For those coming to this video it's a super great comparison of 2 awesome DAWs. There was an update to logic like a month after this video to logic that fixed 2 issues boombox had.
    - sub folders are available in logic now
    - groove pools are also basically implemented in something called Groove Templates now

    • @kroh

sub folders were actually possible ever since Logic added folders, but there was just a slightly convoluted way of creating them.

There’s still so many features I learn about the DAW which keeps it fresh. I’d use the giftcard to purchase acoustic treatment for my room and maybe some extra plugins. Thank you for providing this opportunity for the community.

I have used Ableton since its 7th iteration. I used logic x for a little while. I have used Fl studio also.

  • @rabbitsblood
    @rabbitsblood ปีที่แล้ว +10

At 4:53, you have to push Fn + F9 because you have the keys set to use the Keyboard Shortcuts functions by default so holding down Fn tells the computer you actually want to use F9 instead of the fast forward shortcut. You can switch it around and have the F9 functionality by default by going to System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard > and check the box for “Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys”. Then you can still use the shortcuts by pressing Fn. Much more useful that way for actually working.

Haha that intro is so good! I love Ableton so much and I’ve used logic at times too. But to me Ableton is the most flexible and user friendly DAW there is. Saving your vocal chains/FX Chains etc, having the search bar and just the overall workflow is super smooth. Makes it easy to keep creating rather than being stuck in menus constantly.

    • @BadBoy-cp9lp

If I got the $500 sponsorship for my studio, I would probably buy a pair of studio monitors in order to mix my songs better than on my heaphones and to have a clearer mix in my room. The second thing that I would buy is: an Audio Interface, because now, I just plug my headphones output and microphone and guitar inputs into my PC, however my PC is not the best in playing and recording audio straight into my daw. The third thing what I'd buy is a Digital Audio Workstation, but I don't know if it still counts as studio gear... But anyways, I really really enjoyed todays podcast and everything went really smooth and the jokes were absolutely hilarious! Keep it up guys! I just got a Macbook pro with the M1. My main goal is to record, mix, and EQ my own vocals. I’m into stacking harmonies, so I end up with tons of tracks (often 80+) Would I have a better experience working with Logic Pro or Ableton? I also have a Roland Juno that I’d like to play around with from a midi perspective. What do you all suggest?

    • @NoizeLondon

I produce in Logic and love it, but Ableton seems better for certain genres of music and can do some awesome stuff. While logic's midi engine and time warping seems more powerful, both DAWs are great, but pro tools dwarfs them both for professional recording! I would use $500 to help me afford an SSL Big 6ix so I can start using outboard gear in my home setup! Thanks so much for doing this :)

    • @NoizeLondon

You’re smoking crack. Pro Tools sucks. Almost every DAW our now is better than Pro Tools. Only reason some studios even use it still is because they’ve invested so much time, money and energy into it. Pro Tools won’t even be around much longer if they don’t adapt. They literally suck compared to modern DAWs.

Nice review! I’d LOVE to find a comparison video that factors in which features can be approximated with third party solutions and which are irreplaceable. For example, maybe you could use NI’s transient shaper in place of ableton’s transient warp mode, but the quality of life feature of having it available for every audio clip (and easily automated) gives ableton an edge. Or maybe ableton users can grab melodyne instead of Logic’s flex pitch, although if ARA 2 isn’t supported the editing process is a lot more tedious.

I use Ableton live! I've tried Logic and FL studio, but i personally find easier the workflow on Ableton. I think it permits you to do stuff really quickly and its stock plug-ins are really high quality! But in my opinion the Daw use is really subjective, someone can find easier logic, other ones Fl, others prefer Cubase..
If I'd have the chance to win those 500€ I'll definitely use them to upgrade my sound system, good pair of monitors+ headphones! The quality of sound you produce is massively impacted by how you hear in my opinion!

In Ableton, you can set any key to the rec button (as well as many others). Just press cmd+K and Ableton will highlight every button that can be assigned a new key. Just click on the button and then push the key you want and then press esc - you're done. The only issue is that they are not saved globally and are tied to a set. So I recommend you create a new set, set the keys, and then make it your default set. Or if you already have a custom default one just upgrade it with new mappings and save it as default again.

for Hip Hop producers FL Studio is an atomic bomb that can takes any demo into a banger and makes the difference when hitting any listener's ear. for Djs and EDM producers Ableton Live is a game changer that makes you feel like you're driving a Bugatti or Ferrari while you're producing an Ibiza summer hit. for film composers nothing can come closer to the power of Steinberg Cubase who wrote the history on its MIDI capability. for POP producers and mixing Engineers Pro Tools it's a holy thing and It is forbidden for you to questioning it's abilities even if a very few of them sold pro tools and now they swear by Reaper or S1. for Apple's fan base you can't compare their Music Production flagship Logic that many famous Pop Producers & Songwriters or even some big EDM names who hit the top billboard charts many times still believe that Logic played the major roll in their career and it is the best when it comes to songwriting due to its high quality stock sounds and Drummer feature that makes any songwriter happy with it. at the end this DAWs war never end. major DAWs are well known nowadays. so my advice is... pick one and try it for a couple of weeks or months if you don't like it try another one until you find what you're comfortable with then you have to stick with it. because changing your DAW can hold you back and therefore can affect your musical career, your DAW is the most important component that everything else can build around, and over the years you can complete it with second DAW to make certain things that seems to be easy and has much better results.

I use to make my own quantise template for logic. but it was MANY years ago and I have forgotten how.
but im sure if you searched there will be a way.
The simpler.. I think back to the old bows who taught you to produce with your ears and not with graphs. so I don't see that as a win personally.
the ESM has been around since Logic was owned by emagic.. I was using it in Logic 4.. I still have it xD
Great vid! I thought the future comparison was very interesting!
Peronally I have ableton, how it look is the first thing. but then the learning curve needed to just get basics down I don't think enhance the workflow at all after you know what you are doing.
Logic is by far much nicer to look at and as I have been using it since V2 I have very comfortable. so I cant say its better.
I have uninstalled ableton more times than I can count xD as after a hour of just wanting to get a idea down I find my self asking the question "why are they doing this like this?"

Thanks for giving us the chance to win a 500$ gift card! I already have a lot of stuff I would love to spend it on:
A guitar rack, an Acoustic screen (the thing you put around microphones, don't know the English word..) and a nice Grid-Controller, maybe the Novation Launchpad Pro MK3! And if there's still some money left I would have a look around for some good Guitar pedals and amps :)

I would definietly buy Boombox premium, one of the best helpers for producing, especially, when I want to produce for an artist pretty far away (happens regularly), or I want to be ready for our recording session with my ideas. Because Im a student, I haven't got much money, (neither my parents) but I'm in the "producing world" for 5 years, and I always wanted to have better equipments, but I could only afford 1 update in a year. I'm growing slow, but steady. With this I could finally have a studio mic (for my recordings I've been using my friend's), an Audio Technica AT2020. I would like to have a microphone stand, a pair of studio speakers, and better sound proofing equipment. It would be the biggest grow in my carrier, and the biggest step towards my dream to become a producer, songwriter🥰😍
And also my favourite DAW is Logic, but sadly yet it is just a dream, but whenever I watch videos about producing, its just simply satisfying to see how usable this DAW is, how clean, and especially for the vocal comping, recording, it has the best features. Its simply magical ✨

I've come to the conclusion that you can't go wrong with either and you can all the same stuff in both. However, I'd choose logic if recording audio and mixing is the priority and I'd choose ableton if producing electronic music and writing tracks from scratch was the priority. and if all of those are a priority go with the one that looks better to you.

In my opinion, Logic Pro is better. Ableton is great for finishing tracks quickly and easily (and of course is the only DAW that is fantastic for live performance), but it lacks the depth of options and intuition of Logic. I know plenty of folks will say otherwise, but having trained in both, Logic is the DAW I now always open and use, so for me Logic retains the crown of best DAW (for now!)
I’d spend the cash on (ironically given the above) on the Ableton push 2 to be able to perform the album I am about to release live!

I totally agree. I started out with garage band and logic then switched to ableton and finished faster tracks but not too good ones. At some point I got abit annoyed by ableton as it felt like a live performance and I went back to logic. Enjoy it so much.
