want chickens very pretty to look at! (You can google images of chickens to see which ones you like the best) Rhode Island Reds may be best for egg-laying. Definitely plan on plenty of perching inside the coop, but arrange them toward the outer perimeter so that you can stand in the center to do raking/cleaning/replacing of straw, shavings, or whatever you will have on the floor to absorb their droppings and to line their nest-boxes. As others have said, most chickens can/will fly so a low fence will not contain them. you may want/need to arrange some overhead netting to contain them and to protect them from birds of prey if that is a concern where you are. p.s. ducks are fine in a low-fenced area, and they love a pond to swim in, also provide eggs, but they also need to be protected from overhead predators (we had a Bald Eagle kill and consume one of ours!).
