I live in Baguio, and my first christmas here and the traffic has been brutal. We dont have a car and rely on a taxi or you can take the jeepney. One day this past week, we tried to leave Pure Gold grocery, and it took us an hour to get a taxi back home. We had to beg the driver and offered extra cash to take us because he was going on a lunch break, lol. I even tried getting a Grab taxi, and none were available! So if you visit here be prepared if it's a holiday!

Rob, Military people do not get free healthcare at the VA in Manila, only vets with service connected disabilities and they only treat you for that disability. They should get some type of health insurance.

I like the up and coming Nuvali area by Ayala which is in Santa Rosa/Calamba Laguna. Close enough to Tagaytay but not too close. Close enough to Alabang. Have a couple of decent hospitals in Qualimed and Medical city. No spaghetti wires, very nice Solenad mall and an SM premiere that is under construction. No flooding as it’s high enough. It’s about an 1-2 hours to the great beaches of Batangas. Couple of great golf courses, American fast food, Landers and S&R (Costco like) next to each other. Look it up.
@ -yeah, that’s the problem on the weekends. Tagaytay and Batangas beaches are the short weekend getaways for some. We recently just had that big typhoon and our area didn’t get flooded. Btw, I’m still in the US and have been going home couple time a year. But I will be there full time in a couple of years.
thank you for this nice list of places for an expat to plant their roots. I am 74, in decent shape, love walking, shopping, and strolling by the water. I originally picked Cebu to be my soft-landing city but have decided to start at Iloilo, mainly due to the infrastructure, cleanliness, less traffic, less pollution, and the esplanade area around the river. As a Texan, I'm used to the western amenities, and I believe Iloilo has a lot for me to enjoy. I would love to check out other places you mentioned, to see if that area would be a better fit for me. However, I picked Iloilo, some of which my daughter in-laws family lives in Antique and they are excited in seeing me when I get there. I'll land in Cebu and spend a week there just for some sightseeing, then off to Iloilo. I'm very concerned in the safety aspect of the infrastructure, which determines where I live, since I love to walk. I'm setting my budget at 90k pecos per month to start.

Just a quick aside..... I moved here... my goal was to not spend any money for 6 months, except for essential daily living. Look, observe, but don't act. My monthly expenses for a family of five here is 1,200 USD. All in. Your living preferences may vary, but an individual can easily live quite well on your budget. Remember, this is not your country. Their culture and ways of doing things is different. Please do not bring your country here. Filipinos do NOT spend their money foolishly. They respect those who are also frugal. They will take advantage of anyone who is not. It is a great place, but different. Have fun....have a great trip!
if you love to walk, then Baguio is the place for you since Baguio is walkable. sidewalks are very wide and clean. tons of parks and lots of treks as well plus the weather is perfect.

My daughter in-law has been educating me on things to do and not to do for some time. She's cooked me many dishes which some I really liked and some not so much. A great list for many expat retirees. The elevation of your place helps, but is probably less important than you being on the edge of a deep canyon coming off the mountains which channel the winds. The breezes make a big difference in "feeling" comfortable. Sometimes being next to the ocean also makes for nice winds, one reason why much of Hawaii feels so temperate. Elevation does matter though, when I was a student pilot the rule of thinking is that it is 3 degrees Fahrenheit cooler per 1,000 feet of higher elevation. I'm still intrigued by Bataan, La Union and Benguet (province Baguio is in). All three are farther away from good hospitals though.
I've thought about Makati, Dumaguette, Cebu near the city, Valencia more like it bcuz of the elevation, Baguio is too cold at night, 12°C is common and as low as 6°C, a record low, Storms don't bother me nor do typhoons. After all, I lived in Tampa Florida for 34 years. Florida has almost identical weather as the Philippines during summer months. Hot, humid, and storms almost every afternoon with the occasional typhoon/ hurricane. I think the lightening shows are more prevalent in Florida.
The frequency and severity of the storms is increasing though so maybe it should be part of the thinking. I've only been in one category 4 hurricane, but it was scary and I wasn't living on the beach or next to a river.
@Learning.Naturally I don't w.orry about frequency or severity. I know I can build a house that can withstand any typhoon or tornado. I would never live on the beach , every time a storm hits you have to evacuate and repair the house or completely rebuild. That's insanity.

Your 'picks' seem to be catering to the 'Robs' who are looking for a champagne lifestyle on a budget. I mean you talk of golf, gated communities, private schools, renting cars, keeping the inlaws at arms length, Makati, BGC, no trikes allowed , the need to be near a reputable hospital, etc... I personally, enjoy the smaller town beach vibe with the Philippino restaurants and market stalls and al fresco cafes all with a sea breeze. Just saying. The VA clinic will only cover injuries that are documented as injuries that occurred while in the military. So if you have a heart attack and it wasn't a pre-existing condition then they do not have to treat you. You may get care under the (FMP) foreign medical plan, but you may be required to pay the bill and file for reimbursement. also, the VA will only provide medicines to treat documented illnesses. So, if you develop diabetes the VA will not cover the medications unless it was a service-connected illness
@@FlyMeToThePhilippines not sure what you mean 'Never'. Grab always picks us up usually within 5-10 minutes. I prefer Grab car over taxi, but that is just a preference. Regular taxi are a hit n miss in many ways.
@FlyMeToThePhilippines if you want S&R, so you can feel like "at home like in the US", then probably you are in wrong place. In the Philippines, only major urban areas like Cebu, Manila, Davao or maybe CdO have that S&R and only Cebu & Manila ha Landers outlet.

There is nothing to do in Cagayan de Oro, no clean ocean or beaches to visit unless to drive an hour or two away from the bay. The VA clinic (not hospital) only treats service related items, otherwise go to the US for treatment.
hi Rob. good informative vid as usual. im going to the CDO area in November. i have a friend who lives in Tagoloan. she likes downtown CDO. she says its a vibrant city, lots to do. im not looking to replicate my comfortable suburban lifestyle i have here now in East Lansing Michigan. im looking forward to being with the common folks in the Philippines. i dont need high end amenities in a private gated community. again, i have that here. i want a new culture, a new vibe. what does CDO offer? to be honest, im tired of playing golf with retired white guys. been there, done that. i dont want to stand out in a crowd wearing high end designer clothes. im tired of that too. i want to see and experience the real Philippines. tell me some good things about CDO. i wont be chasing women nor hangin at bars and night clubs. i like coffee shops, walking around, encountering happy people who will look at me and smile. can CDO be a good place for someone like me? i am 68 years old so i would like to have a decent hospital within the 60 minutes you mentioned. does CDO have a decent hospital?
Yes, we have decent hospitals, but the infrastructure downtown is really poor. There are three or four good malls and you can find shops and restaurants. However, the sidewalks, the congestion, the pollution. The noise downtown is pretty tough and if you came to the suburbs, you wouldn’t feel like you were in the back hole. It would feel a lot like the Philippines.
I'm a Veteran which is a primary reason I'mm moving there in 1.5 years. But I don't think the VA Hospital takes you just because you're a veteran, I think you have to be disabled to use those facilities. Anybody have any clarification of that?
It depends on your choice of housing guard gated communities are more than traditional Filipino houses and markets can be more however, it’s only 10 or 15 minutes downtown where you can shop like a local

Wikipedia is giving 430 m for CDO. 500' may be above a nearby valley or something. Someone from denver told me that In the US you gotta get a mile and a half up for coolness. There was a heat wave and it was also hot in denver, which is a mile in elevation. However, they aren't near an ocean. This post is great info.
BEST (?) -- For me - as a retired old man from the US - I want "comfortable" in my life. Alone and not interested in a relationship - a nice studio - easy to clean and cheap to cool would be ideal. A 'helper' a day / week might be nice to clean shop & cook some ? Perhaps an older mature Filipina ? --- Tagaytay - area - might well be nice enough. Within a few miles of the rim is fine. -?- Not into the beach scene or the big city vibe - except to visit once in a while. Comfortable weather and international food being available is to my liking ! Not far to the Manila airport to travel is also nice. Great malls & hospitals + US Embassy with the SS office there if needed. -?- All considered (?) not too bad a place or location. > The volcano is a very small one & prevailing winds blow E - W - while Tagaytay & Manila are N. The area is scenic and beautiful with farms and fresh produce all the time. Coffee pineapple coconuts strawberries mushrooms...... a lot of fresh organic food is grown in the area !

We drive to Nuvali all the time. CALAX expressway is nice. Santa Rosa Tagaytay Road gets congested on the weekends.

Hi Paul, I think you’re exactly right. The canyon and the cooler from the mountains is definitely a major factor in the breeze.
Olongapo/Subic is a nice area. Larger city w decent Healthcare options and a couple of hours from Manilla
I’ve heard heard it’s very nice. I’ve yet to be there.

The VA clinic will only cover injuries that are documented as injuries that occurred while in the military. So if you have a heart attack and it wasn't a pre-existing condition then they do not have to treat you. You may get care under the (FMP) foreign medical plan, but you may be required to pay the bill and file for reimbursement. also, the VA will only provide medicines to treat documented illnesses. So, if you develop diabetes the VA will not cover the medications unless it was a service-connected illness

In big cities like CBU and Manila grab works pretty good here in CDO. They never come pick you up.
@@FlyMeToThePhilippines not sure what you mean 'Never'. Grab always picks us up usually within 5-10 minutes. I prefer Grab car over taxi, but that is just a preference. Regular taxi are a hit n miss in many ways.

There is nothing to do in Cagayan de Oro, no clean ocean or beaches to visit unless to drive an hour or two away from the bay. The VA clinic (not hospital) only treats service related items, otherwise go to the US for treatment.

hi Rob. good informative vid as usual. im going to the CDO area in November. i have a friend who lives in Tagoloan. she likes downtown CDO. she says its a vibrant city, lots to do. im not looking to replicate my comfortable suburban lifestyle i have here now in East Lansing Michigan. im looking forward to being with the common folks in the Philippines. i dont need high end amenities in a private gated community. again, i have that here. i want a new culture, a new vibe. what does CDO offer? to be honest, im tired of playing golf with retired white guys. been there, done that. i dont want to stand out in a crowd wearing high end designer clothes. im tired of that too. i want to see and experience the real Philippines. tell me some good things about CDO. i wont be chasing women nor hangin at bars and night clubs. i like coffee shops, walking around, encountering happy people who will look at me and smile. can CDO be a good place for someone like me? i am 68 years old so i would like to have a decent hospital within the 60 minutes you mentioned. does CDO have a decent hospital?
Yes, we have decent hospitals, but the infrastructure downtown is really poor. There are three or four good malls and you can find shops and restaurants. However, the sidewalks, the congestion, the pollution. The noise downtown is pretty tough and if you came to the suburbs, you wouldn’t feel like you were in the back hole. It would feel a lot like the Philippines.

I'm a Veteran which is a primary reason I'mm moving there in 1.5 years. But I don't think the VA Hospital takes you just because you're a veteran, I think you have to be disabled to use those facilities. Anybody have any clarification of that?

It depends on your choice of housing guard gated communities are more than traditional Filipino houses and markets can be more however, it’s only 10 or 15 minutes downtown where you can shop like a local

@@FlyMeToThePhilippines i guess elevation has higher velocity air. It seemed like a big difference from only 500' so i checked after i posted. Wikipedia is giving 430 m for CDO. 500' may be above a nearby valley or something. Someone from denver told me that In the US you gotta get a mile and a half up for coolness. There was a heat wave and it was also hot in denver, which is a mile in elevation. However, they aren't near an ocean. This post is great info.

BEST (?) -- For me - as a retired old man from the US - I want "comfortable" in my life. Alone and not interested in a relationship - a nice studio - easy to clean and cheap to cool would be ideal. A 'helper' a day / week might be nice to clean shop & cook some ? Perhaps an older mature Filipina ? --- Tagaytay - area - might well be nice enough. Within a few miles of the rim is fine. -?- Not into the beach scene or the big city vibe - except to visit once in a while. Comfortable weather and international food being available is to my liking ! Not far to the Manila airport to travel is also nice. Great malls & hospitals + US Embassy with the SS office there if needed. -?- All considered (?) not too bad a place or location. > The volcano is a very small one & prevailing winds blow E - W - while Tagaytay & Manila are N. The area is scenic and beautiful with farms and fresh produce all the time. Coffee pineapple coconuts strawberries mushrooms...... a lot of fresh organic food is grown in the area !
