good spot. omg when someone broaches your second language and your ability it DOES feel like the seat just became scalding hot. it's a different thing altogether!! totally different part of the brain...
Hey - I completely understood your accent, don't listen to people insulting it. I am also sure that the actors appreciate not being asked the same questions over and over again.
From my experience of learning German it can be quite intimidating speaking it to a native German because of accents and like Michael said, the fact there are a lot more words in the German vocabulary than in English. Speaking it on a very basic level is pretty easy but to actually speak it like a native is really hard.
His German is impeccable. Test is always the ‘ch’ pronunciation. Perhaps a few small grammatical errors but for someone who left Germany when he was two yrs old, but great command of lingo
„Ican understand it much better than I speak“. That sounds familiar, its the same with me (the other way round) 😁 to hear a guy like him talk my tongue, makes him so much more real and normal (plain in a cute way) to me ! He is not able to use or even alienate his voice to act/manipulate the audience .
Though I came here in hopes of seeing Michael talk about Erik in Dark Phoenix, this was a nice personal interview. I’d much rather watch real conversations like this as opposed to when interviewers force the actors and filmmakers to play awkward games and watch random videos on the spot.
Though I'm not German, we received the particular 'recept' for the dish he mentioned years ago on holiday there: it's indeed called Krautkrapfen. Really tasty!
Absolut.
I think my German is on a similar level to his, I always make grammar mistakes. I have had Germans tell me the exact same thing the interviewer said to Fassbender, about people living in Germany for years who speak a lot worse than i do lol. XD it gives me some comfort at least.
I swear my level is identical to his, down to the clear nervousness being put on the spot (of course, I've never produced mine on camera). I even have that "ich muss es mehr uben" sentence saved in my brain to say up front in order to excuse my discomfort.
Same with me. English is my native tongue but I also learnt French from my French mother. Spoke it a lot when I lived with her, but these days my French is a bit rusty. I can still understand it perfectly, but speaking it requires more brainpower than usual.
Michael Fassbender is so cute speaking German. But the interviewer? 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ I am German and the way this guy speaks English is such an embarrasment... My English teacher would've KILLED me speaking like this.... No wonder Americans always expect us all to sound like that....
Zum Beispiel aus dem englischen Satz: "There are thirty-three thoroughly valid themes" wird: "Dere are tirty-tree touroughly valid temes". So einfach ist das. 😀😀😀 MsG
He said "I try to improve speaking in German more, my understanding is good but talking is somewhat hard for me. He said his favourite word is pencil (in German) what I like about the German language is.... Then goes into English
I hate the way, how the interviewer corrects him, as Mike Fassbender said in German: "Es ist sehr exakt"(engl:It is very exactly),"How do you say it in German?" and the interviewer answered him:"Präzise"(precise), instead of saying no you did a good job, you translated it right. Even exactly in english means exakt in german, but precise means präzise. Maybe the interviewer is a nice person, but i don't like unnessecary correction of people, which have no sense, instead of pushing your ego.
I wish there would be one interview with a celebrity who got any relationship to germany and is not being asked about his german speaking abilities by the germn interviewer. Always annoys me.
Ugh sorry but... If you're gonna do an interview in English please work harder on your language skills... I appreciate Fassbender talking in German, but the overall feeling for this was just... cringe. Please try harder next time.

Undoubtedly a strong accent from Piz Palu
Did you see that movie, the one with his brother in? His brother was much better looking than he was.

His German has a strong Irish accent
Because he's both
His mother is Irish. Father is German. Born in Germany hence his German surname. Moved to Ireland at age 2.

I am glad the interview was personal rather than the usual stock questions and answers about a crap movie.
