Lyle Mays is one of the greatest musicians alive today. I sorely miss him from the original Pat Metheny Group, whom chose to disband without any warning or farewell concert. Nevertheless, I have followed Lyle's career (as well as Pat's) since I 'discovered' them on a morning of April, 1983. On that day my life was changed forever. I am grateful to Lyle in so many levels that it is difficult to put into words. I appreciate the opportunity to write these lines and I am grateful to all those that take the time to post these jewels for the rest to enjoy.
People are simple beings. Simple people don't always appreciate the value of poetic descriptions of the feelings that arise from music such as this. Oh how I wish everyone could experience, hear and feel what we feel when interpreting rich music.
Lyle, you're my favorite keyboard artist.. always taking the melody line in beautifully unexpected direction.. I am continually amazed.. Thank you, SomethingReal1119 .. yet another beautiful sonic gem to lift me out of the wintertime blues! ;)
thank you so much (SomethingReal) for posting this! I've been a fan of Lyle Mays from the early 70's, but until very recently I hadn't been aware of his brilliance as a solo pianist. what beautiful touch and harmonic sensibility.
To think I haven't heard this before today! It's now in a few of my fave playlists. Thank you Lyle for the Evans touch and your wonderful spirit, and thank you, Something Real, for posting this beautiful piece.
Wow! It’s like the spirit of Bill Evans entered Lyle's body and the resulting music embodies the best of these two amazing artists! Also, one of my favorite Lyle Mays/Pat Metheny pieces is September Fifteenth. Until seeing this video I didn’t know that was the day Bill Evans passed away.
Bill Evans would probably disagree with the assertion that his musical influence on subsequent generations would be profound. Still, I believe it's been argued that he may in fact be the most influential jazz musician since WWII. Considering his contributions at the level of harmony (specifically upper-extension color tones), lyricism (no small feat in a post bop environment), and a rhythm section concept that is less functional time-keeping and more egalitarian, spontaneous composition/orchestration; one would be hard pressed to find a better steward of the jazz tradition as it was evolving through the turbulent latter half of the 20th century. ALL musicians owe Bill Evans a debt of gratitude and no musician is more equipped than Lyle to lead that charge.
WOW... I've never heard it better expressed nor stated about BE, and I could not agree more.!!! Sorry it took three years for me to see this post. JM. Thanks Chip
btw, the tony bennett and bill evans album is incredible; just tony b and bil e giving their best. you can hear the smile in tony's voice while being accompanied by bill.
MERCI !
And there you are again sr1119, the muse, perhaps. How do you see yourself in the dream? Every time I reach for it I am eluded by a phantom dance. Blue clouds swirl in silver laughter that sparkle off the edge sublime. Drips ripple through the depth of space and silhouette memoirs linger in the eddies of time. I cant help but wonder if the sky is amused and if so, then I happy to oblige one step short of the dream. That poem is just for you sr1119.
Beautiful poem to much beautiful music and the person that posted it - a true tribute. My muted mind drips with tears of joy as one happy note dances with a sad but in the end embrace the love we share with the all and the all with us with music of that which we can only hear in passing - over and over i play and rewind.
I'm sorry, I thought a replied to this earlier. I guess I didn't! lol The song is called, "Bill Evans" and it's on Mays' CD, Fictionary I believe. (~_~)
Hi my pal. My posting was on the music and its impression on me, like "cream sliding down a spoon". I always ignore those nasty replies you refer to, I always say... if they aint love, then I don't wanna know. Nice to catch you again, I know your heart to well to forget you. The darkness can't last forever, let the light shine babe. Love from Paul. x.
Cream sliding down a spoon, silky and sexy as a new pair of ladies stockings, sheer! As cool and refreshing as the dew on a park bench early on a New York morning. Misty and timless, looking into the reflections of green lights in a rain pool. As easy and free as any spinning wheel, greased with class oil. Give me time now, don't want speed, just want this.
My dear old friend....I cannot believe I've never seen this comment; and that someone marked it as "spam"???? HUH?!?! Your words are always so lovely; and I've enjoyed reading this wee tidbit from your creative brain. Hope you are doing well.... (~_~) Btw, I've stopped writing my own personal"impressions" such as this on other ppl's vids...I get too many nasty replies. Aaah, such is life. lol
I am so saddened by the death of Lyle Mays ... we have lost a truly great artist and supremely influential jazz musician. RIP Lyle
There has been a hole in my heart since Bill Evans passed, but, close your eyes and he seems to be with us yet!!! Thank you, Lyle Mays.
What A Mesmerizing Composition, The Ebb and Flow Of It's Movements Pulls Your Emotions In and Out Like The Tides,Gorgeous!!!

Lyle Mays was a genius and he has left us his legacy and beautiful gifts which will be treasured forever throughout history. RIP
Lyle really captures the essence of Bill with this composition. Superb!
Lyle, you have joined Bill in music heaven, we will miss you on earth😥
This is simply beautiful
This has brought tears to my eyes. Both of these musicians are equally important parts of my life.
People are simple beings. Simple people don't always appreciate the value of poetic descriptions of the feelings that arise from music such as this. Oh how I wish everyone could experience, hear and feel what we feel when interpreting rich music.
Can you imagine their duets in heaven? Would love to see the rehearsals.
It is time Lyle Mays was recognised as the marvellous musician that he is -recognition of this is long overdue.
... and lyle's tribute to bill evans, september 15th, (as falls wichita, so falls wichita falls album) is another joy.

I love Lyle Mays- especially when he played with Pat Metheny!

Breathtakingly beautiful. Thanks for posting. What album is this on, please?
Album: Lyle Mays - Fictionary (1993) Jack DeJohnette: Drums; Marc Johnson: Acoustic bass; Lyle Mays: Piano
This melody is like a Leaf in the Wind ; floating then dropping , turning in and out , almost touching the ground , but not .
Where is this place, so ethereal and dreamy ?
Lyle Mays is so good that he can duplicate Bill Evans with two fingers while he plays arpeggios with his remaining appendages.
@iwanmpb I know, I just love this tune... Thanks for listening. ^_^
Im going out and buying a brand new piano... and some new locks for my door. : )
So cute - I love it.
Metheny was not, of course, alone... Lyle is an extraordinary musician !!!
I'd walk many a mile just to shake Mays' hand........................
