Marion learned Spanish in high school. She talked about this in an interview with Spain's El Pais in December 2016:

EP: You have been in our country many times.
Marion: Yes, and I learned Spanish in high school. But the truth is that I can't speak it. And I'm really sorry, because it's one of my favorite languages.
EP: A little bit?
Marion: Un poquito, pero poquito, poquito. (She says it in Spanish, laughing) "A little bit, but little, very little".
EP: But with a very good accent.
Marion: Oh, yeah? Gracias (Thank you).
EP: See? You said "gracias" pronouncing the C in a neutral tone.
Marion: I would love to speak it, it is one of the most beautiful languages. The best way would be to make a film in Spanish, and I would have no choice but to work on it. If not, I will not have time ever.
EP: Do you like Almodóvar?
Marion: I love him. I worked with Penelope [Cruz] (in 'Nine', the musical) and tried to speak Spanish with her, but she looked at me like saying: "Oh, my God, I think it's best if we continue in English." ('Laugh'). Because it took about five minutes to say each sentence. So I can't speak it anymore, but at school it was very good, really, until I went to high school, and since I hated my teacher, it became a nightmare. I was not that good any more.

M: Me encantaría hablarlo, es uno de los idiomas más bonitos. La mejor forma sería hacer una película en español, y así no me quedaría otro remedio que trabajar en ello. Si no, no voy a tener tiempo nunca.
EP: ¿Le gusta Almodóvar?
M: Me encanta. Trabajé con Penélope [Cruz] (en 'Nine', el musical) e intenté hablar español con ella, pero me miraba como diciendo: "Oh, Dios mío. Creo que es mejor que sigamos en inglés". ('Ríe'). Porque tardaba unos cinco minutos en decir cada frase. Así que ya no puedo hablarlo, pero en el colegio era muy buena, de verdad, hasta que fui a la escuela secundaria, y como odiaba a mi profesora, se convirtió en una pesadilla. Ya no fui tan buena.
